Ambipom has always been my favorite pokemon. I love the little guy, and I was dissappointed when I saw no strategy on the new smogon b/w so I thought I'd right my favorite ambipom strat.
Unfortuantely, Ambipom hasn't altered much. There are some built in unique strategies that I'll cover later, but the strategies all require Ambipom to take atleast one hit, and Ambipom just wasn't built for that.
Lead/Hit-Run
Ambipom
Life Orb
Move Set:
Fake Out
U-Turn
Low Kick
Pursuit/Acrobatics (remove life orb if you choose acrobatics)
EV's are obv: 252 attk, 252 speed, 4 in whatever you want (probably hp/sp. def if you don't care)
Nature: Adamant
Explanation:
Ambipom is simple: use fake out -> u-turn. The other two moves are in special situations: maybe your opp switches in a dusknoir or gengar to take the fake out, and over predicting, he'll switch out give you time to pursuit. Or maybe your opp switches in blissey or snorlax to take the fake out like a bau5, giving you time to low kick. I can't tell you how many times I've owned unsuspecting people's tyranitars.
In depth:
Ambipom makes a perfect lead. Fake Out stops a spike opener, and then u-turn to another sweeper that can easily one-shot your opp's lead can devestate an opp to force to switch, letting you pull a dragons dance, swords dance, or calm mind off (assuming ambipom is faster).
Ambipom's weakness is an extra skilled player and/or using it as a extra bad player. Knowing when to abuse Ambipom's skill and when to just let it fight another day makes one player different from another, which is why it's so underused at the moment. That isn't to say that Ambipom takes the most skill to play, but average players will sometimes say that Ambipom isn't what it's so out to be with good players, simply because they don't know when to use Ambipom.
Pursuit vs. Acrobatics:
Pursuit is for more skilled players imo. Being able to predict when your opp will switch in his ghost, then switch it back out because of over prediction requires random luck, as well as skilled predictions. Using acrobatics will in the long run, benefit you more, even though you lose the extra power from life orb.
Acrobatics not only doubles from no held item, it also increases from technitician, making it amazing syngergy with ambipom. Being able to fight off those fighting types, which are normally slower than ambipom, will help you a great amount.
Other Strategies:
Lagipom
Ambipom
Lagging Tail
Move Set:
Fake Out
Payback
Revenge
Low Kick
EV's are obv: 252 attk, 252 defense, 4 hp
This set is much worse, and shouldn't be used competitively. It's mainly used to explain the new built in things that Ambipom possibly could use, but is just not good enough to use.
Criticism is welcome.
