VGC Aerodactyl Speed Team

This is my first post to RMT, hopefully I dont mess up and get this thread locked!

While extensively testing out my team on showdown I've noticed a few problems with this team, in particular Mega Kanga and Lando-T. This is a MAJOR problem with my team seeing as both of those pokemon are in the top used of the VGCs. I also have a minor problem with Trick Room teams as my entire team is based around high speeds. Preferable I'd like to keep my Aerodactyl, Scyther and Serperior, but if reason is factored I will consider changing them. Its also worth mentioning that some work can be done on the EVs but I favored the suggested Smogon ones until I know more.

Anyway here it is:

Aerodactyl @ Aerodactylite
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 220 HP / 52 Atk / 4 Def / 4 SpD / 228 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Rock Slide
- Sky Drop
- Ice Fang
- Protect

Aerodactyl is my focal point of this team, it takes out threats such as dragons with ice fang and can neutralize any pokemon that are setting up or serious threats with Sky Drop. Protect is a clear given on this set as it not only allows saftey for one turn but also allows a hit free mega evolution if the situation allows for it. A massive problem with this set is that generally I'll send Aerodactyl out first paired with Scyther who sets up tailwind while Aerodactyl eliminates immediate threats with Sky Drop, however Intimidate users cut the damage out put of both pokemon, preventing them from attacking in the turns after tailwind is set. While This can easily be avoided by not sending Aerodactyl out first it is almost integral to most of my victories with this team to have him sent out first.

Latias @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Calm Mind
- Helping Hand
- Psyshock
- Recover

Latias was the pokemon I originally intended to build this team around, however I found a Latias/Aerodactyl lead to be ineffective. It was initially a bulky set which focuses on setting up to the point where using recover negates all damage put onto it. This set has many flaws with it and has only worked a few times. As well as the Calm Mind/Psyshock/Recover, I've also put Helping Hand on this set to contribute to the damage set by the other pokemon on my side. Latias isnt based around dealing with certain pokemon in particular but as a general special wall.

Heatran @ Air Balloon
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 176 HP / 252 SpA / 80 Spe
Modest Nature
- Heat Wave
- Earth Power
- Flash Cannon
- Protect

Heatran was added to the team in an effort to protect the Latias against fairly types which I previously had no defense against. It also stops any Ice types in their path when paired up with Aerodactyl or Scyther, using Earth Power on any electric types. I'm willing to change heatran as well seeing as once Latias is gone my weakness to fairy is also gone.

Scyther @ Eviolite
Ability: Technician
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Aerial Ace
- Bug Bite
- Tailwind

Scyther (Although not originally intended to do so) is paired with Aerodactyl as the lead, it works well as a tailwind set up, but suffers from the same problem as Aerodactyl, once intimidate pokemon appear on the field it is completely nullified. This is my reasoning for Swords Dance, allowing scyther to raise his attack back to +1 and spamming bug bite on anything I can to remove any possible berries.

Cofagrigus @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Mummy
EVs: 252 HP / 124 Def / 132 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Shadow Ball
- Will-O-Wisp
- Protect
- Pain Split

Cofagrigus is my failed solution to Kangaskhan. It was intended to stop them in their tracks through will-O-Wisp but I neglected the fact that the other pokemon on my opponents side usually has some sort of counter to Cofagrigus. He also serves as a "counter" to trick room teams, with extremely low speed if trick room is successfully set up then he can out slow certain pokemon and shadowball them.

Serperior @ Life Orb
Ability: Contrary
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Leaf Storm
- Dragon Pulse
- Substitute
- Giga Drain

Finally Serperior is my teams solution to water types. One of the weaknesses I noticed. It also helps when dealing with dragon types after setting up a leaf storm. Serperior's Item is also very damaging, the added damage of attacks and life orb recoil starts to stack up and Serperior tends to last a shorter amount of times then other pokemon on the team. Unfortunatly it contributes to my teams weakness to Ice Types but can handle most pokemon bearing Ice type moves (Water types or Water/Ice Types)

Extra Options
One of the pokemon I've considered is Bisharp, not only does it counter my weakness to fairy, but it also causes opponents to think twice before sending out intimidate pokemon. However Bisharp will only serve to be another pokemon that Kangaskhans and Lando-T can easily destroy.

