Introduction

Welcome to the latest edition of Judge a Pokémon Express. Bewear, though! It's not all Bounsweet... so sit down on a Comfey chair and enjoy! This edition we'll be covering all the Pokémon released in the last fortnight (Bewear, Bounsweet, Comfey, Mimikyu, Wimpod and Mudsdale). Let's welcome Codraroll, {Pokemon_Vigilante}, GatoDelFuego, DHR-107, and Tikitik.

If you'd like the chance to join one of our future JAPE panels as a guest, feel free to give your opinions on Smogon's Facebook page (and be sure to check your "Others" folder!)

Bewear

Codraroll

Codraroll

At first glance, Bewear looks like a big, dumb teddy bear. I find this rather unfortunate. It's not like Bewear's design is bad, but its stock pose in official art makes it look a lot dumber than it is upon closer inspection—the same type of problem that Garbodor suffers from. Seen in other poses, Bewear looks a lot more interesting, cute, and well designed, but its official art and in-game model (as seen in trailers) definitely do not do it justice. Bewear suffers badly from poor posing. It does not convey any sort of personality or traits beyond "hello kids, I'm a bear."

That being said, even though the pose is the worst thing about Bewear's design, it is not the only thing holding it back. Bewear is shaped like a bean with assorted appendages glued on. Its arms, legs and tail are very crude and simple, lacking apparent joints or digits. Its face is very bland and generic, and the only thing separating the head from the body is an abrupt change of color. The "bowtie" tufts of hair add some features to the face, but it raises the question—why does Bewear have a bowtie?

All in all, Bewear's design is neither good nor well posed. I do like its name, though.

Mimikyu

Codraroll

Codraroll

I'm not sure whether I can comment on Mimikyu's design at all. Like Tangela, Shellder, and Diglett, the design leans heavily on what you don't see. Mimikyu appears to be all covered up by a crudely made cloth doll, only showing a pair of eyes, a skirt-like feature showing under the cloth, and occasionally a limb of some sort.

The concept of Mimikyu deserves to be praised, though. A small, shy creature disguising itself to protect itself and to make friends. It's sad, sweet, and an original idea for a Pokémon design. It also appears to allow for disguises in several different styles, so I wouldn't be surprised to see Mimikyu disguised as other Pokémon as more info is revealed.

Wimpod

Codraroll

Codraroll

This strange, little arthropod Pokémon is reminiscent of a horseshoe crab, which also is the design basis for Kabuto. However, Wimpod elegantly avoids being a mere Kabuto copy, with its segmented body, large eyes, and anchor-like silhouette. The gray-and-purple color scheme is also unusual for Bug and Water Pokémon alike. Overall, Wimpod manages to be an original design despite sharing a design basis with previous Pokémon.

On a detail level, I must say I'm not that impressed Wimpod's eyes. Not only are they frozen in a permanent squint, the lower eyelids line up almost too well with the border between the body's two colors. It's as if the eyes were put in place first and the line drawn later. Its upper eyelids somehow arch in the opposite direction of the lower, giving the visible part of the eyeball a weird inverted arch shape. Wimpod's antennae also irk me as an engineer; they narrow to a point near their "roots" rather than widen, so their anchoring to the body is very flimsy. It looks like they would fall off at the slightest touch, or for that matter in a light breeze.

This is all nitpicking, though. I like Wimpod's design, and I can't wait to see it in play. Its flavour text mentions that it runs from approaching people, but it will approach them itself as long as they stand still. Wimpod also picks up garbage and dropped objects. I can imagine several ways to translate this into overworld mechanics. Here's hoping Wimpod delivers!

Bounsweet

Codraroll

Codraroll

At a glance, Bounsweet is very reminiscent of Cherubi. A round, pink fruit underneath a tuft of green leaves. Bounsweet has a pure Grass typing, two preexisting and already widely distributed abilities, and it does pretty much nothing in its reveal trailer. Unless it evolves into something interesting, Bounsweet appears to be a very generic "dex-fodder" Pokémon. Then again, Cherubi evolved into something (technically) interesting, and it is still dex fodder.

There are silver linings, though. Bounsweet's flavor text is full of dark humor. They are commonly used as air fresheners, but they are sometimes accidentally eaten by curious Pokémon drawn by the scent. It can only move in jolly, carefree-looking bounces, so it gives off the impression of blissful happiness even when running from mortal danger. It is also mentioned that Bounsweet fight by rotating its calyx. Could this be a hint of a helicopter-like evolution?

