[OVERVIEW]

Smeargle is unique for both its excellent movepool and position as the best Moody user in the metagame. Due to its incredibly poor bulk, Smeargle is relegated to Baton Passing stat boosts to its teammates, but it can also make use of Ingrain to help prevent Pokemon with Roar from ruining Baton Pass chains and Spore to find extra setup opportunities. Smeargle is also very easy to KO without obtaining any evasion boosts from Moody, making it reliant on beneficial boosts to be successful. Additionally, Smeargle is reliant on setting up versus sleeping foes but almost every team will naturally be able to deal with this thanks to the omnipresence of Darkrai.

[SET]
name: Baton Pass
move 1: Spore
move 2: Ingrain
move 3: Spiky Shield / King's Shield
move 4: Baton Pass
item: Focus Sash
ability: Moody
nature: Timid
evs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Spore puts slower Pokemon such as support Primal Groudon to sleep, giving Smeargle extra time to accumulate Moody boosts. Spiky Shield helps to stall for extra turns, as well as dealing chip damage to Pokemon with contact attacks, while King's Shield can potentially allow Smeargle to survive attacks from weakened foes, such as avoiding the 2HKO from Extreme Killer Arceus. Ingrain helps support Smeargle's teammates by preventing phazing and providing some passive recovery, while Baton Pass passes Moody boosts and Ingrain to a teammate.

Set Details
========

Moody allows Smeargle to accumulate stat boosts without the need for setup moves. A Focus Sash allows Smeargle to survive a single attack before Baton Passing its stat boosts or putting its foe to Sleep. Maximum Speed investment and a Timid nature help Smeargle to outspeed as many foes as possible to put them to sleep before they can attack, while Maximum HP investment provides a slight bulk increase to weather weaker attacks, such as avoiding the 2HKO from Klefki's Dazzling Gleam.

Usage Tips
========

Smeargle's only function is to pass Moody boosts and Ingrain to its teammates. Ideally, Smeargle should be Baton Passed Speed boosts from a teammate such as Scolipede as it is brought in so that it can outspeed and Spore foes that would normally be faster, such as Ground Arceus. Smeargle should be brought in versus slower foes that it can put to sleep with Spore and accumulate boosts against, as any faster foe can easily KO it if its Focus Sash is broken or leave it in range of priority users. Ingrain only needs to be used if the opposing team has a foe with a phazing move, such as Primal Groudon or Skarmory, as the passive recovery is fairly useless. Stall for as many turns as possible with Spiky Shield or King's Shield in order to obtain extra Moody boosts to pass on to Smeargle's teammates, but be wary because stalling for too many turns can give time for foes to wake up or set up. This can be especially dangerous when facing priority users such as Arceus, which can KO Smeargle without giving it a second chance to put them to sleep.

Team Options
========

This set should only be used on full Baton Pass teams. Only teammates such as Scolipede, Mr. Mime, Zapdos, and others that can utilize Baton Pass to accumulate stat boosts before passing them to Espeon to sweep should be used. Entry hazard removers can be useful for keeping Smeargle's Focus Sash intact; however, they cannot be easily fit onto Baton Pass teams.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Smeargle can be run outside of full Baton Pass teams utilizing Substitute instead of Ingrain and Leftovers rather than Focus Sash to more effectively stall for Moody boosts. However, it is still unreliable at passing boosts and is extremely vulnerable to being KOed without a Focus Sash, which it cannot use without being unable to easily accumulate boosts. A hazard lead set can be run thanks to Smeargle's access to every single entry hazard and Spore, but this is generally outclassed by other leads, such as Scolipede, due to its poor Speed and bulk and inability to beat Magic Bounce or Magic Coat users. It is, however, the only viable user of Sticky Web in the metagame. Minimize can make Smeargle less reliant on grabbing evasion boosts with Moody but sacrifices a moveslot and Smeargle often lacks the free turns to set up. Magic Coat can annoy Taunt users such as Yveltal and reflect Darkrai's Dark Void, but it is often useless, as every Pokemon in the metagame not reliant on Foul Play to do damage can OHKO or 2HKO Smeargle anyway.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Faster Pokemon**: Smeargle's terrible bulk means that it's OHKOed by all faster attackers if Stealth Rock has broken its Focus Sash, including weaker attackers such as defensive Water Arceus. However, it can still put faster foes to sleep and Baton Pass out to a teammate if its Focus Sash is intact or if it gets passed Speed boosts first.

