Other Metagame Mashups (often abbreviated to OMMs or "mashups") are metagames formed by combining two or more metagames together. They can be played and discussed in the OM Mashups room on PS!, as well as on the OM Mashup Megathread on Smogon. You can play mashups either by requesting for tournaments to be set in the OMM room or by challenging your friends with the respective challenge codes.

OMMs were founded in 2018 by drampa's grandpa and Ransei. Initially, OMM tours were set in the Other Metagames room on Pokémon Showdown, mostly by drampa's grandpa. They caught on to some degree, and they were sometimes requested. drampa's grandpa then asked The Immortal, the OM leader at the time, about the possibility of getting a megathread for OMMs. Eventually, The Immortal told him to submit the megathread through OM submissions. The first submission didn't go through, mostly because the list of mashups drampa's grandpa posted didn't fit the niche the original thread was trying to fill. The Immortal gave him a list of mashups to use, notably including Pure Hackmons. Shortly after that, the megathread got accepted. This is where Ransei comes in. He really liked the idea, partially because his favorite metagame, Pure Hackmons, was back, as well as because he liked the metagames that were submitted as mashups. After the megathread was accepted, Ransei set up a groupchat for people to discuss and play OMMs. drampa's grandpa and Ransei helped get the official mashups developed, and several dedicated users ensured the groupchat remained lively. Eventually, the groupchat gained enough activity to be promoted to a subroom. Off of this foundation, mashups continued to grow, helped by tournament play, several successful rotational ladders, and randbats mayhem's great popularity, eventually getting it a permanent ladder.

OMMs are some of the most unique metagames in all of Smogon, with a wide range of extremely creative sets being possible. Most of them have extraordinarily high power levels; for example, in STAAAB, Adaptability Boomburst from the likes of Heliolisk can do insane damage, 2HKOing even bulky resistant foes such as maximum HP Tyranitar!

STAAABmons (usually shortened to STAAAB) is a mashup of STABmons and Almost Any Ability. This means that all Pokémon have access to Almost Any Ability, as well as all moves matching their type or their pre-evolution's type. It is the premier mashup within the community and has by far the most development and resources behind it. Appearances in multiple tournaments as well as the occasional presence of a ladder have made it the most popular and widespread OM mashup.

Metagame Thoughts

Thanks to the general buffs provided by STABmons movepools and the versatility of Almost Any Ability, nearly any fully evolved Pokémon can be used with some decent success in STAAAB. Even Pokémon that are often directly outclassed by their peers in standard tiers can eke out a niche thanks to these qualities. Because of the extremely high power level, bulky offense and hyper offense tend to be the most consistent and common playstyles in the metagame, although balance and stall are viable.

Important Threats

Zarude

Thanks to STABmons move legality, Zarude's normally solid Grassy Surge set from AAA becomes even stronger with the addition of Knock Off. Zarude is an excellent glue Pokémon for teams that need a revenge killer, wallbreaker, and offensive pivot. In addition, Pokémon that can usually block priority moves, like Dazzling Gengar and Psychic Surge Azelf, cannot safely switch in on Zarude, as they fear Knock Off. Grassy Glide's high power enables it to pick off weakened targets as well as many offensive Pokémon from full health. Knock Off is both powerful and spammable, removing important items like Heavy-Duty Boots and Leftovers from walls like Corviknight and Buzzwole that could otherwise handle Zarude. U-turn synergizes well with the many pivoting cores of STAAABmons, and Zarude's last move depends on the rest of your team: Close Combat handles Steel-types; Power Whip is absurdly powerful under Grassy Terrain, notably 2HKOing Toxapex; Switcheroo cripples walls such as Corviknight even harder than Knock Off does; and Sucker Punch picks off faster, Grass-resistant offensive Pokémon like Talonflame and Tornadus-T.

Buzzwole

Buzzwole is one of those Pokémon that get a lot from both STABmons and Almost Any Ability, and thus it is one of the most versatile Pokémon in STAAAB. Its repertoire includes sets built around Triage, Choice Band + Adaptability, and Regenerator + Choice Scarf, as well as this physically defensive set. This set aims to be a blanket check to physical attackers like Tyranitar, Excadrill, and Garchomp by using its immense physical bulk and decent typing. It is able to use the free turns it can generate from walling these physical attackers to set up Sticky Web or gain momentum with U-turn. Body Press does good damage coming off of Buzzwole's meaty Defense stat, and it can even be boosted by Dauntless Shield. Dauntless Shield gives Buzzwole more raw physical bulk in order to take on extremely strong physical attackers like Technician Garchomp more effectively, Regenerator makes it much less susceptible to chip damage, and Magic Bounce lets it block entry hazards and other status moves effectively.

