Assault Vest Hoopa-U serves as a great defensive and offensive piece for Psychic teams easily handling the likes of Kyurem and Gholdengo for its teammates. Psychic is Hoopa-U's strongest offensive option handling threats like Iron Moth and Walking Wake. Alternatively Psychic Noise, while a drop in power, enables Hoopa-U to greatly impede the likes of Hatterene and CM Primarina by denying them access to Draining Kiss. Knock Off threatens Ghost-types and opposing Psychic-types like Gholdengo, Flutter Mane, and Latios along with hindering checks to Hoopa-U and its teammates reliant on their held items such as Assault Vest Tornadus-T and Alolan Muk. Focus Blast rips through Steel- and Dark-types like Archaludon, Heatran, and Darkrai. Drain Punch can also be used over Focus Blast to better handle Blissey and Hisuian Goodra. Finally Thunderbolt shocks Flying- and Water-types such as Skarmory and Slowbro. The given EV spread allows Hoopa-U to outspeed Modest Magnezone while only having minor chance of being 2HKOed by Choice Scarf Flutter Mane's Moonblast after a layer of Spikes.
With its low physical bulk and less than stellar speed, Hoopa-U is greatly reliant on teammates such as Hatterene and Slowbro to come in and check foes like Kleavor while providing speed control through Nuzzle and Thunder Wave respectively allowing Hoopa-U to outspeed threats such as Hisuian Zoroark and opposing Hoopa-U. Hatterene checks Dark-types like Choice Scarf Meowscarada and Roaring Moon for Hoopa-U along with preventing status and hazards from foes such as Gliscor and Ting-Lu with Magic Bounce. Slowbro meanwhile can assist against Fire- and Water-types like Cinderace, Hisuian Arcanine, and Urshifu-R and can use Body Press to help break through Dark-types like Hisuian Samurott if using a Colbur Berry or go itemless to handle Ceruledge and physical Hisuian Zoroark. Metagross provides Stealth Rocks for Hoopa-U wearing down checks such as Scizor and Tornadus-T and is capable of using Bullet Punch to pick of faster targets like Mamoswine, Iron Valiant and Flutter Mane. Choice Specs Latios provides an nice Ground immunity through levitate enabling it to help ward off Landorus and Gliscor while also being able to use options such as Draco Meteor cleanly remove the likes of Kyurem and Dragonite. Choice Scarf Indeedee-M can check Ghost-types like Ceruledge and Spectrier due to its Normal typing along being able to use Healing Wish to keep Hoopa-U healthy in a pinch. Indeedee-M also sets Psychic Terrain with its ability Psychic Surge preventing Hoopa-U from being picked off by Aqua Jet Azumarill while also increasing the potency of Hoopa-U's Psychic-type STAB. Choice Scarf Iron Boulder provides incredible Speed control handling faster threats like Ogerpon-H, Kleavor, and Meowscarada for Hoopa-U while greatly appreciating Hoopa-U removing physical walls like Skarmory.
