Bulky Set Up Annihilape @ Leftovers / Safety Goggles
Ability: Defiant
Level: 50
Tera Type: Water / Fire
EVs: 180 HP / 36 Atk / 108 Def / 172 SpD / 12 Spe
Nature: Adamant
[SET COMMENTS]
- This Annihilape set is designed to live the majority of hits and retaliate with massive damage with boosted Rage Fist.
- Rage Fist can be boosted up to a maximum of 350 base power, making it among the strongest physical attacks in the format. Drain Punch hits the Normal types Rage Fist cannot, and helps Annihilape stay in the game. Bulk Up can punish your opponent for playing too passively.
- Safety Goggles is a strong choice if the rest of your team lacks counterplay to Pokemon such as Amoonguss, Vivillon, and Lilligant, for instance Taunt or Misty Terrain to stop Spores and Sleep Powders. Leftovers is good to increase longevity, as we can utilize Protects to bait out our opponent’s options while recovering health.
- Water Tera type resists damage from meta threats such as Wave Crash from Dondozo or Basculegion, Hyper Voice from Primarina, and Blizzard from Choice Specs Alolan Ninetales. This Tera type introduces a weakness to Grass attacks from the likes of Rillaboom, however Grassy Glide is not a particularly strong attack, so we can expect to survive it. Thankfully electric type attacks are not particularly prevalent in this metagame, although Kilowattrel is a speedy electric attacker to watch out for, and Archaludon’s Electro Shot can do a lot of damage. The Fire Tera type set benefits from the ability to block burns which Pokemon like Talonflame use as their main source of reducing Annihilape’s damage output. It should be noted that Talonflame is often paired with Garchomp, which wants to take advantage of our new weakness to Ground attacks.
- The EV spread is purposefully built to be slow in order to take advantage of the opponent hitting Annihilape and returning with a boosted Rage Fist. The attack investment allows for a 68.8% chance to OHKO Rillaboom with 252 EVs in HP and 4 in defense with Rage Fist after four hits,, keep in mind a Bulk Up or an extra attack onto the Annihilape will be a guaranteed OHKO. The bulk allows for Annihilape to survive 252+ Life Orb Tera Normal Blood Moon from Blood Moon Ursaluna with Friend Guard active. Choice Band 252+ Wave Crash from Basculegion in the rain will OHKO Annihilape 18.8% of the time with Friend Guard, so Tera Water may be used to survive comfortably. The Annihilape survives 252+ Choice Band Dragapult Outrage as well with Friend Guard. Hitting 112 speed allows Annihilape to outrun max speed Dragapult and Choice Scarf Tatsugiri when tailwind is active.
- This set is naturally more flexible than a Choice Scarf set, and consistent in terms of accuracy and type coverage. One risk the set brings is relatively low base power attacks if the opponent prevents Rage Fist from gaining power.
Fast Scarf Support Annihilape @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Defiant
Level: 50
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Spe
Nature: Jolly
[SET COMMENTS]
- Choice Scarf Annihilape can function as an offensive Pokemon that can force a KO trade with Final Gambit, or deal steady damage with Close Combat or a Ghost attack of choice. It can also function as a supportive Pokemon that can use Coaching to buff its allies before they attack.
- Final Gambit will OHKO the majority of Pokemon in the meta given Annihilape's HP is full. Close Combat is a strong attack to be used without letting your Annihilape get immediately knocked out in the process. Rage Fist can be used to punish your opponent for attacking Annihilape without getting the knockout, and Shadow Claw grants steady damage with a slightly higher damage floor of 70 Base Power. Including either Ghost attack prevents Annihilape from getting walled by opposing Ghost types. Coaching works best when used on fast Pokemon that benefit from a defense boost as well. U-turn can be used to bait out the opponent's Terastallization instead of immediately going for Final Gambit, is a good option for breaking an opponent's Focus Sash, and serves to retreat Annihilape safely.
- Grass Tera type allows Annihilape to ignore opposing powder moves, most notably Spore, Sleep Powder, and Rage Powder. The resistance to Rillaboom comes in handy as well, As Rillaboom often tries to Grassy Glide to lower Annihilape's HP before it gets a full HP Final Gambit off. The downside of this Tera type is that it maintains the weakness to Flying type attacks.
