Welcome to the eleventh installment of the RarelyUsed Premier League! With a lot of new faces this time, as well as some old veterans returning, we are going to see who is going to take the crown home and who is going to be left in the dust as the weeks go by. As in any other team tour, an attempt was made to create an unbiased list of expected players for each tier played in RUPL by asking knowledgeable players to rank the new and old generation players in each respective formats, as well as showing their records in past tournaments. The rankings were then averaged by each individual vote, resulting in what we hope looks like a mostly impartial list. This is all to bring hype and some sort of entertainment around the tournament—if your team or yourself was ranked lower, don't feel discouraged, show them on the battlefield who is the best, and take the victory home!

A big thank you to the people who helped with the rankings and creation of this article: Ajna, Ampha, Attribute, avarice, Beraldo, BluBirD, Bouff, cyanize, Danny, Denial, dunoks, eifo, etern, EviGaro, Expulso, Feaniix, feen, Feliburn, FlamingoPokéman, Floss, GoldCat, Gondra, Guille, ishtar, Leni, Lily, Lime, LpZ, Lyssa, Mac3, MAHOH, Metallica126, mncmt, ninjadog, Oathkeeper, odr, Piyush25, Punny, Qwily, robjr, Santu, sensei axew, Star, THE_CHUNGLER, TheFranklin, TsuShirogane, umbry, xXcrossbowXx.

An even bigger thanks to the people who helped with the writing, HTML, GP and QC checks, and much more: Ampha, Beraldo, cyanize, Denial, Expulso, Feliburn, GoldCat, Lily, Lumari, and Stories.

Tenacious Technicians

Tenacious Technicians

Floss is back to managing after a great run last RUPL, but this time he figured he would cheat and co-manage with TheFranklin, so they could both self-buy. This is unarguably one of the best starts a manager could ask for, as both of them have had incredible results in and outside of the tier; however, they were obviously both quite expensive, so the rest of the lineup might be subpar because of that, right? Their SV core is rounded out nicely by ishtar and zS, who with the help of their two managers and bench should have next to no struggles. QWILY is a great tournament player who has been incredibly active in the generation and has a decent track record in RU Team Tours, getting average results but never going negative. In SM we have odr, who's one of the best players to draft for this pool. Floss and Franklin are both inexperienced with SM, so going for a player as good and self-sufficient as odr for their last expensive buy only makes sense. For ORAS we have etern, who's been for quite a well in RU team tours now and is expected to do well as he usually does. To round up the starting lineup, there is BlazingDark, who we don't have much info on when looking at just RU; however, he's been an uprising tournament player for a while now, so we'll have to see if he'll be able to transfer his skills to BW RU. Last but not least, PokémonCestDur, btboy, and Astrø form the bench, who are all-around good players and cover support for pretty much every generation in the tour. Overall, the team does not really appear to have any glaring issues; they're easily one of the best teams in the tour, and it would be less than surprising to see Floss pull off another great season managing.

Deranged Hustlers

Deranged Hustlers

Defending champion Beraldo and his trusty sidekick Siras return to manage the Deranged Hustlers, who are considered a strong contender to repeat their championship run from RUPL X. With a great mix of personalities, strong players in the majority of the slots (especially those Beraldo can't support), and a very talented manager, the Hustlers won't be an easy team to defeat. Starting in SV, Beraldo brought in his Brazilian friends Thiago Nunes and LpZ along with his UUPL teammate Lime. Thiago Nunes has quickly become one of the biggest names in lower tiers, going for tons of money in basically every lower tier PL except UU; the Hustlers' retain likely saved them some cash. He recently finished top 4 in the Official Smogon Tournament, a tour with over 1,000 signups, to show his general tournament prowess. Rumors have it that LpZ is signed up for over twenty tours at the moment, an insane “accomplishment” that could lead to either a mental breakdown or the Hustlers getting one of the most dedicated players ever. But in one of the most high-profile of those tours, UUPL, he just went 7-0. While this was in a different generation, Diamond and Pearl, he has shown plenty of skill at SV RU specifically by making it to the top 6 of the most recent SV RU Seasonal. Their teammate Lime is in the top 4 of that seasonal; although he may miss up to two weeks of the tour, he's an even more dedicated RU player than the other two and will be heavily invested in the tour the remainder of the time. They're supported by RU Discord chatter FlamingoPokéman. Metallica enters with a lot more question marks; little is known about this player besides that he's from China, qualified for RULT, and has never played more than four games in a RU team tour. Even with Beraldo's support, it's hard to have much confidence in a slot that will depend solely on Metallica and perhaps toinha. Santu inspires much more confidence, as one of the most talented players in the tour. DugZa, a fellow OST semifinalist, is quite talented as well. However, the Hustlers' old generations suffer from a lack of team support. Santu doesn't build his own teams and needs them provided, and DugZa seems unlikely to build them in ORAS RU. In a seven-week tour with possibly two to four more weeks of playoff games, getting enough SM and ORAS teams for Santu, Dugza, and Beraldo's SM games in the Bo3 slot could be a persistent thorn in the Hustlers' side. In BW, Guille won't have these problems; he's one of the most passionate BW RU players around and has amassed great results there. While he's considered middle of the pack, one more successful tour could push him into BW elite territory. Finally, Beraldo himself occupies the Bo3 slot. With the amount of invested SV RUers on their team, he should have elite team support there, and Beraldo is one of the absolute best SS RU players around. Even though SM could theoretically be an issue, he went 5-1 in last year's Bo3 pool, which included SM. He also drafted GSC UU player FV13 to round out the bench. Overall, the Hustlers are an excellent team with few holes; the most likely cause of their defeat would be underperformance in the oldgens, but that's not particularly likely.