This team feels mediocre, barely breaking even wins, but I hope to improve it and win more since it counters some of the biggest threats I've seen in actual VGC tournaments.

You know how you said you wanted Bisharp on your team. Well it runs circles around your team as well as Hydreigon and Aegislash. Well I'd replace probably replace Latias with Bisharp as Calm Mind ain't that great in VGC. Bisharp helps with your crazy Ice and Rock weaknesses. I know this isn't helping your Kang weakness but you could replace Cofagrigus with Conkeldurr or something like that. That is I'll give today good luck with your team.

Thanks! I'm looking to make multiple versions of my team and testing them out separately so I'll give this one a try soon. Any suggestions for sets I could use of the Bisharp/Conkeldurr would be very much appreciated!

Yo, sweet team man! Aerodactyl is a super fun Mega to use and I'm glad that more people are using it more! There are a few moveset changes though that I suggest you switch to. For starters, that Aerodactyl spread was for VGC 2014 if i recall correctly so I suggest you change Aerodactyl's spread to a simple spread of 28 HP / 252 Atk / 228 Spe with a Jolly Nature. One of the major things that Mega Aerodactyl has is that as long as it has 204+ Speed EVs, it is able to outrun Scarf Adamant Landorus-T and potentially OHKO it with Ice Fang; however, max Attack is needed because Aerodactyl, even with it, has a pretty small chance at OHKOing Landorus-T. It's damage output would also be pretty poor without max Attack investment. This is also a pretty minor change but I suggest changing Aerodactyl's base ability to Unnerve, as that has the most utility. It stops the activation of a Berry, more than likely a Sitrus Berry, which is super important, as that can allow you to wear down bulky Water-types that tend to carry Sitrus Berry, such as Milotic, Suicune, and Rotom-W, with Serperior.

As an offensive Dragon-type, Latias is heavily outclassed by Hydreigon and Latios; and as a bulky Calm Mind user, Cresselia is WAY better than Latias. One of the biggest niches that Latias has over all of these Pokemon is its amazing support movepool coupled by a fast Tailwind. So I suggest you change Latias's moveset to Draco Meteor / Ice Beam | Psychic | Helping Hand | Tailwind with a spread of 236 HP / 4 Def / 12 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe and a Timid Nature. Like I mentioned above, Latias is heavily outclassed by Cresselia as a Calm Mind user, as it doesn't have the bulk to reliably set it up. The above moveset takes advantage of all of Latias's niche. Fast Tailwind with a good typing gives it an edge over other bulky Psychic-types. The first slot is honestly up to you. Ice Beam gives it an edge over other Dragon-types, as that allows Latias to reliably check Landorus-T; however, later on in the rate I'll be introducing a Pokemon that completely counters Landorus-T so you might want to use Draco Meteor if you feel you already have it covered. Psychic is preferred over Psyshock because this year, VGC is super physically oriented, so bulky Pokemon that Psychic would hit, such as Amoonguss and Mega Venusaur, will tend to run more Defense than Special Defense. The above spread allows Latias to 2HKO standard Amoonguss and Mega Venusaur with Psychic and 4 HP non-Assault Vest Landorus-T with Ice Beam; the rest was distributed into HP to give it good overall bulk.

  • 12 SpA Latias Psychic vs. 252 HP / 44 SpD Amoonguss: 128-152 (57.9 - 68.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
  • 12 SpA Latias Psychic vs. 252 HP / 52 SpD Mega Venusaur: 92-110 (49.1 - 58.8%) -- 98.4% chance to 2HKO
  • 12 SpA Latias Ice Beam vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Landorus-T: 180-216 (109 - 130.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Air Balloon Heatran is alright, but honestly Shuca Berry is MUCH more reliable, as it doesn't "break" after being hit with any damaging move, which is problematic, as Heatran should be switching in constantly to block Ice-type attacks aimed at Mega Aerodactyl and Serperior. I also suggest you switch Heatran's EV spread to 44 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 204 Spe with a Modest Nature. Bisharp is currently a pretty big threat to your team. With this spread, Heatran is able to outrun Bisharp and OHKO it with a Heat Wave, while the HP and Defense EVs alongside Shuca Berry allows Heatran to tank an Earthquake from Scarf Landorus-T.

