Tier changes remember!!

[Overview]

Kabutops returns to UU as a solid Pokemon with decent Attack and Defense stats relative to the rest of the tier. Access to Swords Dance and powerful dual STABs only increases its value, turning it into a fearsome sweeper. Alternatively, it can take on a more support-oriented role, using Stealth Rock and Rapid Spin to help its team. Its Rock / Water typing is a mixed blessing here: on one hand, a 4x resistance to Fire-type moves, particularly V-create and Flare Blitz, makes it a great check to Victini and Arcanine. This also helps since Fire-type powerhouses such as Darmanitan and Chandelure dropped into the UU tier. However, this typing leaves it with crippling weaknesses to common Ground-, Grass-, and Fighting-type attacks, and Kabutops's below average Special Defense compounds this issue further. Negatives aside, if you need an offensive force or a support Pokemon that also packs an attacking punch, look no further than Kabutops.

[SET]

move 1: Swords Dance
move 2: Waterfall
move 3: Stone Edge
move 4: Aqua Jet
item: Life Orb
ability: Swift Swim
nature: Jolly / Adamant
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

This set focuses on using rain support and Swords Dance to double Kabutops's Speed and Attack stats, allowing it to easily tear apart unprepared teams with its great dual STAB. Waterfall is the most reliable Water-type move in its arsenal, hitting a wide range of threats hard after the Swords Dance and rain boosts. Stone Edge allows Kabutops to hit opposing Water-, Grass-, and Dragon-types that resist Waterfall for neutral damage. This combo is enough to dent everything except Ferroseed and Quagsire, both of which tank the Water / Rock offensive combination with ease. Aqua Jet earns a place in the last slot for a variety of reasons: even if it is raining, Kabutops can circumvent its low Speed and attempt a late-game sweep as long as it has already nabbed a Swords Dance boost. The priority is also good insurance against revenge killing, allowing Kabutops to hit opponents hard before they can attack. Be sure to remember the power difference between Aqua Jet and Waterfall, however, and resist the urge to use it in situations where Kabutops comfortably outspeeds its opponent.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EVs provide the maximum Speed possible, as chances are you may occasionally need Kabutops outside of rain. Its base 80 Speed is usable, tying with other base 80s such as Mamoswine. 252 Attack EVs ensure Kabutops will hit as hard as possible, both before and after a Swords Dance boost. The choice of a Jolly or Adamant nature is clear with rain support: Adamant for maximum power, while Jolly is viable if you want extra insurance outside of rain, outpacing Adamant Heracross and standard Arcanine. If you don't intend to provide Kabutops with rain support, an EV spread of 72 HP / 252 Atk / 184 Spe with Weak Armor is certainly viable, as after being hit by a physical move, Kabutops will be able to outspeed notable threats such as Zapdos and Mew and KO them (though some prior damage may be required). Such an approach is less favorable, however, both because it is situational and the fact that Kabutops is frail.

Pokemon that set up Rain Dance are the primary teammates for Kabutops, as the rain boosts both its power and Speed. Accelgor is a great partner in this regard, as it has an extremely fast Rain Dance and resists the Grass-, Fighting-, and Ground-type moves that Kabutops is weak to. Furthermore, the ninja bug can use U-turn to gain momentum for Kabutops to take advantage of. Amoonguss is another great choice, as it 4x resists Grass-type moves and has its Fire-type weakness covered by Kabutops. It is also bulky enough to set up Rain Dance multiple times, benefits from the rain by having the aforementioned Fire-type weakness removed, and has Spore to do one of two things: put the opponent to sleep and set up Rain Dance safely, or summon the storms first, sleep the opponent, and give Kabutops a free switch-in. Offensively, Kingdra is a good partner, as it can smash holes in the opponent's team with its own powerful dual STAB and clear the way for Kabutops to sweep. Ludicolo gets a mention too, as it eliminates most of the physical walls that Kabutops has trouble getting past with its powerful special attacks. To get an idea of how fearsome Kabutops is in the rain, take the following into account: Grass-types such as Roserade and Shaymin, which originally outspeed and KO Kabutops, are swiftly KOed by a +2 Adamant Life Orb Stone Edge. Unaware Quagsire with a physically defensive spread is KOed by Adamant Life Orb- and rain-boosted Waterfall as well, and cannot damage Kabutops significantly, even with Earthquake. Hitmontop takes 93.8% - 110.5% from a +1 (after Intimidate) Adamant Life Orb Waterfall, and is hardly strong enough to KO with Mach Punch alone.