Noble Guardians

Noble Guardians

Lyssa takes a shot at managing an RUPL for the first time ever, paired with the RU veteran Punny. They went with the most expected draft from them, as we see a lot of familiar faces from their usual group, which is more centered around the UU community. Their SV core is led by the team's retain, umbry, who usually puts in competent records in RUPL (and overall) with a respectable 18-8 all-time. The core is rounded up by hariyana grande, who is looking to improve on a less-than-desirable last RUPL, and Cielau, who is trying to make a stand after qualifying for the gruesome RU ladder tour. Mashing will look to sub in for the team if there are some poor performances, but her main skill is being a good support slot as seen in the latest SCL. None of the members of this team are known active builders, so Mashing will be key in providing ideas for them. The other sub slot is Alpha1013, who is more of a question mark historically with no real presence in actual Smogon tournaments but some scarce showing in outside forum tours. He'll have to really grind the tier to be able to bring value to the team, either as a sub slot or a builder. Their oldgens are really strong; Lily, Attribute and Gondra are all veterans at the game, and specifically in the generations they've been placed in. Gondra and Lily aren't really active builders in their gens, so they'll rely more on Punny providing teams, while Attribute does try to build new teams for his games each week, which can put him ahead of some of the other slots in terms of matchups. Piyush recently took a shot at ORAS RU in ORASPL and did decently, but the level of competition there does not match RUPL's, so he'll have to adapt his game and learn all the interactions needed to nab a few wins for his team. His RoAPL win and SCL trophy are good indicators of the ability to adapt, though. Punny finishes the starting lineup in the best of 3 slot, which he historically does well in. In such a strong RUPL, the Guardians are posed to perform well, which can mainly be attributed to their players' quality, but the question stands on how much they'll be able to figure out SV RU with no real builders, as it's 4 slots of the 8 played each week.

Crunchwrap Supreme Overlord Juniors

Crunchwrap Supreme Overlord Juniors

After missing the last RUPL, Expulso and mncmt now return for another season, leading the new Crunchwrap Supreme Overlord Juniors franchise. Some people might say the team is the reflection of the managers, and mncmt's self-buy is a great example of this saying, since he is a solid tour player name despite not having played RU too much, just like plenty of other names in this team. He's a solid player, but the expectations for him in the bo3 slot don't seem to be high. The SV core is filled with not one, not two, but three players playing their first-ever RUPL. hellom is an OU player who has obliterated this year's SPL with a crazy 10-1 record, and Fogbound Lake is another tournament player who has had good performances in the past even though he is not doing as great this year. Alongside these two, we have hjkhj, an RU ladder hero who has been around for a while but has never had the chance to play in RUPL and now has the difficult task of being the only RU player in the SV core, which might lead to doubt if he can properly support his teammates and still pull up a good record himself. However, manager Expulso will probably help the team solve the ninth generation, despite his lack of experience in it. In SS, we have the Chef. Kushalos is finally back for another RUPL season, and the expectations for his return are high in a tier that he has never touched, which shows how much of a strong player he is. Denial, formerly known as Lunala, fills the SM slot to make the Crunchwraps lineup even stronger, and it would not be an exaggeration to say she is one of the main characters of the team with her solid all-time record. However, not only has she shown that she is a solid player, her support is also very valuable due to her experience playing RU across the years, mainly for the SS slot, since Kushalos has little to no experience playing that tier. All-rounder Avarice comes in ORAS for another RUPL season. Last year he played BW and ended up with a neutral record, and the expectations for him this year seem to be about the same. His capacity to play anything he's slotted into at a solid level might be very well appreciated by his team. Finalizing the starting lineup, we have veteran BW player ninjadog, who finds himself at the top of the BW pool, this year without Finchinator. The bench is filled with Yay, a Brazilian player who is not that active currently but still has the knowledge that is needed to support his team, mainly in SM and BW; and olivebranch, a Random Battles player who might be this team's secret weapon, but nobody knows. The Crunchwrap Supreme Overlord Juniors have a solid but also wild lineup with some big question marks, but if their bets work, Expulso might once again lead his team into a successful season.

Bulletproof Bombers

Bulletproof Bombers

Feliburn and Ajna's long con to pricefix themselves by winning no more than three games each in RUPL X may not have paid off; despite the excellent start from having two of the best RU players of all time on your roster at a reasonable price, they only found their way to fifth place in the Power Rankings. Of course, they're not aiming to do well in the PRs; they're trying to win the tour. So, let's see how they stack up. Their SV core of blunder, MAHOH, and tko is interesting primarily due to the addition of MAHOH, a former Other Metagames player who has shown extremely impressive ability to adapt to new metagames after two dominant UUPL performances. The very talented blunder and RU veteran tko fill in the other two slots. They got a savvy bench pickup in temp, who is currently top 4 in RU Seasonal, to help supply all these players with teams prior to Week 1 of the tour. Known tryhard Taka may be able to pick up the tier as well, though it's unknown how much experience he has in this tier currently. SS is held down by Meru, a steady pilot who will have the support of his former SCL teammate Feliburn. Look for him to outperform both his sixth place ranking and his 5k price versus a fairly inexperienced pool. ima enthusiastically joins the team in SM, a tier he and the rest of the “Rurk” staples like Ajna and Feli love. ORAS is held down by Ajna himself, who enters as the undisputed strongest player, surpassing even Chaitanya's unbelievable 36-12. BW is surprisingly occupied by lax, who played every single other tier—ORAS, SM, SS, and SV—during his 2-7 campaign last RUPL. Perhaps the change of scenery wil help, but with little BW support on the team, this appears to be a dangerous move despite lax's skills as a player. Feliburn completes the team at Bo3, and his roughly 20K manager buy saved the team roughly 10K credits at auction. Feli's results haven't quite borne out that sky-high price; his only exceptional RU subforum tour since 2020 has been the 2022 RUPL in which he went 6-1, although he has also never flopped. Expect him to finish around the middle of a very strong pool while providing great support across the board. When analyzing the team's parts separately, they all seem strong enough to do well, although it comes with some question marks, particularly in BW. However, it is important to note that “Jerk” teams like this have often lost motivation in Smogon's subforum PLs. If they can stay motivated and play to their potential, they will have a very good chance to make playoffs or better. However, the path to playoffs will be difficult and demand their full attention—along with the full efforts of the builders expected to carry at least two SV slots that don't really build. There's little doubt that Feliburn and Ajna, two of the best RU players of all time, can do this; the only question is whether they will.

