It's been a while since I last did an RMT, but I recently climbed back up the AAA ladder from 1630 to 1800 with a crazy team I had a blast building, so this felt like time. The initial goal of this team was to break primeape; I've been pretty sure for a while that it was Rage Fist that was broken and not Annihilape, but I had never gotten around to proving it, so it was past time I fixed that. To make this happen, I recruited fellow council member and regular cobuilder of mine, Isaiah , to help me construct these flames, and it turned out better than I hoped.

The Team:
:primeape: :corviknight: :garchomp: :iron moth: :scream tail: :garganacl:

Quantum Tesseract
Help me break primeape please
I want to free annihilate
What’s some broken primeape set that comes in on everything

!Isaiah
if it's regen, we have to renconcile burning regen AND burning regen to use a primeape
if it's fluffy, maybe more flexible
We might have to use fluffy
let's see
252 Atk Choice Band Meowscarada Flower Trick vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Primeape on a critical hit: 153-180 (45.8 - 53.8%) -- 43.4% chance to 2HKO
Checked
wait, that's without sor
252 Atk Choice Band Sword of Ruin Meowscarada Flower Trick vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Primeape on a critical hit: 202-238 (60.4 - 71.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Still ate

Quantum Tesseract
Problem is knock

!Isaiah
Primeape @ Eviolite
Ability: Regenerator
Tera Type: Fighting
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Drain Punch
- Rage Fist
- Bulk Up
- Protect
scout to see if it's a move you can take?

Quantum Tesseract
Could work
No uturn is a bit rough tho

!Isaiah
Hmm
ugh
this would pair so well with teleport blissey

Quantum Tesseract
Me whenever I make a team

!Isaiah
Okay so
Primeape @ Eviolite
Ability: Fluffy
Tera Type: Fighting
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Drain Punch
- Rage Fist
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
I think this is actually better than regen
for sure
252+ Atk Life Orb Quaquaval Wave Crash vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Fluffy Primeape: 88-103 (26.3 - 30.8%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

Quantum Tesseract
Sounds good

!Isaiah
boosting rage fist on something this strong is pretty nice
also, garg
garg gives FREE boosts

Quantum Tesseract
Rlly wish I could fit 5 moves tho
Bulk up would make resttalk so much better lmao

!Isaiah
bulk up would be sick here

Quantum Tesseract
Pair with a wbb corv ofc

!Isaiah
naturally
honestly, maybe we just put a regenvest chomp on this team
to avoid blissey tank

Quantum Tesseract
Can run bb slow uturn because who cares about kingambit
Yeah exactly my thought process
Okay what do we still lose to
Hmm

!Isaiah
Glaceon
We still lose to "random" things
But let me check vr

Quantum Tesseract
Meowscarada could use a backup check, we need a greninja check, we need a backup zoroh check, a slither wing answer, a CM scream tail check

!Isaiah
so basically, what you're saying is
we need rage fist kommo-o over primeape

Quantum Tesseract
We can cover scream tail + greninja + zoroh with moth
Oh that’d be dope too

!Isaiah
we also need a thunderbolt dnite check

Quantum Tesseract
Yeah. Tbolt dnite, slither wing, backup meowscarada, dondozo
Anything else?
Oh right hatterene
And gardevoir

!Isaiah
so moth + unaware scream tail
got it

Quantum Tesseract
Scream tail works for dnite and slither and dozo
https://pokepast.es/38649450d701e20b
still need hazards and gardevoir check
ideally also not lose to meowscarada too hard but im not making it a sticking point

!Isaiah
Yeah I've realized that sticking to corv for meow never works
hm
tinkaton...?
seems terrible here

Quantum Tesseract
without regen?
yknow gholdengo would be great here
I guess we could go
garganacl

!Isaiah
issue with that is
meow

Quantum Tesseract
https://pokepast.es/c9db28e679b83695
maybe we make corv intimidate? makes ceruledge pretty dire
but might be worth
to help with meow