Heliolisk

Heliolisk is a devastatingly powerful wallbreaker and offensive pivot with two primary sets. Adaptability gives Heliolisk an absurdly powerful Boomburst, which can OHKO or 2HKO nearly every Pokémon that doesn't resist it (bar Blissey and Chansey), while Electric Surge boosts Rising Voltage up to 182 Base Power, while also providing useful Terrain support. Heliolisk can also run a coverage move to nail either Rock-, Ground-, or Ghost- types and rounds out its set with either Volt Switch or U-turn depending on user preference. Although it's extremely powerful, Heliolisk is extremely prediction reliant. Ghost- and Ground- types can easily absorb one of its STAB moves, and being locked into a coverage move is unfavorable due to their low damage output. Heliolisk thus pairs well with entry hazard support and other members of a VoltTurn core, both of which ease its reliance on prediction.

Chansey

Ah yes, Chansey. The bane of every new STAAAB player's existence. Chansey is an insanely useful blob of utility in STAAAB and is the cornerstone of stall and bulky offense alike. Its sheer bulk lets it stand up to even the strongest special wallbreakers STAAAB has to offer while providing excellent team support with its humongous movepool. Whirlwind lets it phaze any Pokémon attempting to set up on it. Counter pairs especially well with Regenerator, as Chansey can take a strong physical hit, KO the attacker back, and switch out to regain HP. Glare on the other hand ruins most offensive Pokémon and further adds to the chaos Chansey can cause. Rapid Spin can also be used to compress entry hazard control, although the increase in Chansey's passivity is notable. Wish pairs well with Regenerator, as the combination lets Chansey heal itself and others at the same time. However, Soft-Boiled is useful with both abilities, as it provides instant recovery. Teleport maintains momentum, preventing Chansey from being too passive while helping get frail wallbreakers in safely. Regenerator gives Chansey excellent longevity and reduces the need to use recovery moves, while Magic Bounce lets it block entry hazards from the likes of Swampert very effectively.

This is one of the current sample teams, built by Tranquility. Despite not gaining that much from STABmons move legality, Talonflame remains a decent threat with its Magic Guard + Life Orb set, utilizing its incredible STAB combination. Tyranitar and Heliolisk both have insanely powerful STAB moves in Magic Guard + Life Orb Head Smash and Adaptability Boomburst, respectively. The trio is also able to take advantage of each other's checks, and the latter two also have pivot moves to maintain momentum. Swampert, Chansey, and Corviknight provide a solid defensive backbone for the team that can at least soft check most threats in the metagame. They also all have pivoting moves, helping get the powerful wallbreakers in safely.

TSAAA, as the name suggests, is a combination of Almost Any Ability and Tier Shift. This means that any Pokémon can get almost any ability, and Pokémon below OU get boosts to all of their base stats except HP; specifically, UU Pokémon get +10, RU get +20, NU get +30, and PU and below get +40. Lower tier Pokémon dominate the metagame thanks to their improved stats and newfound abilities. Because of the increased power level, many Ubers like Ho-Oh and Groudon are also free; they are still able to run almost any ability, but are unaffected by the Tier Shift bonuses.

Metagame Thoughts

In TSAAA, a vast array of Pokémon are viable thanks to the increased stats and shiny new abilities. As a result, it is very diverse, with every playstyle being viable. Bulky offense tends to be the easiest playstyle to build and play, as its defensive Pokémon can check the offensive threats of the metagame long enough for its own offensive threats to break through the opposing team. TSAAA also has a large range of pivots, meaning that getting in frail wallbreakers is often a breeze. However, other playstyles like hyper offense and balance are also very viable. One playstyle that is particularly good is Trick Room. The Tier Shift boost makes Trick Room wallbreakers like Alolan Marowak, Galarian Corsola, Melmetal, and Drampa almost entirely unwallable, letting them make full use of the Trick Room turns.