Toxic Chains

The Toxic Chains

EviGaro and Oathkeeper are back to manage another new franchise, the Toxic Chains. Our beloved tier leader EviGaro decided to self-buy and will start playing Bo3, the toughest pool of the tournament. She has already proven that her skills shouldn't be undervalued, since she has been a high-level player for some years. However, as already stated, the Bo3 pool is the most stacked of the tournament, and EviGaro finds herself in the last spot of the rankings. She will need to show people that she is strong enough to compete even in the strongest pool, and her experience will help with this. The Toxic Chains invested heavily in their SV core, with xavgb as their superstar player. Even though xavgb has never played an RU team tournament, it's not surprising to see him being ranked among the top-tier players, since he is one of the best players around currently. The core is followed by feen, an experienced player who is coming back after a long hiatus and has been playing plenty of tournaments during the last few months, including SCL. Despite Xiri having little to no experience with SV RU, he is still a competent player and shouldn't find trouble translating his skills to the current gen. This core will also receive help from EviGaro herself, Rarelyme, and eifo, which makes it even stronger. After being a manager last year, Mac3 is around for another RUPL, but this time as a player. He took a break since the prior RUPL and only came back recently, but this shouldn't stop him from successfully sweeping the SS pool, mainly with eifo helping him. In SM, xXcrossbowXx (please change this nickname omg) will try to solidify his name even more in the tier. This year he will count on the support of his managers EviGaro and Oathkeeper and teammates Xiri and eifo. Hopefully, they can help xXcrossbowXx with one of his main weaknesses, which is his teams' common lack of a Steel-type. RU mainstay eifo comes to fill the ORAS slot. Although he is one of the best RU players, he doesn't seem to be in his best mental state, which might be risky for the team environment. However, eifo is still a competent and respectable player who has the skill to win against anyone. In BW, there is devin, an OU tournament player. Expectations for him are low, but maybe eifo's support and experience will be enough to make him perform better than expected. The sub-slots of the team are filled by Room Owner Rarelyme, a newcomer who has been showing that he is very good at running projects but still sees a big question mark if he is as good when it comes to the game; and TyCarter, a versatile player who will be helpful if his help is needed. The Toxic Chains has a solid lineup, but only the future has the answer if this will be enough to make EviGaro and Oathkeeper's season better than the last.

Rocky Mountains' Payloaders

Rocky Mountains' Payloaders

Returning franchise Payloaders, now led by GoldCat alone, comes to one more RUPL, this time willing to do better than last year - even though the rankers aren't optimistic about it. However, the winning team in the prior RUPL was also a team with only one manager, so if GoldCat can take this rough task and make it work, maybe his team can ride the RUPL's Rocky Mountain. The starting lineup begins with a huge challenge, since the Payloaders' SV core isn't expected to do well. Danny is the closest thing that they have to a star player, but his lack of stellar results in RU leads to doubt if he can take the responsibility and carry his teammates into playoffs. Even though Bouff has a lot of experience as a player, he lacks it in SV RU, and teammate THE_CHUNGLER is the perfect opposite—he has experience in the tier but not in tournaments. Maybe they can cover each other's weaknesses and surpass the low expectations, but it's not likely to happen. They will have support from manager GoldCat and newcomer Tsushirogane, which doesn't feel optimal either. However, the Payloaders' old gens is strong. Starting with SS, they got BluBirD, who seems to have found himself comfortable in the tier for the past year. His overall tournament experience in addition to his experience in the tier and GoldCat's support might lead him into a successful season. Moving to SM, Leni is also an experienced player who has proven that he can win against anyone, however, his lack of building capabilities will be an obstacle that GoldCat needs to help him surpass. In ORAS, the Payloaders will count on one of the best players of the tier, as well as one of the stars of this team. Chaitanya comes to one more RUPL, and despite his more recent negative performance in RUWC, there is no reason not to expect one more ORAS sweep from him. GoldCat himself covers the BW slot as one of the strongest players in the tier and certainly one of the people who have spent most time on it. In a pool without Finchinator, he finally has the chance to show people he is currently the number one BW RU player, but he might have trouble doing so. Finally, in Bo3, the Payloaders have their true star player: Star himself. The master is one of the strongest players in the whole tournament scene and has experience playing in essentially anything mons-related. Being one of the players with the highest wins number in the sheet, the expectation is that Star will pull up one more successful season, and his manager and teammates will help him in his journey. On the bench, Hurtadoo can easily move into SM if anything goes wrong with Leni and is likely going to be the one who will feed him with teams. TsuShirogane doesn't have a lot of experience in tournaments, but she is motivated, which is all that matters, and Suzuya can sub into any tier if the team ever needs it. Will GoldCat be able to do better than last year? The Rocky Mountains' Payloaders have their weaknesses, but they also have strong spots, so finding the balance between these might be the key for this team.

Iron Fisters

The Iron Fisters

Experienced manager Vulpix03 is managing in RUPL for the first time, alongside his friend 3d. After showing dominance last year, Vulpix decided not to self-buy and focus on only helping his players. Being the only team going into the auction without any player, the Iron Fisters started with a disadvantage, which is one of the main reasons this team ended up last in the Power Rankings. However, despite this placement, this team has some solid names, so there's room to surpass the expectations. The SV core is led by Master Chief, the current RU Ladder Tournament winner and the strongest player in the SV pool according to the rankers. With a good 17-8 record in the sheet and a lot of experience playing and managing, this year Master Chief has the goal to correspond to the expectations and solidify his name even more as one of the strongest names in current gen RU. Alongside the Chief, we have Mana, a tournament player who has shown interest in playing lower tiers recently as evidenced by his SV PU season in SCL, and atomicllamas, an RU veteran who is now coming back after a long hiatus. Even though they are both solid players, their lack of experience in SV RU made their ranking quite low, and it's up to them to prove that the rankers are wrong. Going into old gens, the Iron Fisters will count on dunoks as their SS player. His support is notably worse than last year, but dunoks knows how to win games as shown by his sheet record, so there's a good chance he will perform better than expected. In SM, cyanize finally gets to play their favorite tier in RUPL. Despite their low ranking, they have plenty of experience in the tier and are not someone other players should underestimate. Their help in SV will also be appreciated. Superstar robjr comes to play ORAS, the tier where he got most of his wins in the last RUPL. His experience will be important to succeed in a strong pool such as ORAS this year, and his team will need it if they want to make playoffs. If anything goes wrong in SM, SS, or bo3, robjr also plays them if necessary, which shows how important he will be for the Iron Fisters' season. Feaniix is known for being experienced in BW lower tiers and aims to repeat their last year's feat. However, Feaniix's inconsistency is a big factor that might lead them to an unsuccessful season. sensei axew is the last player in the starting lineup, but certainly not the least. He is one of the strongest RU players and has won the circuit once, in addition to his experience in the highest-level scenario. He will also receive support from Master Chief, Ampha, cyanize, Vulpix03, and others, which is very good for him. However, he finds himself in the strongest pool of the tournament and is also known for his low activity, so the rankers aren't optimistic about his season. The Iron Fisters spent a good amount of money on their bench, composed of Ampha, an active and solid sub who can play SV and SS; Ming549, a newcomer who has been active in SV and is known for his wild teams; Larry, a tournament player who can play anything at a solid level if needed; Clementine, an experienced SM and BW player and an interesting sub to have around if some things go wrong; and Stories, who hasn't been active but has shown in the past that they know how to play Pokémon. The Iron Fisters are ranked last, but they shouldn't be underestimated, and Vulpix03 is for sure going to use his experience as manager to show that his team can win against anyone.

