Welcome to the THIRD run of the SS Ubers VR!

Here is where we aim to rank all the Pokemon by order of viability in the SS Ubers metagame.

Thread Rules

- Post intelligently. One line only posts saying things like "X should be X rank" without context or supporting evidence are likely to be disregarded or deleted.
- Be civil when debating with other users. Any flaming will not be tolerated!
- This thread is for discussion of the viability rankings only. Simple questions about why something is ranked or how to build a team should look to our SQSA or our various resources outlined in the Forum Guide.
- Be aware of our subforum rules and global forum rules, they naturally apply here too!

The VR Council

The VR Council is a collective of users given the privilege to assess any new nominations from the community and vote on them before they become accepted into the rankings. The same council also has a similar privilege in our Sample Teams thread. The VR Council is also able to internally nominate changes to the thread where it will be voted on just like a community user's vote. Changes to the Viability Rankings will usually be documented in the form of updates, where votes and associated reasoning are collected in a spreadsheet, so keep an eye out for update posts! Rankings

The S and A ranks are ordered by order of their viability as determined by the community and council. We opt for this in the Ubers VRs due to the centralized nature of the tier leading to more obvious gaps in how good something is. B rank and below are still listed alphabetically, to avoid excessive nitpicking and less interesting discussions.

Each Pokemon will have their Strategy Dex entry hyperlinked as they go up on site. When its early in the generation and/or there are new additions to the VR it will likely take extra time to have their site entry available.

We're back... again! With the recent suspect concluded and UPL well underway developing the SS metagame, we felt it was finally time to bring back the VR. There's been a couple changes to the VR council between the threads, as Hack and Goat Heart have left making way for Skysolo to return!

As we have unfortunately had to do a few times by now due to the constant DLC and metagame shifting, we all opted to make our personal VRs for the Isle of Armor metagame and average the results to make the OP. As UPL is ongoing and everyone in the council is involved in the tournament keeping us busy, I left the reasoning behind everyone's rankings as an optional thing to do. You can find all the details behind the new OP noted in the sheet. If you are clamoring for details on the meta and how things are used we will be restarting Ubers C&C very soon, so keep an eye out for that... and maybe even join us there!

The next update can be expected after UPL's conclusion, which will include new community nominations made from here on out.

Volcarona has a great offensive presence with Quiver Dance and the item Heavy-Duty Boots allowing it ti come on hazards. The reason why it excels in Ubers is the ability to dynamax which allows it to hit incredibly hard by +1. Its able to dent through mons that would in theory check it, such as Chansey, Blissey, Tyranitar, toxapex all have the ability to get 2hkoed or ohkoed in some instances.
 
How does something nu like quagsire suddenly become a huge threat in ubers (better than necrozma dm!)?

Unaware lets it negate stat boosts from setup or dynamax sweepers (marshadow, dd dragupult, zacian, volcarona), and it’s typing allows it to resist volcarona lacking giga drain.

So quagsire isn’t allowed unaware in nu? Am I missing something here?

Quagsire’s allowed unaware in nu, it’s just that it’s good at countering zacian and other setup sweepers in ubers, and can take physical hits. (+1 252+ Atk Zacian-Crowned Play Rough vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Unaware Quagsire: 159-187 (40.3 - 47.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery)

It is not antimeta, in the opposite, it happened to be one of the closest counter to Zacian which has been on the top with Eternatus since the beggining of SS. It being rank A indicates how much the utility has been going for it despite being NU, which just indicates it is not used as much in OU and down. Ubers is a different meta.

Similarly, it was also used in previous gens to counter some physical sweepers but wasn’t used as much as now because it wasn’t « the best » answer to one of the major threats. Here it counters one of the two S ranked mon, it’s enough to justify the high ranking

CHARIZARD B- to B

Charizard really deserves to rise. Sun is soo under appreciated in this meta which is so full of steels with zacian, necrozma being so good and zard dosent care about fat blobs because:

252 SpA Solar Power Charizard-Gmax G-Max Wildfire vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Eviolite Chansey in Sun: 289-342 (41.1 - 48.6%) -- 98.8% chance to 2HKO after Wildfire damage
And
252 SpA Solar Power Charizard-Gmax G-Max Wildfire vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Toxapex in Sun: 127-150 (41.7 - 49.3%) -- 66.8% chance to 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery and Wildfire damage

And thats without life orb . Personally I don't think it needs lo but its definitely worth running . Hdb lets it comes in on sr which I think is generally better. Gmax wildfire is ridiculously broken, the impact of doing 16% to almost everything cannot be overstated. It also has access to the most broken max move that is max airstream which does airstream things, letting it outspeed almost everything in this meta and it's speed tier is good enough for such a powerful wallbreaker as it gets the jump on stuff like darm and lunala . It can end games on the spot once gets to +1 speed .It's an excellent early game wallbreaker and it will always leave a significant dent in the opponent letting stuff like zacian sweep late game. It can also rip apart stall like little else due to its sheer power .It also has a good movepool with stuff like dragon pulse and focus blast being very good coverage options. Ttar really dosent want to take max knuckle to the face even in sand.


Sun is also generally good as it allows stuff like eternatus to ko zac with flamethrower and also lets zac dumpster it's best switchin, quagsire with solar blade . Duggy also provides valuable support by straight up eliminating fat mons . It can also eliminate ttar if it doesn't have shed shell. Torkoal has some great defensive utility with is monstrous defence stat as it's able to wall zacian ,mashadow and other physical attackers and it can't be used as setup fodder due to access to yawn which can also force a lot of switches. It can also kill ttar with a body press on the switch.

Necrozma-DM to A+

I feel Necrozma's role compression and ease of use warrent it rising to A+. It's defensive set is a fantastic Eternatus check that doesnt freely invite in Zacian-C, and also has offensive sets to choose from with SD/DD/DoubleDance/Trick Room that make it very easy to use on all team styles, and it seems a clear cut above the rest of the A pack, where the likes of Blissey and Exca dont have close to the same flexibility, role compression, and dont fit on as many styles of team.

Mewtwo to A-
Stalltwo is fantastic, and both nasty plot and all out attacker destroy the things that want to take on stalltwo. Seeing it in the same category as Reshiram is very weird. Comparing it to the existing A- pokemon I think it compares pretty favourably with them, with it capable of crippling it's checks with Wisp to help some of its teammates or just blowing straight past some of them with a +2 coverage move, it just wishes it could have an extra moveslot as it cant quite cover everything with just 3 attacking moves.
 
Alolan Marowak to C

I think Alolan Marowak has a real niche on Trick Room teams due to its ability to capitalize on Lunala's Teleports and 2HKO nearly all of the meta with Poltergeist. Its naturally decent defense in conjunction with its strong defensive typing and perhaps even Lightningrod means that if it is brought in under the right circumstance sit can guarantee a kill or potentially set up a Substitute or Swords Dance. Moreover, its Fire typing lets it absorb Mewtwo's Will-o-Wisps, live a Psychic, and kill back with Poltergeist. Its stab coverage alone lets it deal with most of the Pokemon near the top of the viability rankings.
