I feel like in some circles I'm in these words were kind of reclaimed, like people will describe themselves as weebs or otaku with a smile on their face. But like it's still kind of true that if someone calls you a weeb mockingly or insensitively people will take offense. Kind of how "nerd" evolved over the years.

I say weeb because all the gross shameless weebs around here say it. But in at least one other place people have taken offence.

I think that because liking anime has become more acceptable, that the term is either not offensive anymore, or is used to describe the worst of the worst. I usually use terms like “degenerate” or “neckbeard” to describe the really bad people, the ones that actually believe they could have a relationship with a fictional character, or are generally toxic.

afaik degenerate was used by weebs themselves as a joke
