Tapu Bulu @ Assault Vest
Ability: Grassy Surge
EVs: 248 HP / 60 Atk / 56 SpD / 144 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Horn Leech
- Wood Hammer
- Superpower
- Nature's Madness / Stone Edge

Explanation: This pokemon has recently found itself getting spammed all over the OU ladder for its ability to check a wide range of threats while still having recovery thanks to grassy terrain. Horn Leech, Wood hammer and Superpower are standards while natures madness or stone edge are options for luring wouldbe checks.

Goodluck this week and happy posting

Kartana as a Check

Kartana @ Grassium Z / Fightinum Z
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Leaf Blade
- Smart Strike
- Sacred Sword

With a 4X resistance to Grass, Kartana takes nothing from Tapu Bulu's main STAB move. It's weak to Superpower, however it doesn't OHKO Kartana like other sets would without much attack investment, leaving it with around 30% after Grassy Terrain healing. In return, Kartana can either kill it with Smart Strike or set up Swords Dance on a switch and kill the rest of the team. Under Grassy Terrain, Kartana is able to defeat would-be defensive answers with a boosted Leaf Blade.

60+ Atk Tapu Bulu Wood Hammer vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Kartana in Grassy Terrain: 55-65 (21.2 - 25%) -- possible 5HKO
60+ Atk Tapu Bulu Superpower vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Kartana: 198-234 (76.4 - 90.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Kartana Smart Strike vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Tapu Bulu: 260-308 (75.8 - 89.7%) -- 12.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
+2 252 Atk Kartana Leaf Blade vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Zapdos in Grassy Terrain: 321-378 (83.8 - 98.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
(last calc is to show how stupidly powerful Kartana is in Grassy Terrain)

Mega Venusaur can esaily take every Tapu Bulu's attack (except Nature's Madness, but that can be recovered with Synthesis) and then answer with an almost deadly Sludge Bomb

60+ Atk Tapu Bulu Stone Edge vs. 248 HP / 88 Def Venusaur-Mega: 81-96 (22.3 - 26.4%) -- possible 5HKO

Reserving Sludge Bomb Av Tangrowth
AV Tangrowth as a Counter
tangrowth.gif

Tangrowth @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 16 Def / 240 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Giga Drain / Leaf Storm
- Knock Off
- Sludge Bomb
- Hidden Power [Ice] / [Fire]

Tangrowth can come in on Tapu Bulu on any of its attacks, and force it out with the threat of Knock or surprise it with a Sludge Bomb. Tangrowth does however need to be careful of Natures Madness slowly chipping, but due to both the nature of Regenerator and Grassey Terrain providing recovery and boosting Giga Drain, this chip can be worked around very easily. With the risk of being Knocked Off, reducing Bulus ability to check special threats immensely, the next switch in will also have to either take a boosted Giga Drain, Knock Off or risk the Sludge Bomb poison, making Tangrowth also very difficult to switch into, abusing its ability to force out Bulu effectively and unlike Bulu. This spread allows Tangrowth to not only wall Av Bulu, but somewhat check Z-Varients too, avoiding any chance of Ohko from Z-Stone Edge Varients and having a high chance to live AoP both after Rocks, but also eating the Bloom Doom before Rocks and ohkoing in return. (Main purpose of spread is to check rain better)
60+ Atk Tapu Bulu Horn Leech vs. 252 HP / 16+ Def Tangrowth in Grassy Terrain: 65-77 (16 - 19%) -- possible 8HKO

60+ Atk Tapu Bulu Wood Hammer vs. 252 HP / 16+ Def Tangrowth in Grassy Terrain: 105-123 (25.9 - 30.4%) -- 1.9% chance to 4HKO

60+ Atk Tapu Bulu Wood Hammer vs. 252 HP / 16+ Def Tangrowth in Grassy Terrain: 105-123 (25.9 - 30.4%) -- 99.2% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock

60+ Atk Tapu Bulu Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 16+ Def Tangrowth: 78-92 (19.3 - 22.7%) -- possible 5HKO after Stealth Rock

60+ Atk Tapu Bulu Superpower vs. 252 HP / 16+ Def Tangrowth: 93-110 (23 - 27.2%) -- 0.8% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock

0 SpA Tangrowth Giga Drain vs. 252 HP / 56 SpD Assault Vest Tapu Bulu in Grassy Terrain: 43-51 (12.5 - 14.8%) (5.3 - 6.3% recovered)