Unaware Quagsire and Water Absorb variants (if Kabutops doesn't have a boost already) are some of the best counters to Kabutops as long as there is no rain; physically defensive versions will laugh at Stone Edge and Waterfall. Roserade is therefore a good partner, as it can set up Spikes to ease Kabutops's KOs and eliminate Quagsire with its STAB Grass-type attacks. It also has decent synergy with Kabutops, 4x resisting the Grass-type moves directed at the shellfish. That said, opposing Grass-types, especially bulky ones such as Shaymin and Ferroseed, are troubling. They take little damage from either of Kabutops's STABs, and set up on or force Kabutops out. If you aren't using rain support, strong Fire-types such as Arcanine and Rotom-H are good for taking these out. Otherwise, strong Ice-types, such as Mamoswine and Weavile, and Flying-types, such as Tornadus, are better choices. These partners (bar Rotom-H) will in turn leave you walled by most bulky Water-types, so Electric-types such as Jolteon and Raikou are useful teammates as well. The ability to scout with Volt Switch is especially helpful, as it seizes the momentum and augments Kabutops's offensive pressure.

[SET]

move 2: Stealth Rock
move 3: Aqua Jet / Waterfall
move 4: Stone Edge / Rock Slide
item: Leftovers
ability: Swift Swim / Battle Armor
nature: Impish
evs: 252 HP / 68 Atk / 184 Def

[SET COMMENTS]

Although a support set may seem odd for a Pokemon with such excellent offenses, Kabutops has all the tools needed to successfully pull it off. While its Rock / Water typing leaves it susceptible to Grass-, Fighting-, and Ground-type attacks, Kabutops does have useful resistances to Fire-, Ice-, and Flying-type moves. The 4x Fire-type resistance is especially helpful when dealing with Arcanine and Victini, two prominent physical threats in UU. Kabutops also provides further team support by spinning away hazards or setting up Stealth Rock, and has some key advantages over other users of this combo, such as Claydol and Donphan; the former has practically no offensive presence and thus becomes easy set-up fodder for spinblockers such as Mismagius. The latter, Donphan, also lacks a reliable way to deal with spinblockers; Mismagius is not hit by Earthquake due to Levitate, so Donphan must resort to the inaccurate Head Smash or relatively weak Assurance. However, Kabutops can hammer Mismagius on the switch with Waterfall and KO it with Aqua Jet, taking advantage of its poor Defense and also outspeeding its Substitutes or attacks. It must be mentioned though that Kabutops will rarely be able to run both Waterfall and Aqua Jet on this set, as it badly needs the additional coverage offered by Stone Edge or Rock Slide. Water-type STAB is also helpful for hitting Golurk, whose partial Ground typing ensures that it won't enjoy the super effective move. Stone Edge is another offensive option for Kabutops, eliminating the Flying- and Ice-types that may get in the way, but its accuracy may prove disappointing; Rock Slide is a viable alternative, though the power drop is significant.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Since this is a defensive variant of Kabutops, sandstorm support is immensely helpful to boost its below average Special Defense. Hippowdon thus makes a great partner; its good Defense stat helps it take physical Fighting-type moves directed at Kabutops, and it also has a nice immunity to Electric-type attacks. However, because they share a Grass-type weakness, Pokemon such as Roserade are good partners. Roserade also provides Spikes support, which complements Kabutops's Stealth Rock nicely. Offensive versions of Shaymin are also good partners, as they will appreciate hazard support and resist Grass-type moves. Since Hitmontop spins away Stealth Rock and threatens Kabutops with STAB Fighting-type moves, offensive Psychic-types such as Azelf and Alakazam are good partners. They must watch out for Sucker Punch, however.