!Isaiah
honestly somewhat hard to say
the free fire immunity is going to be massive vs talonflame
which we're pretty annoyed by in the long run

Quantum Tesseract
oh right
forgot that guy existed

!Isaiah
BU wisp talon can def win
It wouldn't be that easy for them, but it's possible
how much is corv taking from boosted brave birds

Quantum Tesseract
okay, let's make corv bulk up over uturn
we dont need it anyway

!Isaiah
that solves it

Quantum Tesseract
im gonna try it out

!Isaiah
and give corv 12 speed
because why not

Quantum Tesseract
dont we have ape for that
fluffy ape too

!Isaiah
Oh, true
duh

Quantum Tesseract
I will go 4 speed tho obv
to catch anyone greeding

!Isaiah
Valid

Ape of Wrath (Primeape) @ Eviolite
Ability: Fluffy
Tera Type: Fighting
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Drain Punch
- Rage Fist
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

The titular Ape of Wrath himself, Primeape is - perhaps surprisingly - really good. With max defense and fluffy, it's a legitimately great physical wall - it is perhaps the hardest viable counter to Kingambit in the game, and easily switches in on pokemon like Garganacl, Corviknight, and and Dondozo to both wall them and farm Rage Fist boosts. Thanks to resttalk, it also acts as an excellent status absorber - particularly for threats like Corrosion Clodsire, on whom it can come in essentially for free. The lack of offensive investment does weaken its offensive presence somewhat, but in practice rage fist is just so strong that you can get away with Primeape's surprisingly solid uninvested attack stat. Also considered was Low Kick over Drain Punch, but while it does make getting past Fluffy Corviknight and Dondozo easier in the long run and guarentee a kill on bulky Kingambit, in the short run the healing drain punch offers is slightly more useful. In principle you could also run Earthquake + Rage Fist but missing out on Zoroark-H is just not that big a deal with this team.

corviknight.gif

Ubiquity (Corviknight) @ Leftovers
Ability: Well-Baked Body
Tera Type: Flying
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe
Impish Nature
- Bulk Up
- Brave Bird
- Roost
- Defog

Second up is Ubiquity, our Corviknight. It's technically possible to build a good AAA team without using them, but it makes things much harder on yourself for no good reason, particularly when fitting a Slither Wing for Meowscarada is hard to justify alongside Primeape. The moveset allows Corviknight to both deal with hazards and set up into a win condition late game, as well as fend off other offensive boosters by matching their increased stats. With Well Baked Body, this includes the likes of Ceruledge and Talonflame, both of whom are major threats in general and issues for Fluffy pokemon in specific. It also provides a valuable immunity to Earthquake and an emergency check to enemy Iron Moth, but given how often they run Discharge to 2hko such Corviknight the last one is risky.

garchomp.gif

Glaurung (Garchomp) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
Tera Type: Dragon
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Earthquake
- Dragon Tail
- Dragon Breath
- Poison Jab

The third pokemon to join the team is our Volt Blocker and all around special sponge, Glaurung. Regen Vest Garchomp is an extremely potent pokemon in general due to how it shuts down a lot of really threatening special attackers like Gengar and Iron Moth, but what makes this set in specific useful is our own innovation of running dragonbreath. Traditionally, you would run either rock coverage for Talonflame of Flamethrower for Corviknight, but with Talonflame already countered and Corviknight usually being WBB we decided to make it Dragon Breath. Dragon Breath does do decent damage, although nothing to write home about, but where it really shines is spreading paralysis. Would-be threats like Fluffy Corviknight become immensely less capable at walling Primeape while paralyzed, and it often acts as a great midground into enemy teams since there are a lot of offensive pokemon that don't want to run the risk. Body Slam is, of course, an option, but can trigger annoying effects like Rocky Helmet, Flame Body, and Toxic Debris that Glaurung would just as soon avoid.

iron-moth.gif

Evenstar (Iron Moth) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Desolate Land
Tera Type: Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fiery Dance
- Discharge
- U-turn
- Morning Sun

