Finally getting to this. Placeholder.

The Battle Tower in Pokemon Crystal is considerably simpler than in later generations. In each category, each Pokemon has only one possible set, so as soon as you encounter a Pokemon, you know its stats, item and moves, something Battle Tower players in later generations sorely miss.

In Pokemon Crystal, there are ten categories in all, and each corresponds to a maximum level that is a multiple of ten. While there is no way to record your streak, the Battle Tower’s incentive is to instead give you free Vitamins each time you complete a set of 7 battles.

Rules
You may enter 3 Pokemon for a challenge.
No 2 Pokemon of the same species may be used.
No 2 Pokemon may hold the same item.
Mewtwo, Mew, Celebi, Ho-oh and Lugia cannot be used in categories with the maximum level below 70.

Illegal Combinations
The following groups of Pokemon will never be seen together on a team in the Battle Tower. This is because they hold the same item.

Aerodactyl+Espeon
Blissey+Mr.Mime
Heracross+Houndour+Miltank+Sneasel+Umbreon
Jolteon+Kangaskhan+Lapras+Snorlax
Misdreavus+Wobbuffet
Exeggutor+Girafarig+Tauros

This can be used to your advantage when you are in a battle, so you know what Pokemon your opponent does not have and can adjust your strategy accordingly.

Strategy
At level 10, most Pokemon have very low HP. This can be exploited using the move Dragon Rage. Since Dragon Rage deals 40 flat damage, it will either OHKO or 2HKO all the Pokemon the Battle Tower uses. As a bonus, the Battle Tower does not use Pokemon with perfect IVs, so Pokemon that have been bred for good IVs stand an advantage. A good user of this strategy is Aerodactyl, who at maximum speed IVs can outspeed evey Pokemon in the Battle Tower. With Dragon Rage, it can OHKO a good many Pokemon before they can even move, and the remaining Pokemon usually cannot OHKO it, so it will KO them the next turn with ease. Given below is an example of a team revolving around the strategy Dragon Rage:-

Aerodactyl@Gold Berry
-Dragon Rage
-Wing Attack
-Hidden Power Bug
-Reflect / Toxic / Substitute

Aerodactyl makes for a solid lead in the Battle Tower, and with Dragon Rage, it often doesn’t need any coverage moves, due to Dragon Rage usually outdamaging them. The exceptions are Wing Attack, which allows Aerodactyl to OHKO Heracross, and Hidden Power Bug, which always outdamages Dragon Rage against Exeggutor and has a chance to OHKO it. Aerodactyl has no true use for its last moveslot, and can run any support move it wishes to.

Smeargle@Berry
-Dragon Rage
-Spore
-Substitute
-Agility

Smeargle’s premise is very simple; after switching in, it uses Spore to put its opponent to sleep, then uses Substitute to provide itself a buffer, and then Agility, so as to outspeed every Pokemon in the Battle Tower. Once this is done, Smeargle can proceed to sweep with Dragon Rage. Smeargle’s hold item ensures that after potentially taking a hit, it will always have enough HP to create a Substitute.

Lapras@Leftovers
-Dragon Rage
-Perish Song
-Reflect
-Surf

Lapras is the final Pokemon on the team. Lapras is relatively slow, and without a way to boost its Speed, it will not sweep like Aerodactyl and Smeargle. Instead, Lapras is a bulky tank, and depends on taking a hit before KOing back. Outside of Dragon Rage, Lapras does not have many options for the Battle Tower, and can run whatever moves it wishes to.