0 SpA Tangrowth Sludge Bomb vs. 252 HP / 56 SpD Assault Vest Tapu Bulu: 184-220 (53.4 - 63.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+2 252 Atk Tapu Bulu Continental Crush (180 BP) vs. 252 HP / 16+ Def Tangrowth: 290-342 (71.7 - 84.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

+2 252 Atk Tapu Bulu All-Out Pummeling (190 BP) vs. 252 HP / 16+ Def Tangrowth: 306-361 (75.7 - 89.3%) -- 12.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

+2 252 Atk Tapu Bulu Bloom Doom (190 BP) vs. 252 HP / 16+ Def Tangrowth in Grassy Terrain: 344-405 (85.1 - 100.2%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO

tl:dr Tangrowth is unhappy that Tapu Bulu has stole its role. Tangrowth spits poison at Bulu. Sticks and stones may break my bones, but regen broken af so it dont matter

Gengar as a counter.

Gengar @ Life Orb
Ability: Cursed Body
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Wave
- Taunt
- Focus Blast

With no hazards up, Gengar can switch in on any of AV Bulu's moves. Though Gengar is a rather frail mon, even Wood Hammer only does 77 - 90.8% (and even with rocks up has only a 25% chance to OHKO), and Gengar comfortably OHKOs with Sludge Wave: 252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Sludge Wave vs. 248 HP / 60 SpD Assault Vest Tapu Bulu: 530-629 (154.5 - 183.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO. Losing levitate may have not been great for Gengar, but being grounded now means that Gengar gains recovery from grassy terrain, which makes the damage taken from Wood Hammer - or whatever move Bulu uses - far less devastating. As Shadow Ball has such great neutral coverage, if you predict the switch then you can normally take a big chunk out of whatever comes in with Gengar's other STAB.

I think that any Gengar build can OHKO Bulu providing its running Sludge Wave (0 SpA Gengar Sludge Wave vs. 248 HP / 60 SpD Assault Vest Tapu Bulu: 336-400 (97.9 - 116.6%) -- 87.5% chance to OHK, but what maniac would run that?). I went for life orb as its got decent power and utility.

Mega Latias can munch all of bulu's hits and set up on it indefinitely.

60+ Atk Tapu Bulu Wood Hammer vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Latias-Mega in Grassy Terrain: 120-141 (32.9 - 38.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
60+ Atk Tapu Bulu Wood Hammer vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Latias-Mega: 80-94 (21.9 - 25.8%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Stealth Rock

Mega Charizard-X as a Check

Charizard @ Charizardite X
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Flare Blitz
- Dragon Claw
- Earthquake
- Roost

Due to its decent physical bulk (especially for an offensive 'mon) and 4x resistance to grass moves Zard-X can freely switch in on Tapu Bulu's STAB moves and force it out as Flare Blitz OHKO'S:

252 Atk Tough Claws Charizard-Mega-X Flare Blitz vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Tapu Bulu: 452-534 (131.7 - 155.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Demonstration of Zard-X's bulk:

60+ Atk Tapu Bulu Horn Leech vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Charizard-Mega-X in Grassy Terrain: 40-47 (13.4 - 15.8%) -- possibly the worst move ever

60+ Atk Tapu Bulu Wood Hammer vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Charizard-Mega-X in Grassy Terrain: 64-75 (21.5 - 25.2%) -- possible 5HKO

60+ Atk Tapu Bulu Superpower vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Charizard-Mega-X: 114-135 (38.3 - 45.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Zard-X is fairly annoyed by Nature's Madness but it's more concerned about Stone Edge which does a fairly large amount to it:

60+ Atk Tapu Bulu Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Charizard-Mega-X: 190-224 (63.9 - 75.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

And after Stealth Rock it has a small chance to OHKO:

60+ Atk Tapu Bulu Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Charizard-Mega-X: 190-224 (63.9 - 75.4%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

If Stealth Rock is up Zard-X becomes a shakier check to Tapu Bulu. Another issue is that switching into a Stone Edge followed by Flare Blitz recoil can end up KOing Zard-X, forcing a trade with the opponent. Finally Zard-X has to be in mega form to switch in somewhat safely as regular Charizard gets demolished by Stone Edge:

60+ Atk Tapu Bulu Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Charizard: 512-604 (172.3 - 203.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Time for me to try my hand

