If you're confused as to why this is starting out already in GP, I'm here to quell your fears! There are a fair number of analyses on-site that are dedicated to threats that have fallen from grace, and are no longer considered viable. Many of them oversell the Pokemon in question, and exaggerate its usefulness. So, some of the Doubles QC Team has undertaken a small project to revamp the analyses of unviable Pokemon through PMs, as they do not merit a full analysis complete with three QC checks. This is the first of several such analyses, thank you in advance to the GP team for helping us with the project :]

[OVERVIEW]

Aromatisse struggles to make a niche for itself as a Trick Room setter. While it has a unique pure Fairy typing for a setter, it also only has better-than-average bulk, which still leaves it pummeled by strong attackers such as Mega Kangaskhan and Mega Charizard Y. Unlike some of the frailer Trick Room setters, Aromatisse also lacks offensive presence, making it mostly dead weight after getting Trick Room up and often leaving it as setup fodder for the likes of Mega Kangaskhan and Heatran. Aroma Veil is its sole saving grace, as it prevents it from getting stopped by Taunt, but even that is outweighed by Aromatisse's downfalls and the fact that playing around Taunt with bulkier or less momentum-draining setters is more beneficial in the long run. One should tread carefully with Aromatisse, as although its strong matchup against Dark-types and access to Heal Pulse set it apart from other Trick Room setters, generally speaking a more reliable or offensive option is a better pick.

Moves
========

Trick Room is Aromatisse's main niche in Doubles, as its ability allows it to reliably set it up without worrying about Taunt, providing a strong speed control option for its teammates. Moonblast is Aromatisse's most reliable STAB move and is preferred over Dazzling Gleam due to how weak Dazzling Gleam is coming from Aromatisse. Heal Pulse is useful for supporting teammates that lack reliable recovery options. Protect scouts for Fake Out, punishes double targeting, and also adds to Aromatisse's longevity.

Set Details
========

Aroma Veil is the preferred ability, as it allows Aromatisse and its teammates to ignore one of the most common anti-Trick Room tactics, Taunt. Safety Goggles is Aromatisse's primary item choice, as it lets Aromatisse set up Trick Room in front of common sleep users such as Amoonguss, another common method of preventing Trick Room. Sitrus Berry can be helpful, however, to keep Aromatisse in the match for longer, though it does leave it more vulnerable to Pokemon such as Amoonguss and Venusaur. The EV spread with a Relaxed nature allows Aromatisse to survive Life Orb Bisharp's Iron Head, helping ensure that Trick Room is set up. A Relaxed nature and 0 Speed IVs allow it to move before Pokemon such as Amoonguss when Trick Room is in effect. The remaining EVs are placed in Special Defense to improve Aromatisse's general bulk.

Usage Tips
========

It's typically best to set Trick Room as soon as possible, so Aromatisse acts quite well as a lead. Aroma Veil helps to ensure that Trick Room will be set, blocking some of the more common ways to prevent Trick Room. Aromatisse does not have to lead, however, and can set up Trick Room later in the game if need be. If a possible Fake Out user is on the opponent's side of the field, Aromatisse should use Protect in order to avoid taking unnecessary damage, as the move is commonly used to prevent the usage of Trick Room. If Sitrus Berry is used as the item, make sure to be wary of possible sleep inducers. Aromatisse is a Pokemon that should be played very actively, switching in and out to reset Trick Room and heal its partner. Moonblast should only be used if Aromatisse is facing an especially frail foe or one weak to Fairy-types, as otherwise it will fail to do significant damage.

Team Options
========

Slow Pokemon such as Heatran, Conkeldurr, and Mega Abomasnow make for good partners, as they can use Trick Room to its fullest extent due to their low base Speed and high attacking stats. Using their super effective STAB moves, Heatran and Conkeldurr can also defeat the Steel-types that threaten Aromatisse, making them even better options. Psychic-type Trick Room setters such as Cresselia, Reuniclus, and Hoopa-U are also good partners for this set, as they can set up Trick Room after Aromatisse has fainted and serve as decently strong attackers that beat the Poison-types that Aromatisse fears. In exchange, Aromatisse is able to handle Dark-types and support them with Aroma Veil and Heal Pulse. Fake Out support from the likes of Mega Kangaskhan and Scrafty is helpful, as it can neuter a Pokemon that could otherwise KO Aromatisse, facilitating Aromatisse's task of setting Trick Room. Rage Powder and Follow Me support from Amoonguss or Jirachi falls in a similar boat, as the moves draw attacks away from Aromatisse, allowing it to set up Trick Room with greater ease. Amoonguss also takes advantage of Trick Room due to its low Speed and perfectly accurate Spore, which can threaten nearly anything it faces. Lastly, Steel-type Pokemon such as Heatran and Ferrothorn synergize well with Aromatisse, as they can easily absorb the Steel- and Poison-type attacks that trouble it, while it can take the Fighting-type attacks they hate.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Dazzling Gleam is an option to hit both foes, though it's laughably weak, being a spread move and coming off of Aromatisse's low Special Attack. Wish in combination with Protect can be used for healing, though it takes up a support moveslot, forces Aromatisse to use Protect after it uses Wish, and isn't the most reliable move in general. Another form of healing can be found in ChestoRest, though it only works once and forces Aromatisse to give up Safety Goggles or Sitrus Berry. Light Screen and Reflect are possibilities for Aromatisse that need to support frailer teammates. Aromatherapy is another option that heals status. Rain Dance or Sunny Day can be used for weather teams, though Cresselia usually performs this role better due to its higher bulk and Speed. Calm Mind can be used for boosting, though Sylveon almost always performs this role better. An offensive Life Orb or Choice Specs set can be used to catch the opponent off guard, but once again, Sylveon is usually the better option for this role.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Steel-type Pokemon**: Heatran can set up a Substitute on Aromatisse with ease, while both Bisharp and Mega Metagross can heavily damage it with Iron Head and Meteor Mash. Jirachi can reverse Trick Room, use Follow Me to redirect Moonblast, and hit Aromatisse with a STAB Iron Head.

**Mega Gengar**: Mega Gengar traps Aromatisse and can KO it with Sludge Bomb, preventing it from setting Trick Room again later in a match.

**Trick Room**: Opposing Trick Room users such as Cresselia can reverse Trick Room in a single turn as needed.

**Priority Attacks**: Priority moves from Pokemon like Mega Kangaskhan and Talonflame are able to ignore Trick Room and threaten Aromatisse and its partner.

Implemented, thanks to you both!

One question: In Set Details, there's a sentence talking about Amoonguss and Venusaur potentially threatening with their sleep-inducing moves if you don't run Safety Goggles. In this case, Aromatisse is scared off by both Venusaur *and* Mega Venusaur, so should I just leave it as Venusaur or somehow specify that either forme is something to fear?

you can specify both, but you should be fine too if you just leave Venusaur (denoting the species in that case)