- Maximum HP maximizes Annihilape's ability to OHKO opponents with Final Gambit, while also giving it generally solid bulk. Maximum Speed is faster than the entire metagame using Choice Scarf, if the opposing Pokemon's speed is not boosted. Opposing Choice Scarf Pokemon under base 90 speed will be slower, as well as Choice Scarf Modest Typhlosion. Although Choice Scarf Delphox is not common, Modest Choice Scarf Delphox will be a speed tie, and thus anything slower than base 104 speed will be slower than this Annihilape if they lack a speed boosting nature. Despite low attack investment, if Annihilape receives the +1 boost to its attack stat from an Incineroar, it can pressure an OHKO with Close Combat in return unless the Incineroar is using all of its EVs in HP and defense with a defense boosting nature, which is not common.
- Choice Scarf is an inherently risky item to use, and in the case of this set, the opponent is likely to try to get Annihilape to lock in to Final Gambit and punish with a Ghost type switch or Terastallization, or do something similar with a Ghost type attack and a Normal type wall. Locking in to Coaching runs the risk of doing no damage on its own, and getting taunted will lead to being forced to use Struggle. Close Combat's defense drops can often lead to Annihilape being knocked out in return despite heavy HP investment, but is still a decently strong attack to use. This set can also be a good answer into a boosted Dondozo, as Final Gambit ignores opposing defense boosts. Keep in mind Final Gambit will not OHKO Dondozo, but it will be left with low enough HP to faint to nearly any attack.

Teambuilding
============
- The Bulk Up Annihilape set is capable of putting out high damage, which means supportive Pokemon can be paired with it to enable it, with less worry about the support Pokemons’ lower damage output. Choice Scarf Annihilape is good at supporting its teammates, and cannot sweep teams on its own, so it needs to be paired with some offensive threats. Additionally, this Annihilape is often seen on Trick Room teams despite being fast, as it is intended to take out an opposing Pokemon leaving one on the opponent's side to stop Trick Room from going up, which is typically a difficult task with the bulky Trick Room setters in the metagame.
- A supportive Maushold set uses Beat Up to boost Annihilape’s Rage Fist, Taunt to shut down opposing Follow Me, Encores, and Disables, as well as its own Follow Me. Ghost Tera type Maushold makes both Maushold and Annihilape immune to Fake Out. Grimmsnarl can be used to set up screens, making Annihilape even more difficult to knockout. Comfey’s Triage ability makes it difficult to stop it from healing Annihilape. Sinistcha’s Hospitality helps prevent Annihilape from getting knocked out, and it has access to Rage Powder to redirect, and even Trick Room for speed control if the opponent’s team is generally fast. Whimsicott offers a plethora of support options including Tailwind for speed control, Misty Terrain for status prevention, and it can function as an additional Beat Up utilizer. The Fire Tera type Annihilape set can benefit from Sunny Day Whimsicott weakening super effective Water attacks. Additionally, Safety Goggles Annihilape paired up with the grass type Whimsicott can reasonably ignore Amoonguss while the Annihilape and Whimsicott set up. The Choice Scarf set is good at supporting Pokemon such as Dragapult, offensive Maushold, and Sneasler, which already have speed and enjoy the attack and defense boosts. Additionally, Sneasler can boost its special defense with a Psychic Seed, also giving it a speed boost from Unburden, thus this Annihilape and Sneasler pair together quite nicely. Another Pokemon that benefits from Annihilape's support is Dondozo, as a coached Dondozo can receive even more boosts via Tatsugiri's Commander, making it a powerhouse. U-turn can also fit on this Annihilape set in order to cause your opponent to struggle to cover plays; Final Gambit, Coaching into Dondozo, or U-turn out into Tatsugiri immediately for the Commander boosts. However, having Final Gambit, Coaching, and U-turn on the set only leaves room for Close Combat or a Ghost type move, if a Ghost type move is not taken, Annihilape must take care in getting walled by Ghost types.
- The Bulk Up set is weak to fast offensive threats taking out Annihilape’s support Pokemon before it can set up. Not too many Pokemon are faster than Maushold, but Sneasler, Dragapult, and Kilowattrel are examples that do. Ghost Tera type on Maushold can resist Sneasler’s STAB attacks, and it can hold a Focus Sash to be unlikely to faint quickly. Expanding Force is a strong attack that forces Annihilape's Tera and bypasses Follow Me. If Annihilape is going to be brought into Psyspam, it needs to be careful none of its teammates want to Terastallize that game. Choice Scarf Annihilape tends to rely on its Fighting type attacks, so it benefits from its teammates having Ghost and Dark coverage to hit opposing Ghosts. Unburden boosted Sneasler is among the few that can outspeed this Annihilape without Tailwind support, so your own Tailwind support can be utilized if moving before something very fast is a priority.