Skarmory as a counter
1515455822719.png

Skarmory @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
- Roost
- Defog
- Spikes
- Brave Bird
Thanks to four times resisting its main stab move, and taking pitiful damage from superpower. Skarmory can easily tank any hit from our angry guardian behemoth and precede to heavily dent it with Brave Bird. And while Nature's Madness looks troubling for it, it can't even put Skarmory in range of Superpower, meaning Tapu Bulu can't break it without using Nature's Madness once the switch in, and then another time. Skarmory also walls any non Nature's Madness sets. And that doesn't even take into account roost, which destroys that plan

Calcs for Proof
56+ Atk Tapu Bulu Superpower vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 71-84 (21.3 - 25.2%) -- 99% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock
56+ Atk Tapu Bulu Stone Edge vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 59-70 (17.7 - 21%) -- guaranteed 5HKO after Stealth Rock

0- Atk Skarmory Brave Bird vs. 249 HP / 0 Def Tapu Bulu: 170-204 (49.5 - 59.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Grassy Terrain recovery

Ability: Technician
EVs: 248 HP / 64 Atk / 124 Def / 16 SpD / 56 Spe
Impish Nature
- Swords Dance
- Bullet Punch
- Roost
- U-turn

Due to its types resistance, scizor, can manually switch in against Tapu bulu and resist to wood hammer, super power, horn leech and stone edge.
as u can see:

Scizor-Mega:

60 Atk Tapu Bulu Horn Leech vs. 248 HP / 124 Def Scizor-Mega in Grassy Terrain: 27-32 (7.8 - 9.3%) -- possibly the worst move ever
60 Atk Tapu Bulu Wood Hammer vs. 248 HP / 124 Def Scizor-Mega in Grassy Terrain: 43-51 (12.5 - 14.8%) -- possibly the worst move ever
60 Atk Tapu Bulu Superpower vs. 248 HP / 124 Def Scizor-Mega: 78-92 (22.7 - 26.8%) -- possible 5HKO
60 Atk Tapu Bulu Stone Edge vs. 248 HP / 124 Def Scizor-Mega: 65-77 (18.9 - 22.4%) -- possible 6HKO

Scizor:

60 Atk Tapu Bulu Horn Leech vs. 248 HP / 124 Def Scizor in Grassy Terrain: 35-42 (10.2 - 12.2%) -- possibly the worst move ever
60 Atk Tapu Bulu Wood Hammer vs. 248 HP / 124 Def Scizor in Grassy Terrain: 56-66 (16.3 - 19.2%) -- possible 8HKO
60 Atk Tapu Bulu Superpower vs. 248 HP / 124 Def Scizor: 101-119 (29.4 - 34.6%) -- 100% chance to 4HKO
60 Atk Tapu Bulu Stone Edge vs. 248 HP / 124 Def Scizor: 84-99 (24.4 - 28.8%) -- possible 5HKO

And Scizor-Mega can set Sword Dance easily and use Bullet Punch to OKHO Tapu Bulu:

+2 64+ Atk Technician Scizor-Mega Bullet Punch vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Tapu Bulu: 374-444 (109 - 129.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

But also without Sword Dance, scizor does a lot of damages to Bulu due its stab move and its ability:

64+ Atk Technician Scizor-Mega Bullet Punch vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Tapu Bulu: 188-224 (54.8 - 65.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Moreover due its low speed, if u predict a switch, u can use Scizor also to use U-Turn and gain a free switch.

In the case Tapu bulu uses Nature's madness , Scizor has also a nice answer, and it is Roost, and it helps scizor to recover its HP.

So in my opinion scizor is a nice answer against bulu thanks its moves, what do u think about it?

6. We allow reservation of Pokemon in this thread. However, please write up your post within 6 hours of the reservation. This is to ensure that the project doesn't become a race of who gets to reserve the best check / counter first. After 6 hours has elapsed and you still have not typed it out, your reservation will be nullified.
Jord-e Sorry, but he is allowed too since it was over 6hrs D:

Sorry for the inactivity. RL hasbeen hectic recently. Will update the thread tomorrow evening. I know there's no voting this round but I feel Kyu-B has been on for too long as is so I'll decide the winner myself. Anyway, the Victim for this Week is Hazard Setter Ferrothorn.

1516356828713.png

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 48 Def / 208 SpD
Careful Nature
- Spikes / Stealth Rock
- Leech Seed
- Power Whip
- Knock Off / Protect / Gyro Ball / Thunder Wave / Hidden Power Fire

Everyone knows what Ferrothorn can do; it comes in with its resistances and either sets up Spikes or annoy you with Leech Seed. It can also Knock Off your held item, Protect for extra Leftovers recovery or punish things for coming in recklessly (such as Kartana) with Thunder Wave.Ferrothorn is also known to carry Hidden Power Fire to hit Kartana who comes in freely on it. When nominating checks and counters to Ferrothorn, it is important to take into consideration how to either minimize the layers of hazard it sets or outright eliminate it from the match.