The EV spread is rather specialized: 68 Attack EVs ensure that Kabutops OHKOes Victini (and, by extension, non-Intimidate Arcanine) with Stone Edge after Stealth Rock damage, while the defensive investment allows it to comfortably survive both a Life Orb Fusion Bolt and a Life Orb Close Combat from Victini and Arcanine, respectively. This makes Kabutops a great check to these Fire-types, as it resists their primary STAB move and will not fall easily to their coverage moves. Speed EVs are certainly viable, but hardly any Pokemon that outspeed Kabutops threaten it, and such a change would take away from Kabutops's bulk. The ability is a toss-up, but also a relatively unimportant issue. Swift Swim takes advantage of opposing Rain Dance teams, while Battle Armor is useful to prevent critical hits, but such an ability is not particularly useful on Kabutops, which can neither boost its defenses nor recover HP.

[Other Options]

Aqua Tail is an option over Waterfall for extra power at the cost of accuracy, but attains no significant KOs regardless of whether Kabutops has obtained a Swords Dance or not. X-Scissor is an option to hit Grass-types harder, but most have an additional Poison typing and therefore take more from Stone Edge. Kabutops should be switching out of Grass-type Pokemon anyway. Superpower is a very powerful move that gives Kabutops excellent coverage, but the Attack and Defense drops are unappealing, especially given Kabutops's decent Defense. Low Kick too is really only useful to hit Bisharp, Empoleon, and Ferroseed harder. Return can hit Quagsire for neutral damage and retains general coverage, but Stone Edge is generally better since it hits most other threats harder. Knock Off has only situational usage in removing Eviolite; it is generally better to just hammer away at such Pokemon. Hone Claws could boost the accuracy of Aqua Tail and Stone Edge, but Swords Dance Waterfall will outdamage both. Battle Armor is an interesting ability, but without any way to boost defenses or reliable recovery, the insurance against critical hits is unneeded.

[Checks and Counters]

Water Absorb Quagsire, Empoleon, Ferroseed, and Poliwrath resist or are immune to Kabutops's STAB moves. Quagsire ignores Swords Dance boosts if it has Unaware, and physically defensive variants shake off Waterfall with ease. It can also threaten Kabutops with a burn from Scald or attack it with a super effective Earthquake. Empoleon with Hidden Power Grass or Grass Knot decimate Kabutops, but must watch out for Low Kick or Superpower. Poliwrath, while uncommon, walls Kabutops cold while threatening a KO with STAB Fighting-type moves. Bulky Water-types such as Milotic, Slowbro, and Suicune wall Kabutops as well, shaking off Stone Edge and either phazing or potentially burning with Scald. Repeated Stone Edges from a boosted Kabutops will hurt, though. Bulky Grass-types are especially troublesome; defensive Shaymin takes little from Stone Edge and OHKOes easily with its STAB attacks. Fighting-types such as Hitmontop are bulky enough to sponge Waterfall and can KO with Close Combat or another STAB move. While bulky Ground-types such as Donphan and Hippowdon can take a Waterfall or two and retaliate with Earthquake, they are unable to continually tank Kabutops's Water-type assaults, particularly in the rain. Since Kabutops is rather slow outside of rain, it is very prone to being revenge killed. Jolteon and Raikou outspeed Kabutops by a large margin and maim the shellfish with their Electric-type moves, while also having the ability to scout with Volt Switch.

Right. I'm looking at the defensive set, and the EVs are odd. I think 252 HP / 68 Atk / 164 Def Impish is better. First of all, it still ensures Stone Edge OHKOs physically attacking Victini and Arcanine (non-Intimidate) after Stealth Rock. Before, you couldn't OHKO without SR anyway, so the extra damage is wasted IMO.

