With access to Spore, Rage Powder, and Regenerator, Amoonguss acts as a great support Pokemon on teams that take advantage of the free turns that it provides through redirection and status. Amoonguss's low Speed also makes it one of the strongest Trick Room checks in VGC 2022, as once Trick Room is set up, it can move before almost every common Pokemon and put them to sleep with Spore. Amoonguss is often paired with some of the most potent Restricted Pokemon in the metagame like Zacian-C, Kyogre, and Palkia due to its ability to buy extra turns for them and them checking threats to it like Incineroar and Rotom-H. However, a few prominent weaknesses prevent Amoonguss from being a complete menace to the format. Pokemon like Incineroar, Rotom-H, and Zapdos deal heavy damage to Amoonguss and commonly use Safety Goggles to be immune to Spore and Rage Powder. Amoonguss also has a glaring weakness to Max Airstream—one of the most common Max Moves used in the format. Amoonguss can also simply be OHKOed by powerful attackers like Charizard, Calyrex-I, and Calyrex-S before they Dynamax.

Amoonguss has a fair amount of flexibility, commonly tailoring its set towards a team's specific needs. Instead of the typical EV spread, Amoonguss can run 252 Speed EVs with a Timid nature to surprise opponents with fast Spores, especially when paired with speed control such as Tailwind or Max Airstream. Instead of using Giga Drain, Amoonguss can use Energy Ball to provide additional damage against Pokemon like Gastrodon, Kyogre, and Blastoise, although Energy Ball does not hit any specific benchmarks and may not be worth giving up the recovery from Pollen Puff or Giga Drain. Foul Play is another option that can deal considerable damage to Calyrex-S and common Weakness Policy users like Solgaleo and Necrozma-DM, especially at +2, but Amoonguss's weaknesses to those Pokemon makes this is a niche option. Foul Play is best utilized on teams with Trick Room modes, where Amoonguss can move before those Pokemon. Occa Berry is another option for teams that want to shore up matchups against Pokemon like Incineroar and Rotom-H, although Amoonguss can already survive many Fire-type attacks. Due to its movepool and access to recovery through Regenerator, Amoonguss finds itself successful on defensive teams (not sure about this, you can run things like Zacian-Palkia or Dialga-Kyogre with Amoonguss and it'd help equally well in both cases) which can take advantage of the free turns that Amoonguss provides through redirection and status.