1. feen (9): Chains

The Toxic Chains decided to invest heavily in current gen, spending 40k in total for all three names, and, according to the rankers, the decision paid off. xavgb gets ranked in the top 5 for his first RU team tournament, but his results outside of the tier speak for themselves. He's been constantly great in individuals and team tours, and with great support from feen and EviGaro, it's hard to imagine him doing worse than well. Talking about feen, while his RU Team Tour results have been underwhelming, after coming back from a long break he's been able to perform great in the latest RU Seasonals and qualified for the RU Ladder Tour. Xiri is what most people would call a classic “EviGaro pick,” being managed by her for most of his RUPLs. He's been consistently good in lower tiers, and thanks to the great synergy with Evi, he rounds up nicely for what is easily one of the best cores in the tour.

As part of the Brazilian Core™, ADV RU enthusiast LpZ finds himself ranked within the top 5, after a great 5-2 record in RUWC and a top 6 placement in the most recent RU Seasonal. Ranked nearly is the second part of the Brazilian Core™ Thiago Nunes, and while he hasn't had as good of a track record as LpZ in the tier, he's been a rising star in the tournament scene, so expectations are decently high. Following is Lime, who's starting in his first RU team tour. He just reached top 4 in the ongoing RU Seasonal, and with the support of manager Beraldo, this core is expected to do very well.

3. ishtar (18): Technicians

In Scarlet and Violet, Floss and Franklin's Technicians find themselves in third place primarily off the strength of manager Floss. Floss has finished positive in two consecutive SCL RU campaigns and boasts a blistering 13-5 record on the RU sheet. Especially with many of his SCL opponents lured away into Bo3, Floss is one of the strongest players in the SV pool and should put up another great record. ishtar and zS complete this core. ishtar, finally apart from her longtime companion Evi, is a self-sufficient RUer who seemed to build her own teams last RUPL as she finished 4-3. This slot likely has a low ceiling due to ishtar's relative lack of strength as an all-around player; she doesn't have particularly notable results in other tiers, for instance. However, it's definitely possible to expect a 4-3 or 3-4 finish and some super cool techs like the Disable Venomoth she infamously used to defeat lax last RUPL. It's rounded out by zS, whose 3k price reflects either a steal or an all-time low stock. Poor team tour performances like a 1-4 finish last RUPL and a 0-5 finish in PUBD, his most recent team tour, may have scared other managers away. However, he's played in SCL with decent results and had strong individual performances in circuit tournaments. Additionally, his RU team tour record is still positive despite that 1-4 finish; perhaps he can turn back the clock and repeat his 6-3 performance from 2022's RUPL. Overall, the rankers expect Floss to do great and zS and ishtar to clock in slightly below average, which may be all the team needs given their low price tags.

4. Fogbound Lake (16): Overlords

Expulso and mncmt decided to make a big bet and got an SV core with three players who haven't ever played RUPL, despite one being an RU mainer. After finishing SPL with a thunderous 10-1 record, hellom seems to be trying to translate his capabilities into lower tiers, since he is also playing in the current UUPL with a 2-1 record in SV. Even though he has never played a single RU team tournament, hellom might pull up a great record in his debut and start solidifying his name as an amazing player overall, not only in OU. The RU mainer of the core is hjkhj, who is known by the playerbase for his ladder achievements but not for his team tournament records, since he is only 2-2 on the sheet. In his RUPL debut, hjkhj finds himself in a big challenge, since he will be the main one responsible for the SV core of his team, and even though there are no doubts he is someone who needs to be respected, nobody knows if he can carry his teammates into a successful season. Last but not least, we have Fogbound Lake, who had good campaigns in last year's WCoP and SCL but didn't have the same success in this year's SPL. However, he has already proven that he can win games, which shouldn't be any different in RU. There is a big question mark about this core, since none of these players have any RUPL experience, and the rest of the team doesn't seem able to properly support them, but they have strong names on there, so this bet might be a hit instead of a miss.

5. atomicllamas (22): Fisters

The Iron Fisters SV core is led by Master Chief, who got ranked first thanks to his consistent results in the tier and recent win in the RU Ladder Tour. atomicllamas is another familiar face in the scene, participating and being involved within the tier for a very long time now, being even a tier leader at one point. While he has been out of the tournament scene for a while, he has the experience and has been laddering to catch up with the gen, so with some good support from Master Chief and the bench, he should be more than able to pull off a great performance. Last but not least is Mana, a great tournament player who has been around for a while but never played in an RU tournament. From the interview we know that he signed up after Vulpix, his own manager, specifically asked him to, so he's more than likely to show enough dedication and care to do great.

