Hiya! I'm new to teambuilding, have played ADV OU for a while with some sample teams. An idea popped into my head to make this strange rain + explosion/self-destruct team, in which I hoped to make use of Qwilfish's unique traits (swift swim + spikes + self-destruct) as well as its defensive synergy with claydol (able to take all moves SE against qwilfish)
The general idea here was to use endure salac magneton to eliminate skarmory (and possibly set rain), self-destruct/explosion on regirock, qwilfish + claydol to clear out physical walls and spinners, and then use rain dance ludicolo and sub salac heracross to clean up.
As mentioned earlier, I'm still quite new to teambuilding, so I'd expect a lot of this doesn't work too well (or there are better pokemon to fill team slots)
Regirock @ Leftovers
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Rock Slide
- Focus Punch
- Thunder Wave
- Explosion
Goal is to improve matchup against zapdos + salamence, paralyze or chip a few pokemon, then hopefully blow up and take something out (trading with a bulky water seems generally useful for the rest of the team)
Qwilfish
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 104 HP / 252 Atk / 152 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Rain Dance
- Spikes
- Shadow Ball
- Self-Destruct
Can switch-in against toxic + water types (and ice beam + toxic blissey), self-destruct can stop suicune and mayyybe milotic (still quite scared of this matchup) from ruining my day. Can make spikes + blow up to prevent a rapid spin. So far not as bad as I expected- shadow ball is to surprise gengar in the rain + to help against rapid spinners
Magneton @ Salac Berry
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 52 HP / 252 SpA / 204 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 2 Atk / 30 Def
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Endure
- Rain Dance
Here to do its usual job. HP ice for salamence which could otherwise be an uphill battle. Endure + salac ensures I can get a rain dance off in a nasty matchup, or kill a chipped dugtrio (not sure if 75% chip bulky dug dies to HP ice). endure -> salac -> rain dance -> dying allows me to get in either of my swift swim pokemon. The ideal with magneton is to take out a skarmory, preventing spikes, then get rain dance up allowing qwilfish to set spikes clearly
Claydol @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 216 Atk / 32 SpA / 8 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Rapid Spin
- Earthquake
- Psychic
- Explosion
Rapid spin + access to explosion. Absorbs tbolt + EQ (and takes little damage from psychic) that would threaten qwilfish
Ludicolo @ Leftovers
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 152 HP / 252 SpA / 104 Spe
Modest Nature
- Rain Dance
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam
- Leech Seed
My team's main win condition. Chosen over kingdra for better matchup against swampert + milotic, plus ability to eat leech seed from celebi
Heracross @ Salac Berry
Ability: Swarm
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
IVs: 30 HP
- Swords Dance
- Megahorn
- Substitute
- Rock Slide
I wasn't too sure what to run in my last slot, and included subsalac heracross (admittedly my favorite pokemon) to help clean up in scenarios where ludicolo wouldn't be able to (and since, with 3 rain setters, I think I have a solid shot at clearing weather).
Let me know what you think! I recognize this team is not particularly competitive (which may be the nature of the concept + use of qwilfish) but I'd still love to find ways to make it better. Thank you!
