Suspect Pokebilities AAA Suspect #1: By The Ocean (Manaphy)

Miss Crisis

currently Miss Crisis
:sv/manaphy:
Welcome to the very first PokeAAA Suspect Test! Manaphy was banned early into Generation 9, after a brief period of dominance as the metagame's premier setup sweeper. The primary ability choice, Primordial Sea, not only boosts Manaphy's STAB moves, but also allows Hydration to cure Manaphy's status condition at the end of the turn, enabling the fantastic Rest + Hydration combination. Between Tail Glow's +3 boost, an unprecedentedly powerful recovery option, a limited dex, and the limit of a single Regenerator user per team, Manaphy ate the tier alive. Four Pokemon could be relied upon to check it: Clodsire, Skeledirge, Slowking, and Toxapex. Notably, Slowking and Toxapex took up the Regenerator slot on a team, and the other two were passive and easily abuseable by Manaphy's teammates. Manaphy was even able to run Psychic for Toxapex, Energy Ball for Slowking, or simply elect to tank their hits and fish for Status with Scald or Ice Beam.

It's been nearly three years since, and Manaphy has never gotten a chance to play around in the modern tier, where much more viable counterplay exists to it. Nowadays, Clodsire, Slowking, and Desolate Land Heatran are defensive staples, common offensive Pokemon like Meowscarada and Ogerpon-Wellspring tear it apart, 2 Ability Clause has expanded the variety of Regenerator core components, and Water Absorb and Desolate Land see far more usage in the presence of Weatherspeed. Additionally, Manaphy's 4 Moveslot Syndrome was not solved in the years since its ban; Tail Glow sets are forced to pick between Energy Ball, Ice Beam, and Psychic, all of which leave it vulnerable to a different defensive staple. Manaphy would appear to have two distinct roles within the tier: primarily its incredibly solid RegenVest pivot like in AAA, but also as a setup sweeper able to bypass Ting-Lu. To many of us, the tier looks prepared for the return of Manaphy, but the real question is: are you?
  • In the second Pokebilities AAA survey, a 68% supermajority indicated interest in Suspect Testing Manaphy. No action was taken at this time, as two team tournaments (AAAPL and TPP) were taking place in the near future.
  • In the leadup to the third Pokebilities AAA survey, towards the end of TPP, the council received feedback that the format was not as competitive as it could be, and that several Pokemon in the tier were constraining in the builder. The council identified Iron Hands, Meowscarada, Samurott-Hisui, Talonflame, and Tornadus-Therian as the most constraining factors in the teambuilder and during gameplay.
  • The results of the third survey did not indicate that a specific Pokemon was seen as the primary issue by the public, with a plurality of voters suporting no action on Iron Hands, Meowscarada, Samurott-Hisui, Talonflame, or Tornadus-Therian.
  • The council discussed a potential unban wave of several Pokemon that may deserve a chance in the tier, such as Archaludon, Floatzel, Ursaluna-Blood-Moon, Victreebel, and Yanmega. The council voted 6-0 to on take action on Manaphy first, as the suspect had previously established support and a tier with RegenVest Manaphy present would make several of these Pokemon easier to handle.

The instructions to participate in this suspect are as follows:
  • Create a new account on PS. You do not have to follow any specific naming convention, but your suspect account must have never played a game in Pokebilities AAA before this suspect test went up or you will not receive valid requirements (resetting W-L does not count for this—the account you use must never have played Pokebilities AAA before the test, full stop.)
    • You can use /rank to check if your alt is allowed to get requirements. Whenever in doubt, type /rank and it will tell confirm if you are eligible or not
  • At any point on your new account, use the command /linksmogon on Pokemon Showdown! You will receive instructions on what to do once you run this command.
  • Double check that you're listed as a voter here! If you aren't listed as a voter despite having valid reqs, please contact dhelmise, Giagantic, or any other OM/OMM Staff member.
  • If you have any questions about this new process, feel free to PM dhelmise!
The requirement to vote in this suspect test is a COIL value of 2850 (with a B Value of 5). The deadline for getting requirements ends on <t:1794286800:F>.

So just got done with my suspect test reqs (about 75 games) and ngl, my impressions so far have been this-

Manaphy is the most meh Pokemon ever. It's a nice regenvester with some good utility with Knock/Scald/Uturn, nice bulk, an unfortunately fast speed tier for a slow pivot but it abuses rain because it also lets it heal off status alongside resisting water moves, but other than that it REALLY isn't anything special. Setup Manaphy (or at least Tail Glow) is the most bait thing I've ever seen. We have WAY too many water immunities, and even for water attackers there are COUNTLESS mons that are either bulkier, faster, stronger, or have better coverage/STAB moves than Manaphy could ever dream of, with actual abilities. Also, the fact that every team and its mother has a DesoLand mon makes PrimSea Manaphy just a genuine 5/6 mon. Something also tells me the story will be the exact same for the Take Heart set, though at least with that one you can run something like Cloud Nine or an immunity ability.

With its performance while I was playing with it, I have genuinely 0 idea how this was banned for so long to begin with. It really didn't even need a suspect test imo. Like, it's probably A- at BEST on the VR.