6. tko (19): Bombers

Rurk leader Ajna drafted some of his usual goons in blunder and tko while taking a chance on an intriguing new pick, MAHOH. As one of the most famous players of all time, blunder is well known to anyone who has ever touched competitive Pokémon. While he has played sparingly in recent years, he had a large role testing SV OU teams for the SPL champion Tyrants. This means his playing instincts are likely up to date despite some middling performances in the most recent WCoP and SCL. However, he's never been known for lower tiers, nor has he really seemed to like them. He'll be reliant on the support of Ajna, who has not touched SV RU since SCL, and Feliburn, who leads it. There are definitely worse situations to be in, but motivation may be some concern for both blunder and his managers. MAHOH is known as a UU sheet farmer after two highly successful UUPL campaigns, where he burst onto the scene after previously being known solely for Other Metagames. Will he replicate his success in RU? The rankers either think he will not or “aren't familiar with his game,” though this writer (who ranked him 5th) thinks he can outperform that ranking. Finally, tko takes the last slot. A Jerk staple, many commentators expected him to be placed in Black and White. He is able to pilot solidly and is often motivated on teams like this; however, with a poor record in RU tours historically and no recent results to go off of, expectations are low.

7. Cielau (24): Guardians

After a 25k retain on umbry, the Guardians had to go look for what is potentially some hidden talent to draft for cheap. hariyana has been playing for a while now, making a name for himself in UU and even getting to play in SCL; however, his previous RUPL experience wasn't as great, going 1-3. Cielau is instead a Monotype main whose only real RU result has been qualifying for the latest RU Ladder Tour. The core does have their saving grace in umbry, who's expected to pull yet another great RUPL performance after being retained for a huge amount of money. The team does also lack in support, with manager Punny being the main source and umbry potentially deciding to pick up the builder. The Guardians will have to hope for their SV gambit to work in order to stay afloat.

8. THE_CHUNGLER (23): Payloaders

While this core at first look doesn't appear to have any glaring issue, it pales in comparison when put side by side with any of the other SV cores. Danny and Bouff are both very hit-or-miss players, with sporadic activity in the tier but with the potential to pull a good season, while Chungler is participating in his first team tour ever, and starting on top of that. The core will have constant teambuilding support from TsuShirogane, GoldCat, and Chungler himself, so new and innovative builds may be able to elevate the core to pull a great performance.

1. Mac3 - Toxic Chains

After opting not to play in the last RUPL, Mac3 comes from his short retirement directly into the first spot of the SS pool. With an even 15-15 record in the all-time sheet, it might sound weird that Mac3 is ranked first—but the fact is that he has shown that he can perform very well in SS RU, crowned by his 5-2 season in SCL II. He was also one of the main reasons for BluBirD's recent success in the tier, showing that he's at least been keeping tabs on how the tier developed last year. Mac3 is also backed up by eifo, an SS RU enthusiast who won the RU Circuit when it was current gen, and EviGaro, which is more than enough support and guarantees that he will be able to make his ideas work during the season. Expectations are high, but Mac3 is every bit as strong as his first spot makes him look.

Avatar

2. Attribute - Noble Guardians

Despite having never played SS RU before last year, Attribute showed everyone that he could catch the flow of the tier quickly and proceeded to dominate the pool with a 6-2 record. He also has the support of Punny, who is one of the main names in the tier—so, solid teams won't be an issue in this slot. With an outstanding 15-2 record in the UU sheet added to his current 3-3 UUPL record, Attribute has shown that he knows how to win games in Pokémon, mainly in the eighth generation, so all we can do is wait to see if he will be able to continue his winning streak—and the rankers seem to believe that it won't stop here.

Avatar

3. Kushalos - Crunchwrap Supreme Overlord Juniors

In the third spot, we have the Chef himself. Despite not having played an RU team tournament since RUWC IV, Kushalos still has one of the best records in the RU sheet and is very experienced at playing RU tiers across the generations. Even though he has little to no experience with SS RU, he has already proven himself as a top player in the generation playing other tiers, and he will also have help from his manager Expulso and teammates Denial, formerly Lunala, and hjkhj. There is a big question mark if Kushalos can learn the tier in time to have a successful season, but the Chef is a high-caliber player who can dominate the pool if he wants to do so.

Avatar

4. BluBirD - Rocky Mountains' Payloaders

BluBirD went from a player that most of the rankers didn't have a lot of faith in to one of the strongest names in the tier. After an impressive 7-4 performance in SS RU during the last year, BluBirD is now led by GoldCat, who is also one of the strongest names in the tier and will be more than able to give proper support. Despite this, he still finds himself below the top 3… but he certainly has everything he needs to perform better than expected and solidify his name as a top pool player.

Avatar

5. QWILY - Tenacious Technicians

QWILY seems to be joining Attribute in the very short list of new SS lower tier players, having a solid SS UU performance this UUPL and now moving over to RU. His stock has risen in the past year or so after a run to top 8 of Smogon Tour in Smogon Tour 34. Here in lower tier land, he's bouncing between two strong support systems, going from SS UU Umbry to SS RU TheFranklin. He's finished exactly one win above average in every RU tour he's ever done, going 5-4, 4-3, 2-1, and 2-1. While this is impressive, his ceiling is probably capped around this point. Rankers expect slightly less, which is fair due to his lack of experience in the tier compared to most of the remaining players combined with lower sheer piloting skill than some inexperienced SS RUers like Attribute and Kushalos. Nonetheless, QWILY seems likely to have another solid season—and for the low price of 5.5k, Floss and Franklin would surely be happy with this.

Avatar

6. Meru - Bulletproof Bombers

In sixth place, we have Meru, who made his Smogon account when I was still in diapers. Despite this veteran's 26-29 sheet record not being incredible, Meru is experienced enough in the tier and has shown in the past that he can still beat strong players regardless of his grey hair. Meru will count on the help of RU mainstays Ajna and Feliburn, two of the best SS RU players, so he couldn't ask for anything better. Will this patriarch be able to fight the low expectations and prove that he can still pull up a good record? Only time can give us the answer, but time is Meru's biggest ally, so the answer might very well be yes.

Avatar

7. dunoks - Iron Fisters

Despite finishing last year with an overall 7-2 record in SS RU, dunoks finds himself yet again second to last in the RUPL power rankings. For some post hoc excuse, one can note that his 3-1 RUWC V record was against a significantly weaker pool with two of his wins coming from Ashbala alone. That leaves dunoks with a more modest 4-1. Whether or not dunoks replicates his success from last year largely depends on whether his team pulls through with the teambuilding support to go toe to toe with the builds of Mac3, Attribute, BluBirD, etc. Luckily, there's hope, as dunoks is in good company with Master Chief and Ampha on his team, who should provide him with solid enough teams.

