Introduction
DLC2 released half a week ago and I’ve been having fun building in the tier. So many unique teambuilding options this time around, but I would like to focus on my favorite mon to build, the funny long necc Raikou. With fantastic bulk, SpA, and access to Calm Mind + Electric Sucker Punch, Raging Bolt can provide teams with a wincon that can also break and be used as speed control. With this, I went into the builder and constructed a team utilizing it.
Le Squad
Ray Romano (Great Tusk) @ Leftovers
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 HP / 204 Def / 52 Spe
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- Knock Off
- Ice Spinner
- Rapid Spin
Every team that isn’t Boots spam or HO needs a spinner or more specifically, a Great Tusk. For my team, I went with the classic Physically Defensive set. The reason for this is because of mons like Gfire and SD Blaziken could prove to be problematic. With Knock + Ice Spinner, I could force progress while keeping hazards out. Tera Water is necessary to actually check the aforementioned Blaziken and Gfire. So if you run into those matchups, preserve your Tera.
Morgana (Meowscarada) (M) @ Choice Band
Ability: Protean
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Flower Trick
- Knock Off
- Triple Axel
- U-turn
CB Meow acts as this team’s main wallbreaker and progress maker. I’ve talked about this set before, but TL;DR, Meowscarada is fantastic at breaking defensive cores due to Knock + T-Axel. Strong enough to 2HKO/OHKO Knock absorbers like Clef, Gliscor, and even Skarm, it has an excellent matchup into the Skarm/Ting-Lu/Glowking Boots Span teams. T-Axel is also especially useful for flipping the matchup against Kyurem and snipping Serperior from its Sub. Even in the worst case scenario where it doesn’t break anything, Protean U-Turns can both keep up the momentum and get a feel on what the opponent likes to switch into vs Meow.
Odin (Raging Bolt) @ Leftovers
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 56 HP / 140 Def / 252 SpA / 60 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draco Meteor
- Thunderclap
- Discharge
- Calm Mind
The MVP of the team. Raging Bolt acts as a secondary wallbreaker, but also a wincon and a form of speed control with CM + Thunderclap. The Dragon typing synergizes with the team very well, providing the team with a bulky water resist. Originally the spread was 56 HP/200DFSE/252SPA, but I added some additional speed EVs to get the jump on max speed Adamant Gambit. Even with less defense investment, Raging Bolt can tank physical hits, even Headlong Rushes/EQs from non-offensive Tusks. Calm Mind basically lets this thing 1v1 almost every special attacker in the tier, even tanking Dracos and Moonblasts after +1. At +1, Draco OHKOs specially defensive Gliscor if it decides to switch into rocks. If not, it has a 31% chance to kill.
+1 252+ SpA Raging Bolt Draco Meteor vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Gliscor: 315-372 (88.9 - 105%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
Due to the nature of moves like Draco, Skeledirge is forced to Tera Fairy or get 2HKOd by Draco.
Meanwhile Thunderclap snipes faster targets like Darkrai, Deo-S, Enamorus, and rain sweepers, making it valuable in the mid game and late game. Tera Fairy lets it flip the matchup vs opposing Dragons, which is important for the Kyurem matchup.
OG Spike Machine (Skarmory) (M) @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Sturdy
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 HP / 248 Def / 8 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Spikes
- Body Press
- Roost
- Whirlwind
The team’s premiere physical wall/ground immune/spike setter. We all know what it does for the team. 8 speed EVs let it get the jump on opposing Skarmory out-phaze them. It will serve as the team’s main check to Gambit, Roaring Moon, and Rilla. Tera Water is useful in case Tusk dies early and a check to Blaziken/Gfire is necessary. Alternatively Iron Defense could be run to be more potent at checking physical threats.
Ferrothorn (Ting-Lu) @ Leftovers
Ability: Vessel of Ruin
Tera Type: Water/Steel/Fairy/Ghost
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Whirlwind
- Ruination
Ting-Lu is our team’s dark/ghost resist, SR setter, and special wall. Synergizes with Skarmory to form a hazard/defensive core and hold off Kingambit. It will also be our main counterplay to Deo-S and Darkrai. You could choice four of these Teras depending on what you feel less comfortable against. Tera Ghost to spinblock, Tera Fairy for the Kyurem matchup, Tera Steel which does the same but you don’t die to Ghold, and in case you don’t have enough water in your life, Tera Water, for Walking Wake.
Brittney Spears (Slowking-Galar) (F) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Regenerator
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 248 HP / 8 SpA / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Future Sight
- Chilly Reception
- Toxic
- Sludge Bomb
The team’s defensive pivot and the piece to complete the typical Ting-Lu/Bird core. Glowking will be our main answer to weather and Volcarona. The key is Toxic which lets Glowking properly cripple these threats while punishing Ting-Lu. Tera Water is for, you guessed it, Walking Wake. Alternatively you could replace Future Sight for Flamethrower or Ice Beam to not be a sitting duck vs Steels or Gliscor.
Main Threats
Usage Tips
-Against Sun, don’t led with Glowking. Alot of players will expect you to try to change the weather and lead off with Tusk or Roaring Moon. Instead, lead off with Meow or Skarm.
-Make sure you Knock Skarm’s Rocky Helmet before going off with CB T-Axels. An easy way to do this is with Great Tusk.
-If you lead with Meow and click T-Axel vs a Gliscor team. They’ll most likely Protect and then go into Skarm/Mola. That is when you double-switch into Raging Bolt and click CM to break a hole.
-Preserve your Raging Bolt unless an opportunity to rkill or break arises.
-Since the team does not have any offensive Tera users, you should utilize it defensively to patch a possibly bad matchup like Gouging Fire or Kyurem.
-Do not be afraid to go into Raging Bolt vs Zama. Its bulky enough to tank a hit or two and threaten back. Plus you could wall it completely with Tera Fairy because its too hefty for Heavy Slam to do meaningful damage. To repeat the previous tip, don’t be afraid to Tera defensively.