Lastly, with the calyx "hair", face and color scheme, Bounsweet reminds me a lot of Smoochum. I can't be the only one, right?

Comfey

Codraroll

Codraroll

  • "Quick, what is the most Hawaiian thing you can come up with?"
  • "Uh, a Kolohe? You know, that flower thing you wear around your neck?"
  • "Brilliant! Make it a Pokémon! You have two minutes!"

That's roughly how I first imagined the design process for this Pokémon started. It must have been followed by an argument about whether excluding a secondary Grass typing from Flabébé was a smart enough move to warrant repeating. Comfey is literally 80% flowers, yet it retains a pure Fairy typing.

That being said, in its defense Comfey is not technically a ring of flowers. It's a small, bird-like creature carrying a ring of flowers. Knowing that, I immediately like it a lot better, even though its design concept is the exact same as that of Flabébé, only with more flowers and an added string. The "creature carrying object" (or "object-carrying creature"?) concept has been done with a lot of Pokémon previously, but this must be the first time the object is so much larger than the creature holding it.

Comfey's core design is an orange ball with a smiley face and fabulous, green hair. It's a simple design, yet effective, although Comfey itself is a little hard to spot among its flowers. Once you spot it, though, and learn from flavor text what you're looking at, Comfey is a lot more likable than it appears at first glance. Kudos to Game Freak for making a Kolohe-carrying Pokémon that is not a Hula dancer.

Mudsdale

Codraroll

Codraroll

Despite horses being a common and diverse family of animals on Earth, we have had very few Pokémon based on them. Ponyta is technically a pony (it's in the name), Rapidash is an unicorn, so is Keldeo (unless you count it as a Kelpie—either way, not a horse), and Blitzle and Zebstrika are zebras. Straight-up, honest-to-Arceus, no-fluff horses have not yet been featured in Pokémon until Mudsdale. So, how does our first horse hold up?

I like it. At first glance, you notice its earthen colors. Brown, black, and red work together to reinforce Mudsdale's Ground typing. Its heavy mane and thick mud cover almost make it look armored. You can see traces of a very generic-looking horse underneath all the padding, but the padding is part of the design after all, so Mudsdale is definitely not generic!

Mudsdale's eyes hold a lot of emotion too. Are they droopy and sad, or determined and stoic? Hard to tell underneath that mane. Mudsdale is definitely lugging around a lot of extra weight, with all the mud on the mane, tail and hooves. Perhaps a good wash and a shave would make it happier—or deeply embarrassed? In any case, Mudsdale looks like a good companion and a solid worker. It will find its way onto many players' teams, possibly mine included.

Mimikyu

{Pokemon_Vigilante}

{Pokemon_Vigilante}

I couldn't be happier with the concept of the great ghostly vibe that Mimikyu has!! I have long believed that the Ghost-types should slightly resemble things that have that certain Halloween flair to them for no other reason than the fact that I have a Halloween birthday. And what better way to represent the spirit of Halloween than to dress up in a Pikachu disguise? The whole paper bag mask look sold me on this Pokémon the moment I saw it, and it actually brings back fond memories of trick or treating for me. All you have to do is sit back and wait to see if Mimikyu scares you!! There is so much love in this Pokéfan heart for Mimikyu that I may mimic it!

Bewear

{Pokemon_Vigilante}

{Pokemon_Vigilante}

I wonder if the dex entry in the Pokédex will read "Fluffy Klutz"? Bewear looks more like a cousin to Winnie the Pooh than anything else. The color scheme kinda reminds me of Pancham, and if they wanted another panda lookalike, then they should have tried hard to make this Pokémon look like something you shouldn't mess with instead of cuddle, since it is gifted with a secondary Fighting typing. I think back to this black and white bear my sister had that she won at a fair, and I see Bewear staring at my face through the eyes of that bear. Its ability names leave me wishing it had been a typo, but I somehow doubt it will be. I'd be slightly more impressed if this bear didn't remind me of a dancing bear at a circus, but since Bewear is a done deal, I guess the only thing left to do is ignore it, in my opinion.

