Back in the old days of 2009, the titular question was quite commonplace, as the now-standard Team Preview did not yet exist. This project aims to bring back some of those deductive teambuilding exercises updated to the modern generation. Hopefully, the process of trying to figure out the right way to finish a team will aid the community in general building and playing skills, and teach you to use team preview effectively.

Each week, I will post a team that is entirely completed; moves, EVs, items, and all; except for one Pokemon which will be left out. Using your knowledge of the metagame, posters may then suggest full sets that they think would best complete the team. It's essential that you suggest an entire set, as it can be fairly clear that the last Pokemon may be Landorus-T any given popular threat, but as that final Pokemon needs to patch up any remaining holes, the devil is in the details to find the best way to round out the team. In that submission, the poster should explain their thought process to convince people to give them their vote. This phase of the week will also serve as the discussion phase, allowing anyone who feels something may have been left out of a nomination to add their input, and also for people to state some pros and cons they have seen in nominations preceding their post. This should hopefully allow for a more informed next step:

After a few days have passed to allow full discussion of the submissions, the voting round will begin and anyone may vote for whichever person they believe best completed the posted team. The person whose submission wins the popular vote will be the winner of the week, and be added to the Hall of Fame. Once the decision has been made, the builder of the original team will be given a chance to reveal the true final Pokemon and their reasoning behind that decision.

RULES:
1. Standard forum rules apply, so no flaming, antagonizing, or judging other people's submissions outside of constructive criticisms.
2. No move or item slashes in your set submissions - you can't have more than one item or more than 4 moves in battle, so you can't have them here either.
3. Only one nomination per person, per round. If you believe there are multiple good "lasts", then just pick whichever you think is best.
4. No changing the other members of the team, including sets. The last will have been picked based on the given sets, so your suggestion should do the same. If you have a couple small things that you think could help, you may mention them, just don't tear apart the provided team.
5. Voting for your own nomination is NOT allowed.
6. Please PM me if you have a team that you would like to be featured in this project! The winner of the week before will always have precedence in providing the next team, but they may elect to not do so.
7. No stealing of ideas. For example, if someone else has already posted a bulky Thundurus set and you think that a different spread on that same Thundurus would fit better, tough. However, if the sets are different enough that they clearly serve different roles, multiple nominations may be made for the same Pokemon. Use your judgment on this one, I will not hesitate to make you change your nom if it is too similar to a preceding one.
8. Reservation posts are allowed, but after 1 hour they will expire.
9. Failure to abide by any of the above rules may get you barred from future contributions

The team focuses around a Protect Mega Kangaskhan clean, and every member of the team is aimed at removing threats to its success. Suicune provides crucial speed control with Tailwind and beats both Landorus-T and Mega Diancie. Hydreigon takes on pesky Ghost-types and bulky Steels that can take a +2 Return. Infernape brings Fake Out to make up for Mega Kangaskhan lacking the move, and demolishes Ferrothorn and Amoonguss. An Amoonguss of its own allows this team some redirection to facilitate the Mega Kangaskhan sweep, with a Sitrus Berry so that Mega Kangaskhan can side PuP....

But what's their last?

Reserving Aegislash

Actual Submission:

Aegislash @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 252 HP / 68 Def / 108 SpA / 80 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shadow Ball
- Flash Cannon
- Wide Guard
- King's Shield

Ok so, I feel this Aegislash set would be an asset to this team. The evs look... odd, but let me explain them. The 252 hp is needed for the bulk in shield form so Aegis can do its job. The weird looking defense evs are there since I can see Talonflame giving the team a bit of trouble(not too much since Suicune is there, but still pretty threatening), and with them, it is guaranteed to live an adamant life orb flareblitz from Talon 100% of the time, making it a fair option vs. Talon teams for its potential to 1v1 said threat. The 80 speed evs are there since so it can outspeed base 110 speed mons under tailwind, a lot of which are pretty threatening, such as Latios, M-Metagross, and Especially M-Diancie, all of which it beats. The rest is thrown in Special Attack so it doesn't hit piss weak. I realize this is still a fairly weak Aegi spread, but that is where weakness policy comes in(not that it isnt standard anyways). With weakness policy, it has the potential to beat a lot of really threatening mons to the team 1v1, which the team of course really appreciates. I also happen to notice a late game scarf Lando-T really cleans shop with earthquake, which is why I added wide guard over some coverage option to help that match up, as well as really helping one of the teams worst match ups in general, which is a fast M-Gardevoir. Fast Mega-Garde, such as the one on n10sit's pretty widely known team, is a super bad match up to the current 5 members. The combination of fairy and psychic coverage severely dents if not faints every single one of the 5 current mons , and to top it off outspeeds each and every current member(the reason why I said fast Garde in particular). Aegis, whilst not outspeeding it, offers super effective coverage vs M-Garde while also offering wide guard support to protect all the team members from Garde's wretched screams, which the team desperately needs. Due to this I feel an Aegislash set like this, or at least one very similar to it, is the best fit for this teams last slot.

