(Little) Things that annoy you in Pokémon

It’s sorta annoying we dont see more NPC trainers or even Rivals use HM moves on their teams. It’s a cool immersive thing. You would see them in more of a situation like yours, traveling the region and using their own Pokemon to do so

Just something I’d like to see more of

Well, 1) HMs have been basically dead for 5 years now, and 2) aside from Surf, Waterfall, Fly, and arguably Strength they're all terrible moves.

Yh I mean if they ever come back it would be cool, but I think its reasonable to have wanted it in the games they did appear in. Also your second point didnt stop them from having terrible moves otherwise, why not throw on a random rock smash or dive here and there

Damn right. If Vermilion City's Gym Trainers has Cut on their moveset, that's some good environmental storytelling right there.

I'm pretty sure in ORAS you can encounter Surfing Ace Trainers who don't have a Surf user in their party, which always struck me as odd. But then maybe not all NPCs use their whole party against you.

Surf did see rare usage here & there. I always remember going "whoa what, surf?!" when it happened to me, although it is rare.

vanilla NPC trainers are more or less off the table because they don't have specific movesets applied to them in most instances.

There's a Tuber in Route 109 in Emerald that uses a Zigzagoon with Surf. It's the only instance of a completely random trainer using a HM that I can remember.

If we broaden the scope to regular TMs there's some trainers in Wattson's gym that have Shock Wave (the TM Wattson gives after defeating him). I know for a fact the Youngster has it on his Zigzagoon and there's two trainers with Volbeat and Illumise that have it too.

Sun/Moon the trainers who give you Surf and Waterfall use those moves in combat. Of course, that's the gen that made them regular TMs.

Now that it's been brought up, yeah, it's weird. Why are you surfing around fighting Swimmers that use Bubble Beam? Or at least, if they're going to randomly give you an HM, have you get it by fighting someone whose team uses that HM. SOMETHING. I'm not saying you should fight someone on Victory Road who has an underleveled Wailord with 4 HM moves as his last mon, but that would make the world feel more real and also be really funny.

Just remembered the existence of a Sailor in Emerald (IIRC he's on the final stretch of those fast-current routes between Pacificidlog and Slateport)
who, after you defeat him, says "Great, now I've no way to get off this island... actually that's not true. I know that a fainted Pokemon can Surf, but it just feels wrong." Wonder if he actually has a Surf user in his party, though.

Pretty sure he doesn't. There's a similar bit of dialogue in FRLG where a Bird Keeper on an island east of Cinnabar says something like "My birds are exhausted. They can't Fly me back!" after being defeated, but none of his Pokemon know Fly and he's actively contradicting what the player is told about fainted Pokemon using HMs. Guess battling against the player is just uniquely brutal haha.

Ok so what I'm gathering is that the gym trainers are trapped inside the Vermilion Gym with an ex-soldier who is characterised as both a) constantly raring to fight, often using pretty intense war analogies in his dialogue, and b) extremely cautious, perhaps even to the point of paranoia. Cool cool, seems chill.

(He's chilled out in later gens, but in RBY especially he's all like "THIS IS WAR, CIVILIAN, AND I'M GOING TO ELECTROCUTE YOU UNTIL YOU SUBMIT")

>:^( this isn't a pokemon exclusive thing but I'm tired of frog mons where their emphasis is the tongue. Ik pop culture frogs have chameleon tongues but they dont't work like that!!! they're not that long!!! they're just set up like catapults!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Main reason I hate greninja. You're a sham of a frog
I wanna see more visual variety for that matter. Most Frog Pokemon are either abstracted to humanoid looks like Poliwrath line, or they tend to adhere to the "long lanky limbs and hop around" look that is common in pop-culture. Give me some Rain-Frogs, man.

Sword's logo is off-center. It's not a huge deal but it bothers me.

Something that annoys me a bit about name structures in a certain Gen VIII line.

Hatenna, Hattrem, Hatterene. Why does Hatenna have one T and the others have two?

Because "antenna" only has one t.

Words with more than one set of double consonants are rare in English. "Hattenna" doesn't work for this reason. Visually it looks wrong and from a pronunciation point of view it looks like it should be pronounced Hat-t-tenna rather than Hat-enna.

On the flip side, "Hatrem" and "Haterene" don't work either because by rights they should be pronounced "hate-rem" and "hate-er-een". Thus, double T for Hattrem and Hatterene but not for Hatenna.