8. Metallica126 - Deranged Hustlers

Metallica has been playing RU for a while now, joining most if not all of the circuit tournaments for the past few years, and is now on his way to his third RUPL, with this being the first as a full season starter. There is unfortunately not much else to say, as both in individuals and in team tournaments he hasn't really gotten any crazy results to his name. He was able to reach 8th place in the most recent RU Seasonal, but this is SS RU, and the pool is undeniably strong. It's going to be an uphill battle for Metallica, but there is definitely potential to see something great happen, especially thanks to the support of his manager Beraldo.

1. odr - Tenacious Technicians

With a solid 25-21 all-time performance, odr finds himself at the top of this strong pool after coming from a 3-2 record last RUPL. Even though odr is not as active as he used to be, he is still one of the strongest SM RU players on the site and certainly has shown it across the years. Being managed by TheFranklin and teaming up with ishtar means he will have enough support for his season, even though he can be self-sufficient. The expectations are high for him, but odr is a strong player and should be able to match it.

Avatar

2. Santu - Deranged Hustlers

Santu is arguably one of the best players in the whole tour. Not only known for his impressive results in the tournament scene, he's also the winner of the RU Invitational that went down a few years ago—all while playing from the losers bracket! He also boasts an impressive 24-11 record in the RU team tours sheet. However, the biggest concern is the lack of support; Hustlers manager Beraldo doesn't really play the tier, and there's not much support coming from the bench either. Even with all that said, if there were a player in the tour you would bet money on, it'd be him.

Avatar

3. Denial - Crunchwrap Supreme Overlord Juniors

Formerly Lunala, Denial has shown her incredible ability to have one of the worst name changes ever seen by humanity. However, Denial is backed up by an incredible 29-16 record, which shows that her Pokémon abilities are way better than her ability to choose names. Despite her ability to be self-sufficient, she also has the support of Brazilian player Yay, so we can be sure to expect good teams coming from this slot every week. As long as the name change didn't nerf her clicking capabilities, Denial should be one of the main names of her team and will be able to collect some important wins throughout the season.

Avatar

4. Gondra - Noble Guardians

At 4th place we have Gondra, who some people may be surprised to see so high—even over established mainers in the pool—but Gondra has a thoroughly impressive 29-18 record in the RU team tours sheet, achieved while primarily playing SM RU. And if support may come to someone's mind as a possible issue, he's backed up by his manager Punny, who will be more than able to support Gondra in loading good teams every week. This would lead one to believe in a very impressive run by Gondra, but in a strong pool like this there are still chances to see him struggle.

Avatar

5. ima - Bulletproof Bombers

Right under we find ima, who similarly to Gondra is an excellent player with amazing support from his managers—Ajna, who's managed him for many tours now such as the most recent RUWC that they won together, and Feliburn, who also has a solid grasp on the SM meta. However, his track record is nowhere near as impressive as Gondra's. With that said, it's hard to expect ima to actually do any worse than decent; however, with such a heavily stacked pool we'll only have to wait and see.

Avatar

6. xXcrossbowXx - Toxic Chains

Crossbow has shown consistent interest in this tier and has been playing it ever since it was current gen, so it's not surprising to see him come back for another run. He has also shown consistent results, with a great 9-2 run in 2022 overall, as well a decent 4-4 record even in a much deeper pool in RUPL X. Curiously, crossbow was also ranked 6th in the power rankings of that year—we'll see if he'll again be able to surpass expectations this time around.

Avatar

7. cyanize - Iron Fisters

cyanize is another SM RU enthusiast who finds themselves starting in RUPL in the tier for the first time. Unlike with crossbow, there's unfortunately not many results to speak of, as cyanize has always been supporting other players behind the scenes, and in a talented pool like this, they may struggle to keep up the pace. With Master Chief by their side, however, they'll be more than able to build the right team for any opponent they'll face.

Avatar

8. Leni - Rocky Mountains' Payloaders

In the last spot, we have Leni. This placement might give the idea he is not as good as the others, but thinking that way would be silly considering his 15-13 record. Leni is coming from an even 4-4 performance last RUPL, and he has shown that his SM capabilities are still in touch, since he got three wins in that pool last year. There is enough support for him from the names of GoldCat and Hurtadoo—crucial to his success, since Leni is not known for his building capabilities. The expectations are not high for him, but Leni has everything he needs to surpass them and prove that the rankers are wrong.

1. Ajna - Bulletproof Bombers

If Ajna is playing, he's obviously going to be ranked first. He's the best RU player period, with one of the best records in the RU team tours sheet and the most trophies in the Hall of Fame, without mentioning his amazing RU results in official team tournaments like SCL. He's also back playing one of his favorite tiers of all time, so there are no doubts that he'll do more than well.

Avatar

2. Chaitanya - Rocky Mountains' Payloaders

The only way Chaitanya was not going to be ranked first is if Ajna decided to play ORAS as well, which is exactly the case here. Chaitanya boasts the craziest record in the RU Team Tours sheet, with an incredible 36-12 playing mainly ORAS. At +24, he has the largest win/loss differential on the sheet despite playing 30-40 fewer games than lots of other users. His consistency within the tier is truly remarkable, and even with a strong pool like this year's, there are no indications or doubts that Chaitanya wouldn't do great. He has excelled against strong competition here before, and expecting anything other than a positive record would be lunacy.

Avatar

3. robjr - Iron Fisters

In the third spot, we have robjr, one of the strongest lower tier names coming from a hot 6-2 record in the last RUPL, where most of his wins were in ORAS. This year he will have help from experienced players Master Chief and atomicllamas to try to repeat his strong performance in the ORAS pool from the previous year. Being one of the main characters of the Iron Fisters, robjr will need to show that he can perform well in a pool with some great names, but he is an experienced player who has played in the highest-level scenarios of this game, so there is no reason to doubt him.