ps. I apologize for the long winded explanation. Its just things like this need to have thought put into them, and I wanted my post to reflect that!

Reserving Lando-T
645-therian.png

originally, I was considering this set, to bluff scarf and be able to have the versatility to swap moves, especially under tailwind.

expert belt (Landorus-Therian) (M) @ Expert Belt
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Stone Edge
- Knock Off
- Earthquake
- Protect

But then I realized I only wanted to use expert belt because it was cool, not that it was better for the team necessarily.

The team really suffers from a lack of speed, so there's no need for inventiveness when you can just use standard sets lol.

Landorus-Therian @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Superpower
- U-turn

from the analysis: "Landorus-T can fit well on any kind of team due to having a unique assortment of niches that lets it function in both offensive and subtle supportive roles while at the same time causing little or unnoticeable overlap synergy-wise." lol
The team, built to support Kang, really benefits from lando's intimidate. This team's ground immune (hydreigon) dies to opposing lando-T's superpower's and u-turns, and basically opposing Lando-T give this team a lot of trouble. Stone Edge is for the potential KO on Thundurus, since both offensive and support thundy's give this team a lot of trouble in general. The team also seemed M-Diancie and Talon weak, and Lando-T added checks to these two very well. There's really not much else to say that isn't incredibly obvious.
Standard Lando-T with stone edge really fits on this team. There's a reason why doge is the most splashable mon I guess, wouldn't be surprised if it is chosen every single week for this competition (unless it's already on the team).

Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

IVs: 0 Atk

Latios is an Amoonguss and Keldeo killer, along with a secondary fighting check. It also provides a check to Kyurem-B (but not a switch in) as it's able to OHKO it with Drco Meteor and can break its sub with Psychock. Recover allows is to stay healthy so it can continue to check intimidate + amoonguss.

This team is sitting in that mediocre speed range and just looks like Latios and Lando will fuck shit up if suicune cant come into play. So my 6th mon must improve the Latios match up and improve the Lando match up and preferable ground immune, because only 1 ground immune who gets killed by both latios and lando.
Also fighting types look like they could be a problem for kang, hydre, and even suicune. So I got to improve fighting match up. Preferably with intimate/wisp/ghost
Like I said this team's speed is an issue. I want a mon to be at that 110 mark or offer some great speed control TW/icywind/twave
Being that the fire type is frail and neutral to fairy moves and that all the only hyper voice resist is weak amoonguss I want a steel or a strong sludge bomb
finally a trick room check would be nice

Gengar gives me the 110 speed, the fighting immune, and ground immune that I felt like this team needed

- Icy Wind - Gives me that speed control and makes it difficult for Latios and Lando to switch in
- Will-O-Wisp - Adds another way for me to check the Landos and Kangs
- Sludge Bomb - This is the hard hitter against fairies
- Shadow Ball - My strong move to hit Latios and TR setters with

Looks like KangaSharp to me

So... standard LO Bisharp. You know the set. 252/252 Sucker Knock Iron Head Tect.

In case it wasn't clear, the nomination phase is also meant to be a discussion phase - If you feel that someone else has already written about your preferred last Pokemon, you can post to talk about anything you feel may have been missed or discuss pros / cons to the options already listed. The OP will be edited to reflect this, so carry on everyone :]

I'll try to spearhead some discussion I guess. I am of the opinion that the only potential mons for the last slot are aegi(hence why I did it) and scarf lando. Spoiler incase you havent somehow figured it out: The team is incredibly garde weak. Aegi is the obvious solution( if you want to know why, read my post above!) and I can personally see a scarf lando working here since its a good mon in general, provides intimidate which the team lacks, deals with some problem mons like m-metagross and m-diancie, and provides a way to deal nice damage to gardevoir. Lando+kang is probs enough to deal with a garde if played correctly, but honestly I think aegi is by far the best solution to all the problems this team faces.

edit: Also, bisharp is honestly so bad on this team. TR is covered as is, double dark isnt exactly ideal, and it makes the team kang weak, since it comes in on half the mons and then fucks shit up.