**Sleep Talk and Lum Berry**: Sleep Talk and Lum Berry users such as Ho-Oh and Mega Rayquaza are not crippled by Spore and can OHKO Smeargle before it has the time to accumulate Moody boosts.

**Taunt**: Taunt users such as Darkrai, Yveltal, and Mewtwo can render Smeargle totally useless and break its Baton Pass chain. Mega Gengar can trap Smeargle and prevent it from Baton Passing out with Taunt before KOing it.

**Mega Diancie**: Mega Diancie can reflect Spore back at Smeargle and threaten to KO it with Moonblast, as well as deal significant damage to any teammate Smeargle attempts to pass its boosts to.

**Priority**: Priority users such as Arceus and Mega Rayquaza can threaten to pick off Smeargle with Extreme Speed before it's able to pass its Moody boosts to a teammate.

Since it is now allowed as of February, I'm going to post an AM QC
Minimize is worth mentioning either in Other Options or in the main set, as it also excels at grabbing free turns and makes Smeargle less reliant on moody boosting evasion.
Magic Coat is also nice for things like bouncing back taunt, which otherwise just causes you to struggle and be useless as shown here http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-354527319

Roar/Whirlwind to checks and counters, as should Mega Diancie. It isn't grouped under sleep absorbers because you specifically talked about lum as the way around
Haze and perish song are maybes, as they do fulfill that task but are rather more niche. SImilarly, sleep talk deserves mention as majorly messing with Smeargle; specifically Xerneas, but also Ho-Oh.

Also, some things I'm not understanding about the article: When should I send it in? The first time something slower comes in? After I've neutralized certain checks/counters? Wait untill late game and my Pokemon can sweep with the boosts, or just pass whenever?

It being frail should be obvious from its stat spread- You don't need to say that outright.

Finally, why leftovers? I understand that it increases longevity, but if smeargle is in for over 8 turns it probably has all the boosts the other team will let it, or isn't in any danger of losing. For that reason, sash is far more important than other options, or at least moreso than how its described since it allows smeargle to live a hit in an emergency or save it from a 1 turn sleep.

Implemented some of these but since this is AM I'll go over what I disagree with

we have very few common taunt users, it's just not worth the moveslot. good for gar if they don't attack/sub and Psong I guess but rai can freely sub, mewtwo is rare and not worth, falling out of favor on yveltal, etc. I'd need to see multiple good replays where it does work to put this on

Roar/Whirlwind to checks and counters, as should Mega Diancie. It isn't grouped under sleep absorbers because you specifically talked about lum as the way around Diancie is good, I originally didn't include roar because smeargle can outspeed and sleep every roar user but I guess mentioning how they can wake up is enough
Haze and perish song are maybes, as they do fulfill that task but are rather more niche. SImilarly, sleep talk deserves mention as majorly messing with Smeargle; specifically Xerneas, but also Ho-Oh. haze doesn't really exist and any perish song user has other more common sets already mentioned. Small mention in phazing

Also, some things I'm not understanding about the article: When should I send it in? The first time something slower comes in? After I've neutralized certain checks/counters? Wait untill late game and my Pokemon can sweep with the boosts, or just pass whenever? I do say only bring it in on slower things and would put more in writeup, added a second bullet to make that more clear for you but this was essentially already there

It being frail should be obvious from its stat spread- You don't need to say that outright. I get you're copying what I said here but there's a difference between generally saying an arceus forme is bulky without useful context and emphasizing how incredibly frail it is, which is a massive part of how smeargle plays

Finally, why leftovers? I understand that it increases longevity, but if smeargle is in for over 8 turns it probably has all the boosts the other team will let it, or isn't in any danger of losing. You can't sub stall for moody boosts without lefties. Sash means that you have to play around hazards before getting this hard to get in pokemon inside in the first place and even then you don't have as much time to stall for boosts if ur starting at 1hp with a sleeping foe. In practice sash can be mildly annoying and fine for OO but, again, I havent seen any evidence to support anything else. Also it won't beat 1 turn sleep because bad dreams will break the sash, so only from other smeargle or something which isn't terribly relevant

Not a terrible check and helps get a few facts straight like adding diancie, but if you're looking to go into full checks then going over analysis content will be important as well, and the 2 times u did that I didn't really agree with it. PM me if u have more questions or think I didn't add something that really should go in

Not too much to say about it, and you covered most of it.