Avatar

4. DugZa - Deranged Hustlers

DugZa signed up almost exclusively for ORAS this RUPL. His most recent ORAS RU experience was going 4-1 in ORAS in RUPL IX two years ago; since then, he played SV RU last RUPL and ORAS NU in the most recent ORASPL. He put most other tiers in “Tiers Not Played,” indicating a strong commitment to this tier that is surprising given his relative lack of history there. DugZa is a good player, and his commitment to ORAS could lead him to build in a tier that has a reputation for hostility to new teams. He may need this commitment, in fact, because the team doesn't seem to have much ORAS support. Santu has played it before but might not have access to those teams. While not as decorated as the top two, DugZa is an intriguing new face to the ORAS RU scene that at his best could go toe to toe with anyone in the pool. Time will tell if his passion for this new tier holds up over a seven-week regular season.

Avatar

5. etern - Tenacious Technicians

Perhaps reluctantly, etern slots into ORAS RU for this tour. He's played SM and BW RU in the past but got bumped out of those slots by odr and either BlazingDark or a distaste of the RNG madhouse that is BW RU. He's a solid pilot who has been consistent in subforum team tours for at least six or seven years now. However, etern does not have any ORAS RU experience and won't have much support in ORAS RU either. His teammates TheFranklin and QWILY have touched the tier in the past, but they likely haven't had access to the massive team dumps by top players that define the stale ORAS metagame. In such a stagnant tier, support makes a lot of difference, particularly since etern may not be active enough to build for this tour.

Avatar

6. eifo - Toxic Chains

Banning Tera isn't possible, so eifo decided to do the next best thing and migrate to ORAS RU for the season. He's an RU allrounder, with experience in every single gen of RU and lots of motivation for RUPL, his biggest tournament. I would guess he has more experience in SM and BW, but he's no stranger to ORAS RU either. However, he's been held back by a few mental factors, most notably nerves and tilting. With lots of RU tours under his belt, along with signing up for basically every circuit tour in Smogon University's course catalog, these nerves may have faded some. This does come with a risk that eifo struggles to fit his prep in between a PhD dissertation, DPP NU Cup, and GSC OU Seasonal. These external factors may have influenced eifo's low ranking here: if he keeps his head down and just plays his best game every week, he should be able to have a solid tour.

Avatar

7. avarice - Crunchwrap Supreme Overlord Juniors

avarice is one of, if not the, most versatile players in the entire Smogon userbase. He is capable of playing any tier he is slotted into and has shown that he can also collect wins with his solid 8-7 record in the RU sheet. However, ORAS RU has a strong pool this year, and the fact that avarice has never had a spectacular record in RU team tournaments added to his team not having proper support in this tier means the rankers don't have a lot of faith in him. Will avarice be able to turn the low expectations around and prove that he can overperform in this pool? It will be interesting to see if his offensive playstyle will be enough in the RegiMolaVenu tier.

Avatar

8. Piyush25 - Noble Guardians

Piyush is already familiar with the tier, having played it in the most recent ORASPL for a decent 3-3 record. However, there are multiple signs that would point at a struggle. The pool is incredibly strong, and in his team there's not really anybody who's able to properly support him. He's been a rising player on the site, however, so we'll see if he'll be able to turn the expectations around.

1. ninjadog - Crunchwrap Supreme Overlord Juniors

In an RUPL without Finchinator, we finally have someone else in the first spot of the BW RU pool. ninjadog is an experienced player who has been playing BW for years, has an incredible 22-10 record in the RU sheet, and is also coming from a positive performance in last year's RUPL. Despite being a player who doesn't need support in this tier, ninjadog will count on the help of the chef Kushalos and Yay, which is more than enough. There are some new names in this pool, but ninjadog has already proven himself as a strong player, and another solid season should be waiting for him.

Avatar

2. GoldCat - Rocky Mountains' Payloaders

GoldCat is easily the player in this rankings with the most hours spent on playing BW RU, so it isn't anywhere near a surprise to see him this high. He also boasts tons of results to back him up, winning the BW RU Cup and multiple tours in different generations, like RU Generations and the RU Ladder Tour. His team tournament results are, however, mostly middling, with no real incredible or more-than-decent records. Expectations are high for GoldCat, and only time will tell if he's gonna be able to meet them, and with him being the only manager for his team, he might have to work really hard to achieve that.

Avatar

3. lax - Bulletproof Bombers

lax finds himself starting in BW RU in RUPL for the first time, but it won't really be a challenge for a player of his caliber. While he's not a stranger to goofups in lower tiers team tours like his 2-7 in last year's RUPL, he has historically always done well when managed by Ajna, which happens to be the case this time around. ima has also played the tier in the past, so lax has plenty of support to do great again.

Avatar

3. Lily - Noble Guardians

Lily continues her love-hate relationship with the Black and White tiers by slotting into BW RU this RUPL. She's historically been a respectable performer in BW RU while dabbling in BW UU and NU as well, an experience that would make anyone quickly get tired of the tier's 2x power crits that somehow always arrive at the worst moment. While she's achieved some success in BW RU, going 3-1 in it during RUSD II, she also went 0-3 in the tier during RUPL IX two years ago. She may also be tempted by SV RU, which looks suspiciously similar to early metas of SV UU, where she is the Tier Leader. Still, her experience in the tier and overall skill as a player, going 5-0 in her last SPL outing, ensure she is a tier above the next four players listed here.

Avatar

5. Guille - Deranged Hustlers

Guille might be the second-most passionate BW RU player in the pool, competing closely with GoldCat for that honorable title. He's a newcomer to the scene who nonetheless has earned a 9-4 record in RU team tours, along with a best-in-pool 5-1 record playing the tier in BWPL. With such strong results, why is he only fifth? While he could definitely prove this wrong, Guille has a reputation for being confined to one teamstyle: fat. Opponents may consider him counterteamable and be skeptical of his skill as an overall player, which sounds harsh but isn't really when the majority of the pool has six or more years of experience in competitive Pokémon. Regardless, Guille has been on a hot streak lately, so he likely comes in with plenty of confidence that he'll continue his success in what seems to be a tier he genuinely enjoys.

Avatar

6. BlazingDark - Tenacious Technicians

BlazingDark is a French tournament player who's dabbled in this tier in the past but has yet to play a full tournament in it to truthfully gauge any expectations. He's not unfamiliar with team tournaments, the contrary of it actually, and he's backed up by Astrø, who has recently won the BW RU RoA Spotlight Tournament, so the potential to pull out a great record is definitely there.