Looking at the team composition, I think it's highly likely that the last is a fast Pokemon. This is because the 5 we have now is pretty slow and very reliant on Tailwind from Suicune getting up. As much as possible, a team shouldn't be totally reliant on their speed control in order to have a Speed advantage; rather, a team should have at least that one fast mon to serve as a Speed safety net like Fast Thund, MAero (if building around it), MGar, etc. Opposing teams with faster threats of their own can just keep pounding at this team and if Suicune gets overloaded with too much pressure, that's one step closer to a loss. From the top of my head, the team has a bit of a notable weakness to the following: Mega Diancie, which just clicks Diamond Storm to apply pressure; Mega Metagross and Latios, both of which can just click the appropriate attacks without getting threatened by anything; Talonflame, which can just click Brave Bird; and Mega Gardevoir, which can just click Hyper Voice. Of course, due to the nature of the team, the last doesn't necessarily have to be a hard switchin or counter to the said threats—it can simply be a check that compliments the team on a bigger picture; a defensive approach to an otherwise offensive team can end up not actually fixing some actual problems to the build and might end up being a band-aid fix to a bullet hole.

Considering the stuff I said above, my submission is Offensive 3 Attacks Thundurus

I believe this is set is a decent last for the 5 because not only can it give the team the Speed that it needs, letting it keep up the pace and offense that it wants, but also it serves as a (situational) check to many things that trouble it such as Mega Diancie, Latios, and Talonflame. It also gives the team another way of handling Water-types and other threats by the situation thanks to its high Speed and general power. The moveset, item, and spread is obvious aside for HP Ice over Thunder Wave; I chose it for this set because the team doesn't really "need" the Thunder Wave support much and would rather have more ways to hit Dragon-types and Landorus-T (whether in Tailwind or on a prediction) without switching out and forfeiting momentum.

Some things I noticed when looking at the team were that it had minimal answers to Gardevoir, Latios, Mega Diancie while also looking for the "Speed Safety Net" as Memoric outlined above. To me, Scarf Genesect really fits this slot well because it will outspeed almost everything you come across, easily revenges the Mega Fairy types and can also pick up momentum with U-turn which is always helpful.

Genesect @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Download
EVs: 252 Atk / 64 SpA / 192 Spe
Hasty Nature
- U-turn

- Ice Beam
- Extreme Speed/Explosion

Pretty standard Genesect set with the exception of Extreme Speed. The team is kinda talon weak and not that genesect should be a counter to it but it lets it pick off Talon in a pinch.

Nothing much to say here but a steel in last slot seems ideal as it betters matchup against latios, gardevoir, kyurem black and mega diancie. Teams in general value the support value that jirachi provides. Though im not quite too sure im supposed to post about it due to it being suspected currently but oh well, here's a shot. Follow me redirects a move so that its teammate avoids unnecessary damage and can get some free damage off on an opponent. Or mega khan could easily click on PUP and there you go, a threatening mon with a +2 boost. Icy Wind for speed control, i guess thunder wave is an option too but due to all the landorus therian's running around, its nice to catch them on a potential switch. Protect is there for some general scouting.

I've had a few complaints about the reservations system, so I'm planning on removing it for next week. However, I wanted to give you guys a chance to weigh in in case there was an angle I have yet to consider.

Also, any reservations that have been posted are technically expired so if you want to write up a mon that's reserved, go ahead.

Ok so I pm'd tree with an idea and he said to post it here so... yeah.

I feel like the reservation system has benefits, but 24 hours is way to long of a time to keep a mon w/o others being able to touch it. My proposal is we make the reservation time just an hour or two. That way you can reserve a mon and have a chance to write your submission without having to worry about someone beating you to it. But at the same time, it isnt a whole day where no one else has dibs which is really not fair. So yeah, make reservation time just an hour or two is my proposal!

So sorry this is late, I promise I will not be making a habit of it, but now we're gonna move on to the voting phase! Please post your vote for the ONE Pokemon that you think would best fill out the team, and as a quick reminder you may not vote for your own entry.

Is their last...