Strategy Comments
============
- The Beat Up Annihilape’s main role is to carefully set up to secure key knockouts, and prevent your opponent from playing too passively in fear of granting easy set up. It achieves this by receiving support from its teammates with moves like Follow Me and Beat Up, abilities like Hospitality and Friend Guard, and possibly its teammates setting up screens for it. The Choice Scarf set's main job is typically to Final Gambit trade with a key member of the opposing team, but it can effectively enable a sweeper on its own team with Coaching. It can also be strong on its own with Defiant boosts, or later in the game with Rage Fist boosts.
- The Beat Up strategy is meant to be used in the lead, when all four Pokemon are alive and thus Beat Up can hit four times. Annihilape without Beat Up support can still be lead or be brought out sooner rather than later in order to try to catch an opposing Intimidate. When using Beat Up with a supporting Pokemon that can use Protect, consider the idea that your opponent might not want to attack into Annihilape to avoid giving it a Rage Fist boost. If using a Maushold that has to use Taunt on the first turn, the Annihilape often gets the most value out of using Bulk Up the same turn as opposed to using an attack that has not yet been boosted. Choice Scarf Annihilape often sees its opponents trying to Protect one of their Pokemon in order to chip Annihilape down with the other, weakening Final Gambit. This can be countered by using moves other than Final Gambit, especially Coaching to punish the passive Protect turn, or U-turn to retreat, given U-turn does not connect with the Protect. This Annihilape is often sent out in the lead, but it can still be very solid in the back, as it might require an opposing Ghost type to be dealt with before it does what it wants to do with Final Gambit. If this Annihilape is being used on a Trick Room team, it is very likely for it to be brought in the lead or not brought at all, as its job on those teams is to aid in getting Trick Room set up from the start.
- It should be noted that the Normal and Ghost type Hisuian Zoroark completely walls this set. It is possible to ignore the Zoroark and target its partner, but Zoroark’s Illusion makes this very risky. Given that the Beat Up strategy is meant to be in the lead, it is not recommended to be brought into opposing Hisuian Zoroark. The Beat Up strategy uses Taunt as the simplest way to play against redirection; if it is known that the opponent is using redirection with a Pokemon holding the Mental Herb item, consider that it might take too long to get an opportunity to set up the Annihilape. Mental Herb Amoonguss in particular gets a chance to use Spore, which can often take too much momentum from the Annihilape. Tauros can use Mirror Herb to get a +2 attack after Intimidate triggers Annihilape’s Defiant, consider if this will make Tauros too strong for the team to handle. Ability Shield Intimidate Pokemon, typically Incineroar, can be paired with Neutralizing Gas Weezing to Intimidate Annihilape without falling victim to a Defiant boost. Although Annihilape enjoys having Fighting and Ghost type coverage, it would prefer to use its strongest move in Rage Fist, thus it is not always content facing off against Normal types. Specifically, Farigiraf not only takes only neutral damage from Drain Punch, but it can use Psychic Noise to disable Drain Punch, temporarily walling Annihilape. Multiscale Dragonite is one of few Pokemon that can handily take a boosted Rage Fist, and threatens to OHKO a Maushold through Focus Sash with Scale Shot, cutting off Annihilape’s support. Choice Scarf Annihilape can expect a Ghost type waiting in the back of the opposing team to switch in if it is trying to Final Gambit trade with a key component of the opponent, such as a Porygon2 on a semi Trick Room team. It is helpful if the Annihilape's partner on the field has Ghost or Dark coverage or is in some way ready for the incoming threat. Amoonguss is notably a Pokemon with Rage Powder support that lives Final Gambit from full health, preventing Annihilape's partner from attacking Amoonguss' partner. Keep in mind that Grass Tera type Annihilape ignores powder moves, but Tera is not always available. Maximum HP Ursaluna-Bloodmoon can live Final Gambit, but consider risking using it anyway if the Ursaluna-Bloodmoon is on a Tailwind team, as it is likely to forego some bulk in return for higher speed.