Heatran basically doesn't mind anything from Ferrothorn outside of Knock Off (which is why u can use Firium Z, too) and can outright OHKO or threaten out Ferrothorn immediately. In a 1v1 situation it can also use Taunt to effectively stop Ferrothorn from setting up hazards or Leech Seeding Heatran.
8 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 252 HP / 208+ SpD Ferrothorn: 372-436 (105.6 - 123.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

EVs: 248 HP / 20 Atk / 136 Def / 16 SpA / 32 SpD / 56 Spe
Impish Nature
- Bullet Punch
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Roost
- Defog

M.Scizor has nothing to fear from Ferrothorn, 4x resisting its Grass stab, taking next to nothing from both Gyro and Knock Off, and taking minimal damage from Hp Fire, M.Scizor can come in and out right beat it with Hp Fire itself as Ferrothorn lacks reliable recovery, and being able to Roost off any damage it does and remove all Hazards set up, out stalling the Ferrothorn.
Hp Fire is primarly there to check opposing M.Scizors and Kartanas, with the 16 Spatk investment allowing it to always 2hko opposing 248Hp M.Scizors. The 20 Atk invesment allows it to 2hko Tyranitar, minimising the damage taken from Band while 32 SpDef allows you to take a Hp Fire from max Atk M.Diancie after rocks, and have a good chance at living Hp Fire from both Scarf Magnezone and Lele after rocks, allowing you to get off last ditch Defogs. 56 Spe is for M.Mawile, allowing you to 3hko avoiding a third hit. Lastly 136 Def hits a jump point.

In all honesty, I only chose M.Scizor to show off this fire Ev spread, youre probably better off using this Ev Spread as it can check Physical threats far bettter, but c'mon, doesnt it look so cool :o

Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Substitute
- Thunderbolt
- Flash Cannon
- Hidden Power [Fire]

Magnezone is notorious for its ability to trap many steel types in the tier, which includes ferrothorn. Magnezone's typing means that offensively ferrothorn will not pressure it, and unlike most other pokemon will not have its item removed if ferrothorn decides to use knock off, with magnezone reliably 2hkos ferrothorn in return. Furthermore, due to magnezone's ability to trap many steel types that frequent the tier, it means pokemon that ferrothorn would traditionally wall such as ash-greninja, tapu lele, tapu koko and many more will overall have better matchups, and while this set does take away the z-move user of a team, magnezone's other sets can still reliably trap and kill ferrothorn.

However, unlike other picks such as mega sableye, magnezone lacks the ability to prevent ferrothorn from setting up hazards(although it does pressure and punish it for doing so), and also cannot remove hazards from the field. As well as this, while magnezone can switchin to ferrothorn, it will more than likely take damage from hazards, and if leech seeded on the switch, in conjuction with protect or even by itself, ferrothorn will chip magnezone significantly.

Kartana @ Fightinium Z
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Leaf Blade
- Sacred Sword
- Defog / Substitute

Z-Sacred Sword OHKOs Ferrothorn activating Kartana's Beast Boost.
Defog removes the hazards after that Ferrothorn is removed. Substitute create a free momentum against every Ferrothorn move (and scouts HP Fire)
252 Atk Kartana All-Out Pummeling (175 BP) vs. 252 HP / 48 Def Ferrothorn: 374-440 (106.2 - 125%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Leftovers recovery

Ferro literally has nothing on Zapdos. Everything it carries is resisted except Knock Off, which hurts this much (read: little):
0 Atk Ferrothorn Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 248 HP / 240+ Def Zapdos: 54-64 (14 - 16.7%) -- possible 9HKO after Leftovers recovery

In return, Heat Wave is a clean 2HKO, and can get rid of any hazards with Defog. Also doesn't care about Twave for obvious reasons.

Charizard Y fears nothing from Ferrothorn except the odd thunder wave, which has little effect on the matchup as Charizard Y still outspeeds after Thunder Wave. Afterwards Flamethrower OHKOs Ferrothorn with little problem. Even after Stealth Rock, Ferrothorn still can't OHKO allowing Charizard Y, allowing Charizard Y to roost off any damage and win the matchup. However, Charizard Y can't defog the hazards away, but that doesn't affect the matchup

Calcs: 252 SpA Charizard Flamethrower vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 400-472 (113.6 - 134%) -- guaranteed OHKO