Important Threats

Silvally-Dragon

New stats: 95/135/135/135/135/135

Assault Vest Silvally-Dragon is the face of TSAAA, acting as a blanket check for much of the special metagame while also providing safe entry for frail offensive Pokémon such as Urshifu, Kadabra, and Inteleon with U-turn. Poison Fang significantly reduces Silvally-Dragon's passivity by threatening poison on would-be switch-ins like Ho-Oh, Vaporeon, and opposing Silvally, making it rather annoying to switch into. Draco Meteor hits threats like Groudon, Inteleon, and Urshifu for heavy STAB damage, while Flamethrower chips Steel-types that can tank all of Silvally-Dragon's other moves with impunity, like Metagross and Magearna. 68 Speed EVs let it outspeed Adamant Urshifu, but it can also run minimum Speed for slow pivoting.

Dhelmise

New stats: 70/161/130/116/120/70

Dhelmise is one of the best cleaners and revenge killers in TSAAA, with its powerful priority Grassy Glide revenge killing important threats like Gallade, Inteleon, and Kadabra. Poltergeist complements it perfectly, giving Dhelmise near-perfect neutral coverage with just its STAB moves. In fact, itemless walls are somewhat common to check Dhelmise and Alolan Marowak. Synthesis along with Grassy Terrain gives Dhelmise good longevity, letting it last until late-game.

Salazzle

New stats: 68/94/90/141/90/147

Nasty Plot Salazzle is one of the most devastating wallbreakers in TSAAA. Corrosive Gas means that it can beat Assault Vest users like Lanturn and Silvally Dragon, as they are all OHKOed by a +2 Sludge Wave after getting their item removed. Its good Speed tier along with its great STAB combination means that it gets plenty of opportunities to wallbreak despite its awful bulk, as it can force out metagame staples such as Avalugg, Dhelmise, and Urshifu, and getting it in safely is a breeze thanks to how common pivoting moves are in TSAAA. However, its crippling weakness to entry hazards does hamper its longevity.

Avalugg

New stats: 95/157/224/84/86/68

Avalugg is one of the best physical walls in TSAAA, being able to check much of the physical metagame without remaining passive thanks to its good Attack stat and strong Body Press. Despite its terrible defensive typing, Avalugg is able to be an effective wall due to its sheer bulk; for example, with Iron Defense it is able to switch into and wall Triage Gallade, and it can also easily take Adaptability Alolan Marowak's Flare Blitz from full HP. Avalanche gives Avalugg a strong STAB move that crucially hits Pokémon such Dhelmise and Gallade. Rapid Spin can be used for extra role compression, while Iron Defense helps it check Pokémon such as Dhelmise, Centiskorch, and Gallade.

This is a standard TSAAA bulky offense team, made by The Dragon Master. Dragon's Maw Silvally-Dragon is an insane nuke that immediately vaporizes everything that isn't a Steel- or Fairy-type with its Choice Specs Draco Meteor. Salazzle is a great partner for Silvally-Dragon, as it can force out the Steel- and Fairy-types that can check Silvally-Dragon. Yveltal acts as the team's revenge killer with its powerful Triage Oblivion Wing, while Knock Off lets it cripple Assault Vest users such as Lanturn and Silvally-Dragon. It can also help dance around threats like Kadabra and Urshifu with its useful typing and bulk. Lanturn acts as the team's blanket check to special attackers. Braviary is a good check to physical attackers like Dhelmise and provides entry hazard control. Groudon helps dance around physical threats, is the team's Stealth Rock setter, and is also a solid Ground-type.

At first glance, this team, often called "Riceroom", in honor of its founder RICEMAN, seems like something that only bad players would lose to. However, it is very effective, mostly due to the ridiculous power of the wallbreakers. Diancie is this team's usual lead, as it has Magic Bounce to prevent opposing entry hazards. After setting Trick Room and, if the opportunity presents itself, Stealth Rock, it generally Explodes, paving the way for the wallbreakers. Alolan Marowak is the most important wallbreaker on this team, with its power being jacked up even further by Adaptability and the boost given by Tier Shift. It is almost entirely unwallable with simply the combination of Swords Dance and its STAB moves. Cursola forces out the physical walls that can take a hit from Alolan Marowak and thus waste Trick Room turns. Destiny Bond lets it threaten to take something else down with it. Melmetal is extremely powerful, with its Steelworker Double Iron Bash tearing through everything that doesn't resist it, and it also comes with a very nice 51% flinch chance. Gyro Ball is used to hit Pokémon with Rocky Helmet without suffering a lot of recoil. Beheeyem is the second Trick Room setter on the team. Prankster in combination with Destiny Bond means that opposing Pokémon can effectively not hit Beheeyem for two turns, as otherwise they will be knocked out. Trevenant is the final Trick Room setter, which is often used last, as it has no way of KOing itself or pivoting out to the wallbreakers. Magic Guard ensures that its Focus Sash stays intact to near-guarantee that it gets Trick Room up.

