[SET]
Zygarde @ Leftovers
Ability: Power Construct
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 252 HP / 212 Def / 44 SpD
Impish Nature
- Thousand Waves
- Coil
- Scale Shot
- Rest
[SET COMMENTS]
* Trapper Zygarde is an unique set choice that trades the defensive utility of Coil sets to take on a more situational setup sweeper role, often winning games on the spot if it finds a suitable target to trap, such as non-Tera Fairy Zygarde, defensive Primal Groudon, Ferrothorn, and Dondozo lacking a Water-type move. It best fits on balance and offense teams that have other means to deal with Ho-Oh, since this Coil set struggles specifically against Ho-Oh.
* Scale Shot's Speed boost gives Zygarde a means of deterring revenge kill attempts from faster threats such as Spectral Thief Marshadow, Eternatus, and offensive Primal Kyogre after two speed boosts. At +6 Attack, it OHKOes offensive Yveltal and offensive Ho-Oh with 4 hits, and OHKOes defensive Ho-Oh with 5 hits.
* 44 SpD EVs allow Zygarde to survive an unboosted Dynamax Cannon from Eternatus from full, while rest of the EVs are invested so as to maximize physical bulk in order to set up on foes such as Primal Groudon safely.
* Tera Fairy notably prevents phazing attempts from other Zygarde's Dragon Tail. Moreover, Zygarde-Complete's great special bulk with minimal investment lets it trap and set up on Arceus-Dark, and defensive Arceus-Fairy lacking Taunt. In a pinch, it also grants an immunity to Ultra Necrozma's Outrage and Eternatus's Dynamax Cannon.
* The lack of utility moves such as Glare and Dragon Tail renders Zygarde worse into physical attackers such as Swords Dance Primal Groudon, Zacian-C, Mega Salamence, and Dragon Dance Arceus-Ground. It is thus necessary not to rely on Zygarde for checking the aforementioned threats and it should be treated as a setup sweeper, instead of a wall.
* Opposing Tera Fairy Zygarde prevents trapper Zygarde from getting Speed boosts, with Glare and Toxic variants in particular being problematic due to higher PP and depleting Rest quickly, respectively. However, non-Tera Fairy sets are easily trapped. Furthermore, Primal Groudon users that occasionally stay on Zygarde to set up Stealth Rock or use Toxic, are also great targets for trapping with Thousand Waves. Similarly, Calm Mind Arceus-Dark can potentially lose against Tera Fairy Zygarde as Scale Shot lets the latter bypass Taunt.
* Teammates such as Primal Groudon, defensive Kyogre-Primal, and IronPress Garganacl are good partners that can compensate for the lack of defensive capabilities, particularly against threats like Zacian-C, Dragon Dance Necrozma-DM, and Ho-Oh. Revenge killers such as Ditto and Choice Scarf Yveltal also aid Zygarde by stopping setup sweepers like Arceus-Ground and Eternatus from getting out of hand. They are especially valuable for covering the hyper offense matchup in which Zygarde tends to be mostly deadweight, bar niche cases such as trapping lead Ribombee after Terastalizing.
* Zygarde's trapping capabilities work excellently with wallbreakers like Swords Dance Zacian-C, Dragon Dance Necrozma-DM, and Eruption Primal Groudon that appreciate its capability to force Terastallization from opposing Zygarde and weaken the opposing defensive core by eliminating walls such as Zygarde and Primal Groudon.