252+ Atk Landorus-T Earthquake vs. 44 HP / 4 Def Shuca Berry Heatran: 144-170 (83.7 - 98.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Serperior is actually super legit. Despite its somewhat predictable moveset alongside its less-than-stellar coverage moves, its still a massive powerhouse with Leaf Storm. Because its such a powerhouse, once it has a boost in, most opponents will tend to target into it before it can be a huge threat. That's why I suggest replacing Substitute with Protect, as that can allow you to take advantage of a careless double target and punish your opponents for it. While I know that you have Giga Drain, Substitute alongside Life Orb will wear down Serperior very easily, which is terrible, as Serperior wants to do as much damage before it faints.

Scyther, despite being a cool-looking Pokemon, doesn't perform that well to be honest. I've added Tailwind onto Latias, so Scyther is pretty irrelevant on your team. It adds to the Ice weakness while not even offering anything that can counterbalance that. I suggest replacing Scyther with Rotom-W. Rotom-W gives your team an immediate counter to Landorus-T and Heatran, which your team is currently pretty weak to, as well as an Ice resist. Rotom-W also helps a lot with the Sand matchup, which is something your team is currently pretty weak to. Shrop05's spread of 252 HP / 124 Def / 76 SpA / 36 SpD / 20 Spe with a Calm Nature is by far my favorite Rotom-W spread for this meta, as it can tank a Solar Beam from Timid Charizard Y, OHKO 4 HP Talonflame with Thunderbolt (so you don't have to risk using Hydro Pump), and has good Defense investment that lets it handle physical attacks a lot better.

  • 252 SpA Mega Charizard Y Solar Beam vs. 252 HP / 36+ SpD Rotom-W: 132-156 (84 - 99.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Sitrus Berry recovery
  • 252 Atk Parental Bond Mega Kangaskhan Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 124 Def Rotom-W: 126-151 (80.2 - 96.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Sitrus Berry recovery
Offensively
  • 76 SpA Rotom-W Thunderbolt vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Talonflame: 156-186 (101.2 - 120.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Finally, for your last slot, I suggest replacing Cofagrigus with Aegislash. Cofagrigus is a HUGE momentum sapper because it doesn't do anything. Even in Trick Room, I don't find myself using this thing due to how passive it is and it's definitely not a fit on such a fast, offensive team like yours. Aegislash provides the same Ghost coverage as Cofagrigus, checks Kangaskhan, offers much needed Wide Guard support (your team is pretty weak to common spread moves like Earthquake and Rock Slide), and gives you another Ice-type resist. A spread of 252 HP / 100 SpA / 156 SpD allows Aegislash to survive a Choice Specs Dark Pulse from Modest Hydreigon and OHKO it back with a +2 Flash Cannon. Generally Aegislash's tend to run 0 Spe IVs alongside a Quiet Nature, as Aegislash wants to be as slow as possible so it can tank a hit and then hit back hard in Blade Forme.

Once again man, really sweet team! I like how you're using more underused Pokemon and I wish more people would do that! Your team is still a little weak against sun and rain; however, Latias does very well against those playstyles so as long as you can set up Tailwind, you should be good. Hope I helped man and good luck with the team!!! :]

Wow! Thanks for the rate, The suggested pokemon are very useful towards my team, with Latias running tailwind it makes sense that Scyther is rendered useless. I'll be testing this team out for a reasonable amount of time, getting used to it before making my final decision. The Aegislash crossed my mind a couple of times while thinking of counters for Mega-Kanga, I decided to choose Cofagrugius as a way of removing Parental Bond but predictably that didn't work out. The Rotom-Wash also makes a lot of sense, I dont know why I didnt even think of it.

Once again thanks for the great Rate, This is my favourite metagame but I've always had trouble team building for it. I'll be using it a lot to get the hang of it before I can decide if its the best team for me though!
