[SET COMMENTS]
- Choice Band Marshadow is one of the strongest wallbreakers, cleaners, and revenge killers in the tier, due to its unresisted and spammable STAB combo, access to high Base Power attacks, and powerful priority.
- Poltergeist is Marshadow’s strongest move, but comes with 90% accuracy and fails entirely when a Pokemon has been hit by Knock Off or used their item such as Meteor Beam Eternatus. Tera Ghost Poltergeist reaches a power level so high that outside of resists, Zygarde-C is the only Pokemon in the tier that can avoid a 2HKO.
- Spectral Thief has perfect accuracy and can steal boosts from slower Pokemon, such as a slow Dragon Dance Necrozma-DM set. Though a great move, Spectral Thief does come with an opportunity cost since Marshadow cannot drop Shadow Sneak nor its Fighting-type STAB move. Running Spectral Thief means that Marshadow is dropping either Poltergeist or a coverage move, this limits Marshadow’s wallbreaking capabilities or its ability to remove certain targets with its coverage.
- There are a variety of Pokemon 4x weak to the Ice-type in the tier that crumple to Ice Punch such as Zygarde, Mega Salamence and Rayquaza, while also 2HKOing Yveltal.
- In addition to OHKOing Ho-Oh, the Speed drop from Rock Tomb denies some Dragon Dance users the ability to boost their Speed if they see Marshadow as an opportunity to switch in and start boosting such as Mega Salamence, Arceus formes, and Necrozma-DM.
- Low Kick is Marshadow’s preferred Fighting-type STAB move. Due to the heavy nature of the tier, Low Kick is functionally a 120 base power move.
- Shadow Sneak is what makes Marshadow a potent revenge killer as it hits deceptively hard due to Technician, and several threatening Pokemon, such as Necrozma-DM, Lunala, Deoxys-A, and Mega Mewtwo Y. It is of such significance that Pokemon such as Mega Mewtwo Y and Ultra Necrozma are EVed specifically to live Shadow Sneak from full HP though they are OHKOed if Marshadow elects to Tera Ghost or if entry hazards are up.
- With Adamant, Marshadow no longer outspeeds fully invested base 120 Speed Pokemon like Arceus formes or Palkia-O, but is also outsped by any Eternatus sets that speed creep fully Invested Arceus sets. The main damage thresholds gained in return are things like being able to 2HKO set-up Primal Groudon sets with Poltergeist, being guaranteed to OHKO uninvested Primal Kyogre with Low Kick, being able to OHKO offensive Necrozma-DM sets with Poltergeist, and OHKO uninvested Yveltal with Low Kick after Stealth Rock or sufficient Life Orb recoil.
- Tera Ghost allows Marshadow’s attacks to reach nuclear levels of damage with Poltergeist, OHKOing uninvested Primal Kyogre, Zacian-C, Palkia-O, and Calyrex-I.
- The best way to use this set is to first identify any Pokemon that could wall either Fighting or Ghost, and identify any offensive pokemon like Ultra Necrozma it might need to revenge kill with Shadow Sneak. The second step is to look for as many switch-in opportunities as possible, such as a predicted Ho-Oh Defog, a Marshadow locked into Low Kick or Rock Tomb, or an Arceus set using Extreme Speed. The third step is to just attack until Marshadow is walled by an immunity, Dondozo, or Ho-Oh. If the opponent has a Pokemon that can wall one STAB type, it can be predicted, for instance, predicting Arceus-Dark with Low Kick, or Giratina with Poltergeist. Marshadow's primary goal is to soften up defensive Pokemon to either sweep through later with Marshadow, or to bust through with other Pokemon. If you see a threatening offensive pokemon that would need revenge killed, prioritize keeping Marshadow healthy to be able to effectively revenge it later in the game.
- Marshadow compresses the roles of a wallbreaker, revenge killer, and cleaner in the end-game. It is one of the best anti-offense Pokemon due to its ability to steal stat boosts and alternatively kill such threats with Shadow Sneak. It appreciates entry hazard support whether it is from dedicated setters on hyper offense teams such as Deoxys-S or Glimmora, or Primal Groudon on balance teams.
- On hyper offense teams, Marshadow appreciates teammates which pressure defensive Pokemon like Zygarde-C, defensive Primal Groudon, or Dondozo. Good teammates include Life Orb Yveltal and Xerneas because they can pressure these defensive Pokemon with their strong special attacks, and Yveltal can force damage to stick by using Taunt to deny recovery.
- On balance teams, Marshadow likes teammates which can switch in to take hits aimed at Marshadow once it has scared out or KOed an opposing Pokemon such as Ho-Oh, Zygarde, Primal Groudon, and support Arceus formes.