Mudsdale

{Pokemon_Vigilante}

{Pokemon_Vigilante}

First, we had Rapidash. But since that time, I have been left wondering where the other horse-like Pokémon have been. Well that wait is now over, and I couldn't be happier!! I love everything about Mudsdale, from the way its braided hair looks to the massive hooves and even the movements!! Rapidash was always a gorgeous and powerful Pokémon, and I get that same feeling looking at Mudsdale. I can't stop wishing I could just jump on its back and take off wherever the trails take us. Gorgeous color scheme and design come together to make this Pokémon a definite 10/10 in my book!! I'm also hoping it has an evolution that makes it way bigger than it already is. Saddle up, folks, cause I have a feeling Mudsdale will be in teams or stables (boxes) no matter who the player is. This is going to be a long eight seconds!!

Bewear

Tikitik

Tikitik

I'm not a big fan of Bewear, although its design does work with the lore we were given. Something that I really liked about the Alola starters was that they were full of personality, and giving them somewhat relatable traits can really go a long way. In Bewear's case, we have a story of a friendly, affectionate Pokémon powerful enough to hurt others simply by embracing them with an innocent hug. With its combination of big powerful arms, fluffy adorable face, and kind of an awkward stance, it makes for an interesting design that definitely works for this cleverly named Pokémon. I can't say I'm too eager to be its trainer considering his dangerously friendly hugs, but I'm certain there'd be many happy to try their luck with taming this beast; let's hope they don't get split in half.

Mimikyu

Tikitik

Tikitik

Another Pokémon with an interesting, sad lore. Mimikyu mimics (heh) Pikachu by decorating an old cloth to resemble its face and body features, purely to become popular and accepted by others. The disease it carries once the cloth is taken off only makes things worse!

Even though the design is pretty much a creepy Pikachu doll, I still think Mimikyu has enough going for it to stand on its own. The ghost tentacle thing that's revealed once it attacks as well as those suddenly sparkling eyes under the cloth are a really nice touch. I'm not sure if I want to see an evolution just to satisfy my curiosity about the story and how Mimikyu actually looks, since it might be for the best to leave things to the imagination about what's beneath that cloth.

Bounsweet

Tikitik

Tikitik

Another Cherubi! Seriously though, while its design might not be the most original one we've seen so far, the dex entry is truly sad and disturbing, so I'm surprised how Bounsweet manages to keep that adorable smile on its face when its life is pretty terrible. They smell so nice that they get swallowed by other Pokémon, they bounce so adorably that people don't realize when they need help while running away from a threat. But hey, even though it's essentially helpless considering its defense tactic is getting dizzy, Bounsweet embraces the sad fate it was given by bouncing around ever so optimistically, in hope for a better future.

Comfey

Tikitik

Tikitik

I really don't have much to say about Comfey. It's pretty simplistic and reminds me of Klefki. It also continues the design trend of having small creatures holding flowers be Fairy-types, even though it probably should have been a Grass-type. Healing is definitely the main theme of this Pokémon, being able to relax others with the scent of its flower ring as well as helping out in hospitals and Pokémon Centers. Oh, it's also cute and colorful!

Yeah, even Klefki is better than this.

Mudsdale

Tikitik

Tikitik

Definitely my favorite out of this batch of revealed Pokémon, this guy is super heavy, super strong, has a cool design and nice colors to accompany its personality. They really insist on pointing out how strong it is, as we've been told that it can destroy cars with a single kick, defeat foes with a single powerful blow, and create massive holes in the ground just by galloping.

Combine that strength with being one of the heaviest Pokémon we know and you've got yourself a partner to intimidate both trainers and other Pokémon purely by its presence.

Wimpod

DHR-107

DHR-107

I'm not sure what to make of this design. It kinda looks like a trilobite or a woodlouse of some description. The colors don't really work for me either. Other than that, it's a typical Bug-typed looking Pokémon. It's got a bit of a contradictory personality to it according to the website, being both cowardly but incredibly curious about things in its vicinity.

Wimp Out appears to be some sort of buff to Run Away in some regards. I'm not sure how useful this ability will be (in my eyes not very likely). But a lot of people think that with the auto-switch it'll be able to put you in an advantageous position in battle. I just hope its evolution is some sort of huge scorpion or something...

