Calm Mind
Raging Bolt @ Leftovers
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Fairy / Grass
EVs: 252 HP / 188 Def / 68 SpA
Modest Nature
IVs: 20 Atk
- Thunderclap
- Dragon Pulse
- Calm Mind
- Protect
[OVERVIEW]
Raging Bolt is able to leverage its good natural bulk, a great Special Attack stat and an excellent STAB combination that allows it to hit much of the tier for respectable damage to become one of the metagame's most threatening setup sweepers.
[SET COMMENTS]
• Thunderclap lets Raging Bolt circumvent its mediocre Speed to get the jump on offensive threats that would force it out, such as Chien-Pao, and nab revenge KOs on weakened foes. Thunderbolt can also be used in place of Thunderclap, (AC) as the latter can be exploited by redirection like Follow Me as well as Dragon-resistant Pokemon such as Gholdengo using stat-boosting moves like Nasty Plot.
• Dragon Pulse gives Raging Bolt a way to deal with common Dragon-types, such as Dragonite, Regidrago and Gouging Fire, as well as the Grass- and Ground-types that aren't threatened by its Electric-type coverage.
• Calm Mind boosts Raging Bolt's already high Special Attack stat while increasing its special bulk, letting it function as a dangerous win condition that can quickly snowball out of control if left unchecked. Raging Bolt's natural typing also allows it to resist attacks from common physical attackers, such as Ogerpon-W, Ogerpon-H, and Rillaboom, which provides Raging Bolt more opportunities to set up with Calm Mind.
• Leftovers gives Raging Bolt more staying power, as the passive recovery it provides in addition to the stat boosts from Calm Mind makes Raging Bolt harder to KO. It also helps to negate any chip damage that Raging Bolt may receive. Booster Energy provides Raging Bolt with more immediate power at the cost of forgoing the added longevity provided by Leftovers. Covert Cloak can also be used to allow Raging Bolt to ignore the secondary effects of Fake Out, Mortal Spin, and Snarl, all of which can otherwise be quite troublesome.
• Tera Fairy offers Raging Bolt a useful immunity to the Dragon-type moves that normally threaten it; this allows it to completely flip the matchup against Regidrago, which would otherwise pose as a big obstacle. Tera Fairy also gives Raging Bolt a more neutral type matchup across the board, aiding it in its role as a bulky setup sweeper. Tera Grass provides Raging Bolt with a resistance to Ground-type moves, which improves its matchups against Landorus and Ursaluna-B, as well as useful immunities to Spore, Rage Powder, and Sleep Powder.
• The EV spread allows Raging Bolt to survive an Ice Spinner from Life Orb Chien-Pao and a +2 Kowtow Cleave from Kingambit.
• Raging Bolt pairs well with Pokemon that provide it with opportunities for setting up with Calm Mind, such as Fake Out users like Rillaboom and Incineroar, as well as redirection support from the likes of Ogerpon-W and Amoonguss. Raging Bolt also pairs well with Landorus, which can beat the Steel- and Fairy-types such as Kingambit, Diancie, and Gholdengo that Raging Bolt struggles with; conversely, Raging Bolt is strong against the Flying-types that can freely switch in on Landorus's Ground-type STAB moves and the Water-types such as Ogerpon-W that offensively threaten it. Raging Bolt also pairs well with Sinistcha, as the latter provides additional longevity with its ability Hospitality while helping to cover for the former's Ground-type weakness with the redirection provided by Rage Powder.