Secondly, the defense lets Kabutops survive LO Fusion Bolt from Victini (59.25 - 69.75%) and LO CC from Arcanine (75.3 - 88.88%, can no longer be OHKO'd), two Pokemon that Kabutops checks.

Unless I'm missing something huge, I think that above spread should be the new one.

Also, here are some looks at Aqua Tail vs Waterfall at +2 (hooray for honkalculator!)

Sawsbuck (Swords Dance) Aqua Tail 85.43 - 100.33% Waterfall 75.82 - 89.4%
Spiritomb (Calm Mind) Aqua Tail 86.18 - 101.64% Waterfall 76.97 - 90.78%
Victreebel (Mixed Sun Sweeper) Aqua Tail 90.69 - 106.64% Waterfall 80.73 - 95.01%
Snorlax (Curse) Aqua Tail 92.91 - 109.44% Waterfall 82.67 - 97.44%
Hitmontop (Rapid Spin) Aqua Tail 94.73 - 111.51% Waterfall 83.88 - 99.01%
Cobalion (Calm Mind) Aqua Tail 95.67 - 112.96% Waterfall 85.18 - 100.3%
Zapdos (Baton Pass) Aqua Tail 98.17 - 115.92% Waterfall 87.2 - 102.87%
Sigilyph (Cosmic Power) Aqua Tail 105.45 - 124.42% Waterfall 94.25 - 111.2%

kk this is good for GPs, but I will be slowly proofreading this slowly over the next few days so holding off may yield fruit

This seems to have been neglected, so have an amateur GP check!

This set focuses around using rain support to double Kabutops's Speed, allowing it to sweep when commanding the power of Swords Dance. Aqua Jet finds itself in the last slot for a variety of reasons. If rain is down but Kabutops has a Swords Dance boost, it can mitigate Kabutops's the low Speed of the shellfish and still let it attempt a late-game sweep. The priority move is also a good insurance against revenge killing, hitting opponents hard before they can attack. Be sure to remember the power difference between this move and Waterfall, however, as the thought of a priority move can cause a hair-trigger response to use it in a non-optimal situation.

The EVs provide the most amount of speed possible, as chances are there will be instances when you need Kabutops outside of rain. If you don't intend to provide rain support, an EV spread of 72 HP / 252 Atk / 184 Spe with Breakable Armor is certainly viable, as Breakable Armor raises speed by one stage and lowers defense by one stage when hit by a physical move. Kabutops will be able to outspeed notable threats such as Celebi and Mew and KO them if they are weakened. Such an approach is less favorable, however, as the ability requires Kabutops to be hit before it activates.

Pokemon that set up Rain Dance are the primary teammates for Kabutops, as the rain gives it power and speed.
Gastrodon is perhaps the best counter to Kabutops, as it is immune to Water-type attacks, resists Rock-type attacks, and can retaliate with an Earth Power. Unaware Quagsire is in a similar boat; a physically defensive version will laugh at Stone Edge and Waterfall. Because of these Pokemon, Roserade is a good partner.
Although a support set may seem odd for an offensive Pokemon, Kabutops has all the tools needed to pull it one off. While its Rock / Water typing leaves it susceptible to the leaves, it does grant Kabutops resistances to Fire-, Ice-, and Flying-type moves. The 4x Fire-type resistance is especially helpful when dealing with Arcanine and Victini, two powerhouses in UU. However, Kabutops can hammer Mismagius's low Defense with Aqua Jet, outspeeding its Substitutes and or attacks. This Water-type move is also helpful for hitting Golurk, whose partial Ground typing won't enjoy the super effective move. Stone Edge is in another offensive option for Kabutops, eliminating the Fire-, Flying-, and Ice-types that it walls with a more powerful attack.

