Araquanid @ Leftovers
Name: Iron Defense (Bug)
Ability: Water Bubble
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Iron Defense
- Liquidation
- Infestation
- Rest
[SET COMMENTS]
Thanks to its unique ability and Water typing, Araquanid finds itself a niche outside of being a Sticky Web setter on Bug-type teams as a strong defensive option against brutal Fire-type attacks such as Flare Blitz and Flamethrower. Its naturally high Special Defense stat allows it to check threatening special attackers in Heatran and opposing Volcarona. Iron Defense allows Araquanid to boost alongside potent metagame setup sweepers and ignore their threat, such as Gouging Fire and Ceruledge, both of which prove troublesome to Bug-type teams. Infestation allows Araquanid to trap setup sweepers and bulkier Pokemon alike such as the aforementioned Gouging Fire and Quagsire, allowing it to freely boost with Iron Defense and take them on with Liquidation.
Forretress provides a crucial type neutrality to Rock- and Flying-type attacks headed towards Araquanid while also removing entry hazards with Rapid Spin. In return, Araquanid helps take on the aforementioned Fire-types such as Gouging Fire and Volcarona. Choice Scarf Kleavor is another teammate for Bug teams, as it threatens Fire- and Flying-type threats like Ogerpon-H, Choice Band Hisuian Arcanine, and Gyarados with its Rock-type STAB moves, while also threatening Heatran with Close Combat. Additionally, it can set Stealth Rock with Stone Axe, forming an entry-hazard stacking core with Spikes from Forretress. Volcarona and Frosmoth are both powerful setup sweepers, with the former assisting Bug-type teams by taking out troublesome Steel-types that are unfavorable for Araquanid and Kleavor, such as Skarmory and Corviknight. On the other hand, Frosmoth can reliably deal with Ground-type Pokemon that act as a stopgap to Volcarona's sweeping potential, such as Clodsire and offensive Garchomp, after a Quiver Dance boost. Additionally, Frosmoth gains a significant boost in its ability to take Electric-type attacks that threaten Araquanid from foes such as Raging Bolt and Iron Valiant, thanks to its ability Ice Scales. In return, Araquanid, as well as Kleavor, help deal with Heatran, which can render both Volcarona and Frosmoth useless. Lastly, Scizor is another setup sweeper that is appreciated by Araquanid, as it is capable of handling setup sweepers that can wall Araquanid, such as Dragapult and Primarina, with its Technician-boosted Bullet Punch in tandem with Swords Dance.
