General Overview:
More than just a pimped out Luvdisc, Alomomola is a monster of a tank. While Alomomola did not receive any direct buffs this generation, the rise of Charizard X, Talonflame, Azumarill, and Aegislash let this fat fish resurface in the OU metagame. With 165/75 physical defense along with one of the best physically defensive typings, "underrated" barely begins to even do it justice. It is able to take physical hits just as well as Skarmory or Ferro without a fire weakness so crippling in the XY metagame. Regenerator makes it a great pivot and switch-in to any attack and being one of the only physical tanks with Wish gives it utility over many of his competitors.
Potential Sets:
Physical tank
Alomomola @ Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 Def / 252 HP / 4 Atk
Impish / Bold Nature
- Waterfall / Knock Off / Scald
- Toxic
- Wish
- Protect
Good typing, good stats - Trolomomola is a behemoth of a wall and its amazing ability, Regenerator, just makes it that much more difficult to get rid of. Just as sturdy as Skarmory without the Charizard X/Talonflame-phobia or Donphan without the Water/Ice weakness. The annoying yet classic Toxic/Protect/Wish lets it stall out most physical sweepers. Waterfall is a nice STAB option that puts the hurt into frail sweepers, whereas Knock Off is a universally good option to punish switch-ins. Scald is also a staple attack for bulky waters to spread status and is often times worth it, despite utilizing his weaker attack stat. Lastly, he passes gargantuan Wishes with that sweet base 165 HP.
Mixed tank
Alomomola @ Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SDef
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Toxic
- Mirror Coat
- Wish
- Protect
Coming from Branflakes' OU team which puts a very smart spin on Mola, this set functions are more of a mixed tank with situationally higher offensive potential. Tank almost any attack (it can live any Volt Switch in the game) and hit back with a deadly Mirror Coat, and Regenerator heals off some of the damage. Retains its utility as a great Wish passer.
Checks and counters:
Set-up fodder for Steel sweepers - Bisharp, Scizor, Mawile. Weak to Volt Switch. Guts Conkeldurr is also a tough nut to crack for Mola. Can't learn Stealth Rock as opposed to most other physical tanks. Taunt also screws it over pretty hard.
Other Options:
A specially defensive set with Mirror Coat is surprisingly powerful - one of the few pokemon that check Aegisslash really well.
Conclusion:
Optimal typing, Regenerator, and Wish give Mola a partial leg up on other physical walls. Look no further for a deadstop counter to Zard X and Talonflame.