Other Options:
- Dark Void can be used to hit grass types as well, while having an 100% accutacy rate at +1. <!--I'm still ashamed you all forgot Ferro-->
- Smeargle can run alternate boosting moves like Quiver Dance and Shell Smash, however these are generally inferior to abusing Protect and Substitute and waiting to accumulate boosts.

C&C:
- Magic Coat isn't relevant as an option for Smeargle, however Taunt is surely a relevant C&C option. Yveltal, Mewtwo and Darkrai all use it as a standard option (arguable for Darkrai).
- You could change Diancie to Reflection, as even though Mega Sableye can't dent Smeargle once behind a sub and whatnot, Magic Coat users such as ExtremeKiller Arceus sure can.

In general I would like to see more emphasis on the fact that this Pokemon should mainly be used on Baton Pass and not as a standalone mon on any other archetype. This would include putting Espeon with Stored Power in Team Options and a brief statement in the overview. Otherwise, nice work. 1/3

Am checks are only counted if an official QC member stamps them, otherwise they are just feedback.
Just as a question, what grass types is dark void hitting? Arc grass is extremely meh, and amoongus shouldn't be coming in on Smeargle. I guess shaymin-sky, but...

I wouldn't put dark void in other options. When's the last time you've actually encountered a grass type in AG? It's just straight up not worth getting dicked by the miss. Amoonguss still isn't a Smeargle answer, it just sub shield stalls it and baton passes out lol. And zangooser, first of all ur implying you'll get to +1 acc in the first place and second that it's 100%, it's not, it scales. It can still miss even at +6 acc.

Zangooser: AM checks count if a qc member stamps them. I'll go ahead and stamp quantum's (so keep in mind I'm not stealing these suggestions below) but I'm on mobile and don't feel like formatting so I'm just gonna say what from his check im stamping.

Magic Coat deserves other options. Dicking the random taunt you come across like ygod's Taunt is nice, and darkrai could sub but if it subs on Smeargle's protect u can just shield and then bp out. Most Darkrais will just void because letting moody start piling up is not good. Also bounces back the odd phazing move which is dope. Taunt as well is nice like gooser said.

I also think sash should be mentioned in set not oo, Sash is the item to use on Baton Pass teams which are largely where Smeargle resides.

Nuzzle could go in OO (above void) imo, let's u actually do something if u do get taunted (especially if gengar traps you). Also being mexican is cool s/o gunner. I dunno, kinda niche but I had a lot of success with it. Paras can nab free turns quite easily with some nice yellow hax.

Dats all, so qc 2/3 including quantum.

If we want to make the set primarily for BP teams then it should be a totally different set than what's offered. Between sash, ingrain, and hugely different TO/UT that's a whole separate analysis here. When we discussed smeargle previously BP was seen as the other option not the main set. We can discuss this somewhere else and figure out what's going on and I'll either implement checks or rewrite this depending on the result but I'd rather not flood this thread about changing the set right now

I implemented most of your checks except for the parts that were no longer relevant and nuzzle yelawolf Zangooser. This is also updated to reflect Smeargle's main niche in BP, so I'm gonna wait on calling it 2/3 to see if you have anything more to say now that there have been some significant changes to certain parts thanks to the different set.

[OVERVIEW]

Additionally, Smeargle is reliant on setting up versus Sleeping foes but most every team will naturally be able to deal with this thanks to the omnipresence of Darkrai. (grammar)

move 3: Spiky Shield / King Shield
move 4: Baton Pass
item: Focus Sash
ability: Moody
nature: Timid
evs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 Spe

I personally think that King Shield can come in handy vs stuff like Ekiller, which try to just spam E-speed vs Smeargle in hopes of beating Moody. The King Shield attack drop can be significant in earning a few more turns to set up, and it can also prevent opposing foes from setting up by dropping attack. Also, Spiky Shield doesn't have any other essential traits over King Shield. I guess Spiky Shield can block status moves, but I still feel that both the moves should be described individually & slashed.

Checks and Counters
===================

You can mention Perish Trap / Haze Gengar. Though it's less significant, it's technically a check, & deserves a mention. Probably mention it last since it's least effective.

That's all, nice job.