Avatar

7. Feaniix - Iron Fisters

3k starter Feaniix shocked the competition by finishing with the best record in the BW RU pool of last year's RUPL with a 5-2. Nonetheless, Feaniix has not moved an inch in the power rankings, being ranked 7th for the second year in a row. His RUPL success was immediately soured a smidge with an unfortunate 1-3 finish in the following RUWC V, leaving Feaniix with an overall record of 6-5 for 2023 and leaving us with much to be desired. Will Feaniix return to the starry heights of RUPL X? It's hard to tell, as the Iron Fisters are lacking when it comes to BW support, having to rely on pre-built teams passed by Clementine and maybe the BW NU fanatic Stories and old-timer atomicllamas. But if Feaniix defied expectations last year, who is to say it won't happen again this RUPL?

Avatar

8. devin - Toxic Chains

devin is a solid tournament player who has been around for a while; however, he is mostly seen as an OU player. Having little to no experience in BW RU, devin will rely on his main supporter eifo to supply him with teams, which is not a bad thing at all, but lacking tier knowledge is never good. With an unsurprising 4-5 record on the sheet, the expectations for him are low, but devin is not someone to underestimate, and his experience might lead him to a successful season.

1. Punny - Noble Guardians

Punny is ranked first in the most stacked pool of the tour by a landslide, which goes to show just how dominant Punny is. He's one of the best players in the tournament scene who came in during SS and won two RU Opens back to back as well as the Ladder Tour of that same generation, and he has been participating in RUPL since 2018, with an amazing 43-24 record. He has established himself as one of the best RU players for a while now, and even in the strongest of pools, there are no doubts that Punny will do well.

Avatar

2. TheFranklin - Tenacious Technicians

TheFranklin is one of the strongest players the RU tier has ever had. He has been dominating RU for a while, which is evidenced by his second spot in the Hall of Fame, only behind Ajna. Despite not doing very well in the last SCL, TheFranklin showed a great adaptation capacity when he almost ended the tournament with a positive record even after starting the season with four losses in a row. Coming from a hot trophy in the last RUPL as one of the star players of the winning team, TheFranklin is now willing to repeat the feat, this time managing the Tenacious Technicians. This year, he will have help from his fellow manager Floss and his teammates, which will be more than enough to guarantee that TheFranklin can once again be the star player of the winning team.

Avatar

3. Star - Rocky Mountains' Payloaders

Star has been participating in RU team tours for almost a decade now, going negative only twice. With a great 37-25 record and a win in the most recent RU Circuit, Star has proven himself as a dominant player in the tier, and with the only worry being support thanks to the right number of supporters for each generation, Star will most definitely dominate once more.

Avatar

4. Beraldo - Deranged Hustlers

Beraldo is perhaps the brightest rising star in the RU community, notching a dominant 7-1 record in SCL III, which was the best record in the RU pool, and leading his RUPL team to a championship last year. He's currently got a 6-0 record in UUPL playing SV UU too… unless you really care about his SPL performance, it's hard to be skeptical of him based on his results. One thing that puts him a notch below the top Bo3 players is his lack of SM experience, however. Beraldo joined RU fairly late in SS and has very limited experience playing SM, and his team's only SM player is Santu, who isn't exactly a bottomless source of teams. He'll likely have to solve that tier on the fly while supporting his team in a number of areas as manager, including a rapidly evolving SV meta. However, few players are better suited for current gen RU or SS RU than Beraldo, and he has overcome expectations many times before, such as in his transition to official tours in SCL.

Avatar

5. Feliburn - Bulletproof Bombers

In 5th place, we have tier leader Feliburn, who has recently shown that he is not only good at Pokémon but is also good at lying after tricking Smogon in his April Fools Day prank. He has a lot of experience in all RU gens, and this year he will have the support of his best friend Ajna; does he need anything else? I don't think so. Even though Feliburn ended last RUPL with a negative record, it only shows how stacked the Bo3 pool is, since he went positive in RUWC and SCL. With a 38-36 record on the sheet, Feliburn has the consistency that is needed to perform in a strong pool, and he has everything he needs to get a better record than expected.

Avatar

6. sensei axew - Iron Fisters

sensei axew is one of the most well-known lower tier players right now, with a ton of strong showings in SS RU, NU, and PU while continuing this success into SV. However, his RU sheet record is a surprising and underwhelming 12-13. He also has a pattern of inactivity in team tours, quitting mid-tour in SSPL earlier this year and frequently deadgaming (which, to be fair, doesn't really matter for the team's chances). His motivation is somewhat up in the air. However, the Iron Fisters have strong SS and SM support to accompany him; robjr was active in SS and SM, and Master Chief was active in SV and SM. This slot definitely has a high floor; in the worst-case scenario, sensei can play his beloved SM while Master Chief or robjr fills in. However, sensei being chosen for the prestigious Bo3 slot over either of those strong options shows his own high ceiling as a player. While he comes with some risk, sensei could easily outperform this ranking too.

Avatar

7. mncmt - Crunchwrap Supreme Overlord Juniors

mncmt is a strong player who has been showing lately that he is also one of the strongest players on the whole site after finding success in the official tournaments. While he hasn't played any RU team tournament since RUPL IX, he made his way into the finals of last year's Grand Slam, which shows that he can adapt himself to whatever tier he is slotted into. Having the support of his fellow manager Expulso and teammates Denial, hjkhj, and Yay, while also packing a solid 15-9 record in the sheet, he certainly has the capacity to overperform in a strong pool like this one. However, mncmt is also known for his inconsistency, which might lead one to wonder if this is one of the tournaments where he obliterates everyone or if he will get obliterated himself.

Avatar

8. EviGaro - Toxic Chains

Beloved tier leader EviGaro is ranked last, which goes to show just how strong the Bo3 pool is. She's been around for a long while now and just recently has shown prowess by winning an RU Seasonal. Outside of SV, she will have support from eifo, crossbow, and Mac3, who will be making sure Evi stays on top of her game buildingwise. It is, however, important to notice that Evi's team tournaments results have been on a decline for a while now, and in a strong pool like this she might struggle to keep up.