[Additional Comments]

Since this is a defensive variant of Kabutops, sandstorm is immensely helpful to boost its below average Special Defense and allow it to tank all sorts of hits. Thus, Hippopotas is a great partner. Its good defense stat helps it take physical Fighting-type moves that are directed at Kabutops, and it has a nice immunity to Electric-type attacks that its partner the shellfish fossil will enjoy. However, because they share a Grass-type weakness, Pokemon such as Roserade are good partners. Roserade also provides Spikes support if you so desire, which complements Kabutops's Stealth Rock support nicely. Offensive versions of Celebi are also good partners, as they will appreciate hazard support, and also resists the deadly Grass-type moves. Since Hitmontop spins away Stealth Rock and threatens Kabutops with STAB Fighting-type moves, offensive Psychic-types such as Azelf and Alakazam can be considered are good partners. They must watch out for Sucker Punch, however.

The EV spread is rather specialized, but it ensures Kabutops OHKOes Victini (and, by extention, non-Intimidate Arcanine) with Stone Edge after Stealth Rock damage. The defense will allow it to survive both a Life Orb Fusion Bolt and a Life Orb Close Combat from Victini and Arcanine, respectively, with HP to spare. The ability is really left up to the trainer. Swift Swim potentially takes advantage of opposing Rain Dance teams. Battle Armor is useful to prevent critical hits, but such an ability is less useful on Kabutops, who which doesn't boost its defenses or recover HP.

[Other Options]

Aqua Tail is an option over Waterfall for extra power at the cost of accuracy, but the KOs Aqua Tail gets unboosted and at +2 are rather insignificant. (Not sure what you're trying to say here) X-Scissor is an option to hit Grass-types harder, but most are Grass-/Poison-types and would they take more damage from Stone Edge. Kabutops should be switching out of Grass-type Pokemon anyway, in fear of being KOed. Superpower is a very powerful move that is good for coverage, but the Attack and Defense drop are unappealing, especially since Kabutops has decent Defense and doesn't want to be jeopardizing that. Low Kick provides additional super effective coverage, but is really only useful to hit Bisharp harder. Knock Off has only situational usage in removing Eviolite; it is generally better to just hammer away at such Pokemon. Hone Claws could boost the accuracy of Aqua Tail, but Swords Dance Waterfall will still outdamage. Battle Armor is an interesting ability, but without any way to boost defenses or reliable recovery, the insurance against critical hits is unneeded. (You've already mentioned Battle Armour above)

[Checks and Counters]

Water Absorb Quagsire, Gastrodon, and Poliwrath resist or are immune to Kabutops's Water- and Rock-type STAB moves. Quagsire ignores any Swords Dance boosts if it has Unaware, and physically defensive variants shake off Waterfall with ease. It can also threaten Kabutops with a burn from Scald or attack it with a super effective Earthquake. Gastrodon can KO Kabutops with Earth Power, especially if it the sea slug gets a Storm Drain boost. Poliwrath, while uncommon, threatens the Kabutops shellfish with STAB Fighting-type moves. Most bulky Water-types such as Milotic, Slowbro, and Suicune wall Kabutops, shaking off Stone Edge bar a critical hit, and either phazing or potentially burning with Scald. Bulky Grass-types are especially troublesome; defensive Shaymin and Celebi take little from Stone Edge and KO with their Grass-type moves. Some Fighting-types such as Hitmontop are bulky enough to take a bathe in Waterfall and KO with Close Combat or another move. While certain Ground-types such as Donphan can take a Waterfall or two and retaliate KO with Earthquake, they are unable to continually tank Kabutops's Water-type moves. Since Kabutops is rather slow outside of rain, it is very prone to revenge killing. Jolteon and Raikou outspeed by a large margin and maim it the shellfish with their Electric-type moves, and can scout with Volt Switch. Offensive Celebi variants outspeed as well, and can set up Swords Dance or Nasty Plot on a predicted switch.

