Pokémon Regidrago

1685576581819.png

Type: Dragon

Stats: 200 HP / 100 Atk / 50 Def / 100 SpA / 50 SpD / 80 Spe | 580

Ability: Dragon's Maw

Notable Moves:
- Outrage
- Dragon Claw
- Earthquake
- Hammer Arm
- Crunch
- Fire Fang
- Thunder Fang
- Ice Fang
- Dragon Energy
- Draco Meteor
- Dragon Pulse
- Earth Power
- Dragon Dance

Pros:
- Dragon's Maw essentially gives its STAB moves a 2.25 instead of a 1.5 boost, making it a lot more threatening than its middling offenses would suggest.
- The above factor combined with the high BP of moves such as Dragon Energy, Draco Meteor, and Outrage make it hard to switch into.
- The addition of Earthquake and Earth Power gives it actual good coverage that makes it much harder to wall, and especially makes special sets more viable.
- Its bulk is surprisingly good. 200/50/50 bulk is equivalent to 99 mixed bulk, near Mew levels.
- Can run either physical or special with its equal offenses.
- Access to Dragon Dance can allow it to sweep unexpected teams.
Cons:
- Quite slow for an offensive Pokemon. While it can boost itself with Dragon Dance, this initial speed hurts Choice Specs sets and even sweeping sets sometimes require multiple boosts to outspeed an entire team.
- Pure Dragon is not good at all offensively, relying heavily on its high BP moves and coverage.
- Vulnerable to status and entry hazards.
- Recieves a lot of competition from other Dragons like Baxcalibur, Dragapult and Garchomp which are similar in strength while also having better speed and typings.

Terastal Potential:
- Tera Dragon is an obvious choice to make its Dragon-type moves even stronger. Generally better on Choice Specs sets to further boost the immediate power.
- Alternatively, Tera Steel can be run to turn all its weaknesses into resistances. Could be better on Dragon Dance sets to set up easier, as its less reliant on immediate power as opposed to Choice Specs sets.

Potential Sets:

Dragon Dance Sweeper
Regidrago @ Leftovers / Life Orb / Dragon Fang
Ability: Dragon's Maw
Tera Type: Dragon / Steel
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Outrage / Dragon Claw
- Earthquake
- Substitute / Thunder Fang / Tera Blast
- Dragon Dance

Fairly simple set. You click Dragon Dance and attempt to sweep. Outrage is extremely strong, but Dragon Claw can be used instead if you don't want to be locked in. Earthquake is near perfect coverage, with only Enamorus and Corviknight being able to resist both. Substitute can be used along with Leftovers to prevent Regidrago from being statused, while also providing free recovery for future Substitutes. Thunder Fang can also be used to hit Corviknight, alone with Enamorus and Azumarill. Otherwise, Tera Blast can be run with Tera Steel to hit any other fairies. In terms of items, either Life Orb or Dragon Fang can be used if Thunder Fang or Tera Blast is run. Life Orb provides more power to all its moves, but hurts its longetivity. Meanwhile, Dragon Fang provides even more strength to its Dragon-type moves. Jolly nature is run to outspeed Modest Dragapult after a single Dragon Dance.

Special Wallbreaker
Regidrago @ Choice Specs
Ability: Dragon's Maw
Tera Type: Dragon
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Dragon Energy
- Draco Meteor
- Dragon Pulse
- Earth Power

Rather then attempt to sweep, this Regidrago set focuses on wallbreaking. Dragon Energy is its most powerful move, but should only be used at very high HP. At lower HP, Draco Meteor is used as its most powerful move instead. Dragon Pulse on the other hand is its most reliable move due to lacking any drawbacks, being the best option if Regidrago doesn't need an absurdly powerful move to do a lot of damage to the target. Lastly, Earth Power is coverage for anything that can handle its Dragon-type moves, especially Steels. Modest nature is run to maximize the damage output, as it doesn't outspeed any significant walls with Timid.

Other Options:
- Choice Band sets may seem like an option without relying on Dragon Dance for power, but they're inferior to Choice Specs sets due to the weaker STAB moves on the physical end.

Overall Thoughts:
Regidrago got some pretty significant buffs even if it was only the addition of Ground-type coverage. Regidrago always felt like a Pokemon that had a lower movepool than necessary, especially on the special side, as it wouldn't be broken with it unlike Regieleki. However, I still think this isn't enough to make it OU viable when there's already a ton of strong Dragons that aren't as slow and have dual typings, on top of having higher offenses to make their other moves more powerful. But, I do think this mon could have a chance in UU, or at least RU.

On Dragon Dance sets, Thunder Fang is much more useful than Fire Fang, with Ferrothorn and Kartana MIA and Scizor not being very good. Earthquake is a more effective move against the majority of Steel types, like Magearna, Kingambit, Gholdengo, Heatran.

With Thunder Fang, you can target a few troublesome fairies and achieve things like these
+1 252+ Atk Life Orb Regidrago Thunder Fang vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Enamorus: 338-400 (116.9 - 138.4%)

+1 252+ Atk Life Orb Regidrago Thunder Fang vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Enamorus-Therian: 172-203 (49 - 57.8%)

+1 252+ Atk Life Orb Regidrago Thunder Fang vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Azumarill: 304-359 (75.2 - 88.8%)

+1 252+ Atk Life Orb Regidrago Thunder Fang vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Corviknight: 177-211 (44.3 - 52.8%)

Explosion is also worth considering if you are using DD Regidrago in Dragon spam teams since it can lure and OHKO nearly every relevant Fairy.

I changed the set. Thank you for your suggestion.

Scream Tail can survive... unless you go Tera Normal.

+1 252 Atk Tera Normal Regidrago Explosion vs. 120 HP / 0 Def Scream Tail: 514-606 (128.1 - 151.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

You probably shouldn't burn your Tera like this but it is hilarious.
