Assurance

G'Day, I was wondering exactly how "Assurance" works?

It's Dark, physical, 50 base power - goes to 100 base power when the opponent is already hurt that turn..

Does this mean with Tyranitars Sand Stream, it'll have a base power of 100 each time?

With his STAB that'd be base power of 150 every time - assuming I've got how it works down properly.

Just wondering if this is how it works, anyone know?

TTar could be a bit stronger if that's what happens (it'd outdo Crunch..)

Sandstorm does damage at the end of the turn, so it won't help you when using Assurance, which requires the opponent to be hurt before you use the move.

How do I hurt them "before" my attack then?

So it's like a 2v2 move?

Either way it definitely has some potential, in my opinion, unfortunately Dark isn't the greatest of types to attack with, but perhaps have someone with a Lagging Tail/Macho Brace paired with a Quick Attack-type move user, or simply have someone out with a faster Pokemon in order to set up the Assurance hit?

Yeah, 2vs2 with a partner who is faster than your Assurance user is probably the easiest way to put it to use. It might work in single if the opponent is faster and uses a move that gives it recoil damage though (Has this been tested?).

Well since like every pokemon seems to be holding Life Orb it could be a fair enough move to use in single battles anyway.. Just scout first with a tankish pokemon, and switch in or something.

I initially thought Assurance was only really valid in Double Battles, but have recently discovered that it can be useful in Single Battles, too. I've done testing and have confirmed that if the opponent takes damage from confusion before Assurance lands, Assurance will do double damage.

I'm assuming that if the opponent switches and the new Pokemon takes Spikes or Stealth Rock damage coming in, that counts too. For instance, I'm training a Mightyena with this set:

Mightyena @ BlackGlasses, Intimidate

Sucker Punch
Assurance
Swagger
Taunt

With good prediction, Spikes support, and a little luck, this thing can be a pain. If you use Taunt, their only choices are to attack you (Sucker Punch) or switch (Assurance). Also bear in mind that a confused opponent that chooses a damaging attack can be Sucker Punched whether or not they're actually going to get the attack off. It requires good team support for anything that resists Dark moves, though. It's more fun than functional.

Yeah I was thinking of something similar with umbreon use:
Umbreon @ leftovers
Swagger
Assurance
Psych up
Baton Pass/Toxic
With some luck this could work well.