Whew that was pretty long. Hopefully I haven't missed anything or made ay mistakes myself!

thanks! I left some of the changes out since I think the original way conveys contrast, etc. better. Keep up the good work though!

edit: it's mainly so i don't say Kabutops Kabutops Kabutops over and over

shellfish? Guys what is this, Blastoise? Horseshoe Crab (trilobite?), please.

turning it into a fearsome sweeper when its Rock- and Water-type dual-STAB (add an s to pluralize?) are taken into account.

this typing leaves it weak to the ever common Ground- and Fighting-type moves (this part seems a bit awkward; "to ever common types like Ground- and Fighting-"?), and 4x weakness to Grass-type moves.

That's all I could find from a cursory glance. You may want to give Return a quick mention in OO or AC of the sweeper set; it gives Kabutops perfect coverage.

well, flavor says shellfish, but eh.

on most other analyses, I've seen dual-STAB without the "s," so I've stuck with that

good point, I'll change that

what does Return hit that Stone Edge doesn't though? the better accuracy of Return makes it almost worth mentioning though, idk

How does Return give perfect coverage at all? It's useless against the same things that Stone Edge doesn't hit, but you lose a whole lot of power against Flying-types. Return doesn't even deserve a mention anywhere in the analysis.

Looking at it a bit more, you seem to be right. It doesn't gain a huge amount in the way of coverage bar against Gastrodon and the rare Poliwrath. Yeah just mention it in OO as a way to dispose of Gastrodon and still keep nice coverage. EDIT: yeah if it's going to be OU then ignore it

and Berserker Lord, Water / Normal gives very close to perfect coverage; the only things it doesn't hit neutrally (discounting prevos) include ferrothorn, jellicent, shedinja, and empoleon. The first three are irrelevant and the last one is not one you want to fuck with either way unless you have superpower/low kick.

oh and add Empoleon to checks and counters and mention that low kick/superpower also hit it harder?

EDIT2: oh and also ferroseed

Well, I'm sure that Gastrodon is going to be thrown in OU from what the stats look like, so Poliwrath is the only target, and I doubt that would be enough to justfiy it for a mention.

If you don't intend to provide rain support, an EV spread of 72 HP / 252 Atk / 184 Spe with Breakable Armor is also certainly viable, as Breakable Armor raises speed by one stage and lowers defense by one stage when hit by a physical move. This would allow Kabutops will be able to outspeed notable threats such as Celebi and Mew, and KOing them if they are weakened. Such an approach is less favorable, however, as the ability requires Kabutops to be hit before it activates.

Pokemon that set up Rain Dance are the primary teammates for Kabutops, as the rain give it increases its power and speed. Accelgor is a great partner in this regard, as it has an extremely fast Rain Dance and resists Grass-, Fighting-, and Ground-type moves that Kabutops is weak to. Furthermore, the ninja bug can use U-turn to gain momentum for Kabutops to take advantage of. Amoonguss is another great partner, as it 4x resists Grass-type moves and has its Fire-type weakness covered by the shellfish. It is also bulky enough to set up Rain Dance multiple times, benefits from the rain, and has Spore to do one of two things: sleep the opponent and set up Rain Dance safely, or summon the storms first, sleep the opponent, and allow Kabutops a free switch in. Offensively, Kingdra is a good partner. The dragon can smash holes in the opponent's team with its dual STAB and clear the way for Kabutops to sweep. Ludicolo gets a mention, as it provides Sspecial Aattacks to balance Kabutops's physical attacks.

Gastrodon is perhaps the best counter to Kabutops, as it is immune to Water-type attacks, resists Rock-type attacks, and can retaliate with an Earth Power. Unaware Quagsire is in a similar boat; a physically defensive version will laugh at Stone Edge and Waterfall Because of these Pokemon, Roserade is a good partner to deal with these threats. It can set up Spikes to ease aid in Kabutops's KOs and eliminate both of the Ground- / Water-type Pokemon with its STAB Grass-type attacks. It also has decent synergy with Kabutops, 4x resisting the Grass-type moves directed at the shellfishKabutops. That said, oOpposing Grass-types, especially bulky ones such as Celebi and Shaymin, can also cause problems are troubling .They can easily tank Stone Edge and set up on or force Kabutops out. If you aren't using Rain support, strong Fire-types such as Arcanine and Rotom-H are good for taking these out. Otherwise, strong Ice-types such as Mamoswine and Weavile are favored. These partners (bar Rotom-H) will leave you walled by most bulky Water-types, so Electric-types such as Jolteon and Raikou are useful partners. The ability to scout with Volt Switch is especially helpful, as it seizes the momentum and augments Kabutops's offensive pressure.