EDIT: Oop forgot to attach a screenshot

Gonna be so real this team was... fine. I think ESurge CB Treads is honestly the most interesting part about this team, as CB Steel Roller hits disgustingly hard while with ESurge Treads has a monstrous speed tier. Manaphy was kinda just there to be a bulky water. Otherwise it did fine.

Decided to try out Manaphy on stall. Felt, once again, fine, though I think I could've gotten better mileage out of other bulky waters. Having a bulky water with a pivot move, Scald and knock was nice role compression though, but it also just... can't beat a lot of rain abusers like Zapdos anyways so... yeah... AV SpD Mola is probably just better lmfao.

And lastly the team that finished my reqs. Pretty happy with it. Manaphy once again was just fine at best, it REALLY didn't do anything special. I'll be honest, I never bothered really with Tail Glow, and everytime I faced it I just walled it and/or blew it up. It just doesn't do enough. Shout out to CB Talon, it's grossly strong as an attacker, and Stamina Prima pulled out a lot of wins for me especially with Sub. Oh, and Ting hazard stack is broken can we please suspect test it.

But yeah you'll notice Manaphy really wasn't the focal point of any of these teams. It just really does nothing special, idk what more to say. It's a boring mon, with alright stats, a 'good enough' movepool with the only real interesting thing being Tail Glow and Knock, but it just doesn't do anything special that other mons don't do just a bit better. The prevalence of Primal Weather, Water Absorb and whatnot because of the sheer number of water nukes in the tier like Keldeo, Barra, Woger, etc. just makes it so that Manaphy is just another water type among MANY to be walled as well if you try to lean into its offensive sets, so it's stuck being a utility defensive mon.

DNB.

Dead ladder oml.
Got robbed in one, zoned out in another, and used a bad version of a team in the last loss... shoutout to the Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness OST for helping lock in and go 17-0 late in the run after I was bad early on.

Anyway, Manaphy is probably fine. RegenVest seems more than bearable for the tier, especially with how good I rate Clodsire and Hoodra, and then offensive variations are probably a bit cringe but still totally manageable overall. I don't foresee any issues with Manaphy in the tier and think if anything there are plenty of existing mons/comps that could have been considered for a suspect, but I digress. Gonna vote to free unless I can be convinced otherwise.

This mon would be a much more interesting piece if stored power wasn’t banned. At the moment it just gets walled by too much to be anything threatening, and is at best fish/a good late game set up mon. It is a bit unique with TG TH, but again, no stored power. (Unban stored power).

Ignore the dicking around in ConvMegamons lmao

This suspect test was a bit rough at the start 'cuz exams have been slamming me in the rear (don't take Physical Chemistry) and I had to de-rust a bit, but it was fun nonetheless. I started this req process on another account trying out Manaphy on the ladder, while also asking other suspect testers their thoughts on the blue blob.

Yeah......this thing is perfectly fine.

Trying to make a Water-type Special Attacker work in this tier is already a pain in the ass, and one as inflexible as Mana is pretty ill-equipped to do anything. It really needs Stored Power to even think about breaking through Heatran, Clodsire, and Slowking-G (so tough luck lmao). 100 Base Speed in Gen 9 is so hilariously mid, it's crazy; you get destroyed by Wellspring, Meow, some sets of Torn, Talon, WeatherSpeeders, etc., and you don't even have priority (ala Lokix, Rillaboom) or other cool offensive tools (ala Ceaseless on Samu) to compensate. Free Rest healing and +3 SpeAtk doesn't really mean anything when you can't kill the wall in front of you, or are getting one-shot by the faster breaker that came in. Offensively, it's simply both outclassed and ill-suited for the meta: if you want strong Specs Water, Keldeo and Gren; hell, if you want a set-up Special Water, Slowking-Regular is honestly better.

Thus, it really only has defensive sets to work with, and those are actually quite nice, but far from banworthy. The main one is RegenVest obviously, cuz defensive PrimSea is just....Alo but no Regen. Even in this role though, you would generally much rather use Iron Hands, but there's definitely a place for it as a RegenVest Water that doesn't get miserably shut down by Heatran.

(which for me personally, is perfect because fuck Heatran; god I wish GameFreak gave this thing reliable recovery or Strength Sap or Shell Smash or something so that I have a good reason to kick it out of tier)

Edit: here's the team if you want; it's just an updated version of a SFLO Torn balance I made a while ago

Team used, nothing wild. either meow or talon could be MGLO instead of band if you want. lightning rod > vabs on slowking imo, at this for this team since offensive primsea zap gets put into CB talon's BB range by +1 rain-boosted scald.

DNB, I had a little trouble against regenvest manaphy during the run bc I played bad and didn't have a water immune, but it certainly didn't feel overly restricting. regen boots tail glow/take heart feels worth exploring. like people are saying primsea is fine, it honestly faces competition from CM primsea vaporeon (which RULES) since the role compression of a water+fire immunity is so valuable.

Betticus IV ban me if you see me on here too much plz I'm literally gonna fail my med school boards