As its name suggests, STABnMega is a mashup of STABmons and Mix and Mega, allowing Pokémon to use moves they share a type with in addition to Mega Stones. This enables terrifying combinations such as Surging Strikes Gyarados holding Lucarionite. Its banlist is similar to those of STABmons and Mix and Mega, with a few key differences, such as the unrestriction of Pheromosa and the restriction of Keldeo and Kartana. STABnMega is one of the more popular OM Mashups, having been chosen as Leader's Choice of the Month and included in tournaments such as the Tours Plaza Premier League.

Metagame Thoughts

STABnMega is full of pivots, as the sheer power of its wallbreakers puts much more pressure on defensive cores, so it is usually easier to try to out-offense your opponent than tank their hits. Teams are often comprised of at least one or two pivots paired with at least one or two wallbreakers in order to give yourself the most opportunities to win the game. A common example is Magearna and Pheromosa, as Magearna is able to safely pivot Pheromosa in with its slow Volt Switch, while Pheromosa breaks the opposing team.

Important Threats

Magearna

Latiasite Magearna is one of STABnMega's best Pokémon. Now receiving reliable recovery in Moonlight thanks to STABmons, Magearna is one of the only checks to a number of insanely powerful attackers such as Scizorite Garchomp, with Latiasite's Levitate making Magearna immune to both of Garchomp's STAB moves. Doom Desire is a great move to help enable its teammates, putting pressure on physically defensive walls thanks to Magearna's high Special Attack stat and Doom Desire's high Base Power. Moonblast stops Magearna from being overly passive, as it can deal large amounts of damage to many common offensive Pokémon such as Regieleki, Garchomp, and Pheromosa. Volt Switch lets Magearna generate momentum for its teammates and pairs exceptionally well with Doom Desire.

Gyarados

Lucarionite Gyarados is an insanely powerful wallbreaker that is easily capable of sweeping teams. Surging Strikes and Dragon Ascent are absurdly powerful moves that hit a large portion of the metagame for at least neutral damage. Dragon Dance allows Gyarados to outspeed the entire unboosted metagame except Regieleki. Roost takes advantage of Gyarados's solid bulk, allowing it to come in multiple times and set up on passive Pokémon.

Regieleki

Regieleki is a top Pokémon in Mix and Mega and remains one in STABnMega. Altarianite gives Regieleki a large Attack boost and Pixilate along with Fairy typing, letting it effectively cut through teams or perform revenge killing duties with STAB Extreme Speed. While Regieleki is stuck with Wild Charge as a physical Electric-type move in standard play, STABmons fixes this issue, giving it access to Bolt Strike to hit the common Fairy-resistant foes in the tier for good damage. It can also effectively compress entry hazard control if necessary. Due to its high Speed and access to multiple good moves, Regieleki is very easy to fit on most teams, making it both one of the best and one of the most common Pokémon.

Garchomp

A question often asked is: would Garchomp be broken if it learned Dragon Dance? In base STABmons, the answer is yes, but STABnMega lets Dragon Dance Garchomp have a home. In addition to Dragon Dance, Garchomp makes use of two new STAB moves, Dragon Darts and Bonemerang, both of which are further boosted from the new ability it receives from Scizorite, Technician. Shore Up is the final move, making use of its good bulk to tank weak hits and set up multiple times over the course of a game. Garchomp's STAB moves are so threatening after it gets a Dragon Dance up that many teams opt to use a Steel-type such as Magearna or Excadrill with Latiasite to avoid being run through.