Bounsweet

DHR-107

DHR-107

What a poor Pokémon Bounsweet is! It gets chased cause it smells good, eaten cause it tastes good, and doesn't get help because it looks so happy all the time even when its running away! I actually quite like the design of this little chap. Reminds me a little bit of an updated Cherubi in some ways, but I hope it evolves into something cooler than Cherrim. Doesn't look like it's anything to write home about at the moment, but it could easily get far better with an evolution or two.

Comfey

DHR-107

DHR-107

Comfey is a lei. I don't really know what else to say about it at this point. Once again Game Freak have presented us a Pokémon that has all the hallmarks of being a Grass- type but it is in fact a Fairy (Yes I'm looking at you Florges). The colors are cool but the design is kind of basic. I hope this one evolves too.

Triage seems like a potentially strong ability. Can we have some of these moved to other Pokémon where they might be more useful? Priority healing puts it into the realms of Talonflame or Prankster users, but only if it gets a decent move to use it. It appears to use Synthesis in the video, but priority Heal Pulse in doubles would be a useful and unique niche for it.

Mudsdale

DHR-107

DHR-107

At the minimum this thing is a pretty huge Pokémon. At maximum, this is probably my favourite new design so far. Mudsdale takes us back to the times of old where horses would pull carriages, ploughs, and heavy trailers. This is shown in this design with the enormous power it exudes. The huge heavy set feet give a off a powerful vibe and likely massively increase this Pokémon's traction in slippery conditions. The colors work with its demure expression, especially the ash grey color of the mane.

It gets a new ability with the name Stamina. This ability gives it Defense boosts as it gets hit by physical moves. Seems like this could be incredibly powerful in-game, especially since not many Pokémon work with a mixed moveset. I just hope it has the base Defense to make it work properly! High Horsepower is pretty likely to be a Ground-typed signature move that I would not mind Zebstrika and Rapidash also getting a hold of.

Mimikyu

DHR-107

DHR-107

Awwww... Look at this little t-OH MY GOSH IT'S ALIVE. This terrifying Pokémon is made up of a discarded piece of cloth that it has drawn a likeness of Pikachu on...Because it wants to be popular... If you take off the cloth? You die to a disease that Mimikyu is known to carry. Lovely. I am kinda torn on if I like it or not. Its backstory is both horrifying and heartbreaking at the same time. The design with the creepy hand coming out from underneath and the teeny, glinty eyes is really cool.

Disguise is a really powerful ability. It essentially gives you an automatic substitute on the switch in. It can take one attack without giving up any HP. We aren't sure how many times you can activate this ability, but if Mimikyu's stats are any good we could see it being used as a scout as long as it gets U-turn or Volt Switch. What is scary about this though is the animation... It looks like Mimikyu's neck snaps as the Disguise is used up...

Bewear

DHR-107

DHR-107

Seriously Game Freak? Are you doing this to us? An amazingly punny name connected to a genuinely creepy Pokémon. The expressionless face and the sheer power that it has is a combination that I find both disturbing and intriguing. The fact it can crush you by loving you too much is a scary thought. Imagine it chasing you down a dark corridor windmilling its arms around scattering objects everywhere...

Apart from it being a design that we have had two variants of already (it has similarities to both Ursaring and Pangoro), it at least is somewhat new in that it has a decent typing. Normal / Fighting gives it excellent coverage, and with the usual Normal-type movepool it could be a serious threat ingame. I'm not expecting it to be anything big competitively unless its ability gives it serious Defense.

On that note, I'm not sure why Fluffy exists. The wording is a bit strange but it seems like it is very similar to Fur Coat but with an added bit of "flammability". Why make an inferior version of an ability that already exists? Just use the one that is already there...

Bewear

GatoDelFuego

GatoDelFuego

Bewear is a bear. But it's a dangerous bear—you should be wary of this bear. The sad thing is that it's so friendly too; it really cares about its trainer! I like that it walks on its hind legs, like a man. Some might call it half man, half bear... a werebear. In short, beware Bewear, the were bear care bear.

I really like Bewear. The ears, lil' button nose, and fluffy tail really give it a great cute factor! I especially love its paw prints. I really like Pokémon with personality, so the all the lore of it being so dangerously friendly really clicks with me. Bewear is a Pokémon I'd love to own myself. But as far as its competitive prospects go? The future doesn't look that bright. Game Freak is not known for balancing Pokémon with powerful abilities to have good stats, and Normal / Fighting is not only a dull type combination, but a pretty bad defensive one. Bewear's design can stand on its own, but I'd like to see it evolve just for the chance of better stats, because I'd love to see its face plastered all around the competitive scene!

