[OVERVIEW]
Ash-Greninja remains a prominent offensive Pokemon in the metagame thanks to its great Special Attack, fantastic STAB combination, and high Speed that allows it to outrun even Tapu Koko and Weavile once transformed. Water Shuriken allows it to pick off weakened setup sweepers such as Volcarona and Shift Gear Magearna and faster Pokemon such as Choice Scarf Landorus-T, Choice Scarf Kartana, and Mega Alakazam. Spikes allows it to punish and wear down its checks over time, allowing Ash-Greninja to have an easier time grabbing KOs. However, despite its upsides and ability to match up well against offense, Ash-Greninja struggles against bulkier cores utilizing Pokemon such as Chansey and Toxapex, often just being used to set up Spikes for its teammates. Its fragility also leaves it prone to priority moves such as Mega Medicham and Mega Lopunny's Fake Out, as well as preventing it from pivoting in consistently throughout a battle.

Other Options
=============
Ash-Greninja does not have many other viable options, as Spikes is far superior to other last move options. However, if Spikes is already present on the team, Ash-Greninja can opt to run Ice Beam to more immediately threaten Tapu Bulu, Dragonite, and Kommo-o. U-turn allows Ash-Greninja to maintain momentum for its team and pairs well with other wallbreakers such as Mega Medicham and Tapu Lele, which are able to take advantage of common switch-ins to Ash-Greninja like Chansey and Toxapex. Both Hydro Pump and Surf can be used together on rain teams.
Checks and Counters
===================
**Special Walls**: Chansey doesn't care for any of Greninja's attacks thanks to its amazing bulk; however, it can be pressured with Spikes and double switches to chip away due at it to its lack of passive recovery. Assault Vest Magearna's bulk allows it to take on Greninja, and it can force Greninja out and gain momentum through Volt Switch. However, it lacks reliable recovery and is vulnerable to Spikes, meaning that it can be overwhelmed over time by repeated Choice Specs Hydro Pump hits.
**Grass-types**: Ferrothorn resists Hydro Pump and isn't 2HKOed by Dark Pulse, meaning that it can make progress with Leech Seed or set up entry hazards. Tapu Bulu resists both of Greninja's STAB attacks and can force it out with Wood Hammer or Horn Leach. However, both Ferrothorn and Tapu Bulu can get worn down by hazards, which allows Greninja to break through them later. Tapu Bulu can also be surprised by coverage moves such as Ice Beam and Gunk Shot. Mega Venusaur can withstand Greninja's moves without fearing Ice Beam thanks to Thick Fat and can force it out with the threat of Giga Drain or force progress against Greninja's team with Knock Off. Though it's worth noting that Mega Venusaur's Synthesis doesn't fare well against the rain that Greninja may be paired with.
**Water-types**: Toxapex's bulk allows it to take on Greninja's STAB attacks and force progress by setting up Toxic Spikes; however, it doesn't resist Dark Pulse and lacks an immediate way to threaten Greninja, meaning that Greninja can fish for Dark Pulse flinches. Tapu Fini is a fantastic answer to Ash-Greninja due to resisting both of its STAB attacks, threatening it out with Moonblast and being able to immediately use Defog to remove any Spikes layers Greninja tries to set up. However, it lacks reliable recovery, so it can be worn down, especially if it has to rely on teammates to remove entry hazards. Seismitoad and Gastrodon don't resist Dark Pulse, but they're immune to Hydro Pump thanks to Water Absorb and Storm Drain, respectively, and can pressure Greninja with an Earthquake or Toxic. Keldeo and Mega Gyarados both resist Greninja's STAB attacks, and Keldeo can threaten it out with Secret Sword, while Mega Gyarados can set up on it with Dragon Dance. However, all of these Pokemon are grounded and take hazard damage. While uncommon, Mantine's typing and bulk allow it to safely switch into Greninja, and it is immune to Hydro Pump thanks to Water Absorb, is unaffected by Spikes, and can remove Greninja's Spikes with Defog.
**Dragon-types**: Kommo-o can take on Greninja thanks to its typing and force it out with its Fighting-type STAB attacks, giving itself an opportunity to set entry hazards or set up with Dragon Dance or Clangorous Soulblaze. Hydreigon's resists and can take Greninja's STAB attacks, can heal off any damage with Roost, and is immune to Greninja's Spikes. Bulky variants of both Kyurem and Kyurem-B can soft-check Greninja with their bulk; Kyurem-B can immediately threaten it out with Fusion Bolt, while Kyurem can set up Substitute; however, they are very hazard-weak and can be flinched down with Dark Pulse. While niche, Mega Altaria's typing grants it resistances to both of Greninja's STAB attacks, and it can threaten Greninja out with Pixilate Hyper Voice.
**Faster Pokemon**: Faster Pokemon such as Mega Lopunny, Mega Alakazam, and Choice Scarf users such as Kartana and Tapu Lele can all outspeed Greninja even after it transforms and OHKO it due to its frailty. Choice Scarf Tapu Lele is notable in that it's the only faster Pokemon in the tier that can safely revenge kill Greninja without fearing Water Shuriken's due to Psychic Terrain. However, apart from Choice Scarf Tapu Lele, all of these Pokemon are prone to getting revenge killed by Water Shuriken if they're in range.