Next up is everyone's favorite broken, Iron Moth. Evenstar's set is completely bog standard, but it's the standard set for a reason; offensive Desolate Land Iron Moth is really, really good. As it always does, Iron Moth has a lot to offer us here; not only does it check water types like Greninja, absorb Toxic Spikes, spread Paralysis, and pivot, it's also an extremely powerful speed control. There are pokemon faster than Iron Moth, like Talonflame, Kilowattrel, and Meowscarada, but not many, and for the rest of the metagame Iron Moth both outruns and outguns the majority of them. Fiery Dance is chosen over Flamethrower despite the lesser immediate power and PP for the chance of snowballing in certain matchups, but both are perfectly viable options to make use of.

scream-tail.gif

Bodhisattva (Scream Tail) @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Wish
- Protect
- Calm Mind
- Dazzling Gleam

From here, we were looking very weak to setup sweepers like Dragonite, which made Scream Tail a natural pick. Unaware Scream Tail is probably the best setup answer in the tier, as not only does it wall large swathes of boosted physical attackers, it also has silly bulk with calm mind, to the point that Scream Tail can 1v1 typical Polteageist as long as it doesn't get too unlucky. Also extremely useful is the immunity to Dragon-type attacks it brings in discouraging Draco Meteors, as well as the fact that once it gets boosting Scream Tail is a lot less passive than its stats would suggest. In addition, Wish both gives it an astonishing longevity from the 16 PP recovery, but also allows it to support weakened teamates that would have a hard time switching in to heal and scouting attacks with Protect.

garganacl.gif

Edith (Garganacl) @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
Tera Type: Rock
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Salt Cure
- Recover
- Protect

Finally, the last mon to round out our team is Sand Stream Garganacl. It's one of the bulkiest special walls in the tier, second only to blissey of course, which makes it the perfect choice for taking on the really powerful special breakers like Hydreigon and Gardevoir that Garchomp doesn't match too well into. Salt Cure and Stealth Rock keep it from being too passive, while Protect is great for wracking up chip from Salt Cure and Sand while also scouting moves. This is particularly useful against pokemon like Greninja and Meowscarada who would like to force out Garganacl, but where once they are locked in switching into them is much easier.

Threats
:Garchomp: Since we're relying solely on Corviknight Defog and don't carry boots, hazard stacking can be a serious problem if there's the right team to do it. Ting Lu, Garchomp, and Clodsire are all staples of this sort of team, but AAA actually has a surprising number of pokemon that can viably set entry hazards. This matchup is never unplayable but can be rather uphill depending on details

:Gardevoir: Gardevoir, particularly Hadron Engine Gardevoir, can be a bit of a nuisance. Gardevoir doesn't actually have any reliable switchins at all, which means any games against it will rely on predictions and positioning to at least some extent. Luckily, Gardevoir is very slow and we have two protect users to scout what move it locks into.

:salazzle: Corrosion can be an issue for any balance AAA team, and ours is no exception. Thanks to resttalk Primeape and our wealth of passive recoveyr, our matchup is pretty unusually good for a team of our type, but often times you will still end up needing to pick one other pokemon to get toxiced and then protect your others from it completely. Typical users of corrosion are Clodsire and Toxapex, but others like Glimmora and Revavroom can still do it.

:zoroark-hisui: While the team can wall it with little issue thanks to Garchomp + Garganacl, Zoroark-H is immune to all of Primeape's attacks and shuts it down from getting anywhere.

:Lucario: Most fighting types are readily handled by one wall or another on this team, but MGLO Lucario in specific is extremely annoying because it's a mixed attacker with coverage for Scream Tail, our primary fighting resist, and comes in freely on Garganacl. If they don't invest in attack, Glaurung will suffice, but if they do then it can be a bit trickier. This issue can be mitigated by making Garchomp Careful over Sassy and giving it some speed investment, but is not typically worth it. Flare Blitz Slither Wing is significantly less dangerous at this than Lucario, but can also be annoying for similar reasons in a pinch.