Mimikyu

GatoDelFuego

GatoDelFuego

Mimikyu is definitely the fan favorite of this batch of Pokémon, if the art I've seen speaks for anything. I think the design is pretty original, even though Mimikyu is based off another Pokémon entirely. The aspects that make Mimikyu its own Pokémon, such as the crooked ears, the shifty underside, and the shadow tentacle, are really cool and bring something unique to the Pokémon world. I just can't get away from the image of a kid's ghost costume, though. But maybe that's what Game Freak was going for... and that's kind of what I don't like. The lore says Mimikyu is super lonely and wants to make friends with people. In that case, why not hang out in alleyways with all the other scene kids and drifters? Why does it inflict every human that sees its true form with sickness if it wants to be friends? It's like the perfect tragic background that would make any middle-aged homeowner squeal about how cute it is and run out and adopt one today. Nice try, SPCP (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Pokémon), but I'm not buying it. Maybe Mimikyu's true plan is a lot darker than making friends... it IS a Fairy-type, and those Pokémon are bad news. Not only that, but it's a Ghost-type too! Death Pokémon! I'm not falling for any of its tricks.

Wimpod

GatoDelFuego

GatoDelFuego

I'm pretty sure Wimpod is based on a horseshoe crab, and those things are pretty cool animals. And when I say "based on," I mean somebody took a horseshoe crab, added eyes, and recolored it with Photoshop. Does it get a pass just because it's a new animal? Eh... maybe a little. As for personality, "scared of everything" really only goes so far, and with a name like Wimpod you just know somebody was grasping at straws very early on in the design process. Its ability is Wimp Out, to make sure that absolutely nobody in the entire world DOESN'T know that this Pokémon is timid. I'm pretty sure ALL Pokémon are scared of humans, or at least the Eevee I keep finding in Pokémon Go are. Bug and Water, as well as heavy hints of Poison in the lore, have some potential for competitive use, though (Wimp Out plus U-turn too!), so I'm just hoping that Wimpod evolves right away so I can look at something more interesting.

Bounsweet

GatoDelFuego

GatoDelFuego

Cherubi looks really cute! I like the red body and the green leaves on top. Green and red are complementary colors, so right from the get-go it looks pleasing to the eye. An air freshener-type Pokémon design hasn't really been thought of before—Aroma Ladies have used stuff like Roselia in the past, but Spritzee is the first Pokémon based entirely around smelling nice. My favorite part about Hoppip, though, is the lore. Picturing Skiploom bouncing along the ground as it's chased by a predator sounds pretty grim, but the cute expression it has in the art would definitely fool me into thinking it's having the time of its life. Overall, I think Jumpluff really pulled off its design and really brings something new to the collection of Pokémon.

Comfey

GatoDelFuego

GatoDelFuego

Comfey is alright, I guess. There's almost no way to avoid comparing it to Klefki... but at least Comfey looks way cooler. That long swish of green hair? Amazing. There's really not anything to say about its design. Ever seen literally any flower lei before? End of story. Comfey has really good competitive prospects, though. Super-Prankster for healing moves? Boy, that sounds totally balanced. As long as it doesn't get Swagger and Thunder Wave... I can already picture calls for Skillflower to be banned.

Mudsdale

GatoDelFuego

GatoDelFuego

Mudsdale is one of my favorite Pokémon designs. Sure, it might be very close to a plain horse, but the little things make a big difference. I don't really get why it has dreadlocks, but the mane looks badass. This Pokémon just oozes muscle and power. It's 8 feet tall (2.4 meters) and weighs more than a ton, so you know it's got to be strong. That's almost as heavy as Groudon, the heaviest Pokémon of all time! With an ability like Stamina, we could be seeing the next Hippowdon, which has made plenty of impact as a defensive tank. Mudsdale will definitely have a powerful Earthquake on its moveset, and it will be able to support with Stealth Rock too. Imagine switching Mudsdale in on a resisted Stone Edge, gaining a Defense boost, and smacking the next Pokémon that comes in with an attack. You better take it down quick, because it's definitely going to want to stick around. The only question remains is whether it will have any recovery options... I certainly hope so, because I'd love to see this thing in OU.