This is a bulky offense team built by DerpyBoi around Victini, a terrifying wallbreaker that utilizes the move V-create. The team makes use of multiple pivots in order to ease prediction and get its wallbreakers in as often as possible. Metagrossite Zamazenta is insanely fast and powerful, allowing it to easily clean up teams once Nasty Plot Hydreigon and Victini have forced enough damage on the opposing teams defensive core. Slowbronite Zapdos is another great Pokémon, as it is very bulky yet still hits pretty hard, and it is one of the best checks to strong wallbreakers like Pheromosa. Magearna and Swampert are very common Pokémon, being great blanket checks to special and physical attackers, respectively.

PokéAAAbilities, often referred to as PokéAAA, is a combination of Almost Any Ability and Pokébilities, giving Pokémon access to all of their native abilities along with an ability of their choice. This means that a Heatran given Regenerator would have Flame Body, Flash Fire, and Regenerator all at once. PokéAAA is one of the more developed mashups, as well as one of the few mashups to have been chosen to have a monthly ladder.

Metagame Thoughts

If you are familiar with AAA, you will not have a difficult time learning PokéAAA, as the common team structures and Pokémon are quite similar. For those not familiar with AAA, both it and PokéAAA are momentum-heavy metagames. Most teams include multiple offensive and defensive pivots to allow their wallbreakers to come is as often as possible.

Important Threats

Tapu Koko

Tapu Koko is one of, if not the, best offensive Pokémon in the meta. Its high Speed and good offensive typing threatens most other offensive Pokémon like Talonflame, while U-turn gains momentum on the few Pokémon that can safely switch into it. Mold Breaker breaks through Pokémon such as Volt Absorb Corviknight and Toxapex, which are both very common answers to non-Mold Breaker variants. Choice Specs and Heavy-Duty Boots are both good choices for the item slot, with the former making Tapu Koko incredibly hard to switch into, while the latter allows it to better serve as an offensive pivot by avoid entry hazard chip.

Heracross

Heracross is a terrifying wallbreaker in PokéAAA that makes use of its native ability Guts to overpower physical walls. Quick Feet lets it to outspeed most unboosted Pokémon, while Toxic Boost powers up its physical attacks even further, allowing it to get past Pokémon that would otherwise check it like Tapu Fini. While Heracross can be very difficult to switch into, it gets worn down very quickly by entry hazards and Rocky Helmet Pokémon, and its reliance on status make common Pokémon like Tapu Fini great answers to it.

Aegislash

Aegislash is not a good choice in most ability-based formats because it would lose Stance Change, but in PokéAAA it finds its place as a strong wallbreaker that is very difficult to wear down. The combination of Regenerator, Leftovers, King's Shield, and Substitute mean that defensive Pokémon like Lanturn and Landorus-T have an insanely difficult time dealing with Aegislash, which pressures them with Toxic, while offensive Pokémon must be wary of switching in, as they do not want to get hit by Shadow Ball.

This standard bulky offense team, built by Clastia, does a great job of showcasing the PokéAAA meta. The team is built around the powerful offensive core of Choice Specs Tapu Koko, Choice Band Crawdaunt, and Quick Feet Heracross. All three boast great damage output and can be insanely hard to play around when supported by pivoting moves. Crawdaunt offers the most raw damage output of the team, with its Water-type moves being almost impossible to stomach. For example, it is able to OHKO non-Intimidate Corviknight and 2HKO most other defensive Pokémon, with the notable exception of Tapu Fini. However, Choice Specs Mold Breaker Tapu Koko loves Crawdaunt forcing in Tapu Fini, as it threatens to OHKO it outright and can pivot out with U-turn on a predicted switch to one of its checks such as Blissey. Heracross is another very strong wallbreaker that pairs well with Crawdaunt and Tapu Koko, as it loves Tapu Fini being weakened or KOed and can easily pressure the specially defensive Pokémon of the tier and sweep late-game due to Moxie boosts. The defensive core is built around Dauntless Shield Mew, Regenerator Landorus-T, and Blissey, all common defensive staples. Together, Mew and Landorus-T are able to blanket check most physical attackers. Blissey needs little explanation; it is an amazing special wall checks most special attackers, including the ubiquitous Tapu Koko and the great Sigilyph. The team is very straightforward to use: use your defensive pivots to get your three offensive Pokémon in as often as possible, as each only needs a little bit of chip on its checks to win the game.

Final Thoughts