[Set Comments]

Although a support set may seem odd for an offensive Pokemon, Kabutops has all the tools needed to pull one off. It provides further team support by spinning away hazards and or setting up Stealth Rock., and It also has some key advantages over other users of this combo such as Claydol and Donphan. The former has practically no offensive presence, and becomes easy set-up fodder for spin blockers such as Mismagius. Donphan also lacks a reliable way to deal with such spin blockers; Mismagius is not hit by Earthquake due to levitate, so Donphan must use the inaccurate Stone Edge. However, Kabutops can hammer Mismagius's low Defense with Aqua Jet, outspeeding its Substitutes or attacks. This Water-type move is also helpful for hitting Golurk, whose partial Ground typing won't enjoy the super effective move. Stone Edge is another offensive option for Kabutops, eliminating the Fire-, Flying-, and Ice-types that it walls with a more powerful attack.

[Additional Comments]

Since this is a defensive variant of Kabutops, sandstorm is immensely helpful to boost its below average Special Defense and allow it to tank all sorts of hits. Thus, Hippopotas is a great partner. Its good defense stat helps it take physical Fighting-type moves that are directed at Kabutops, and it has a nice immunity to Electric-type attacks that its partner will enjoy. However, because they share a Grass-type weakness, Pokemon such as Roserade are recommendedgood partners. Roserade can also provides Spikes support if you so desire, which complements Kabutops's Stealth Rock nicely. Offensive versions of Celebi are also good partners, as they will appreciate hazard support and resists the deadly Grass-type moves. Since Hitmontop spins away Stealth Rock and threatens Kabutops with STAB Fighting-type moves, offensive Psychic-types such as Azelf and Alakazam are good partners. They must watch out for Sucker Punch, however.

The ability is really left up to the trainer. Swift Swim potentially takes advantage of opposing Rain Dance teams. Battle Armor is useful to prevent critical hits, but such an ability is less useful on Kabutops, which since it doesn't boost its defenses or recover HP.

[Other Options]

Aqua Tail is an option over Waterfall for extra power at the cost of accuracy, but the KOs Aqua Tail gets unboosted and at +2 are rather insignificant. X-Scissor is an option to hit Grass-types harder, but most are Grass- / Poison-types and they take more from Stone Edge. Kabutops should be switching out of Grass-type Pokemon anyway. Superpower is a very powerful move that is good for coverage, but the Attack and Defense drops are unappealing, especially since Kabutops has decent Defense and doesn't want to be jeopardizing that. Low Kick provides additional super effective coverage, but is really only useful to hit Bisharp harder. Return can provide reliable neutral coverage if Stone Edge's sketchy accuracy is unappealing, but Stone Edge is generally better for more power. Knock Off has only situational usage in removing Eviolite; it is generally better to just hammer away at such Pokemon. Hone Claws could boost the accuracy of Aqua Tail, but Swords Dance Waterfall will outdamage. Battle Armor is an interesting ability, but without any way to boost defenses or reliable recovery, the insurance against critical hits is unneeded.

[Checks and Counters]

Water Absorb Quagsire, Gastrodon, and Poliwrath resist or are immune to Kabutops's STAB moves. Quagsire ignores any Swords Dance boosts if it has Unaware, and physically defensive variants shake off Waterfall with ease. It can also threaten Kabutops with a burn from Scald or attack it with a super effective Earthquake. Gastrodon can KO Kabutops with Earth Power, especially if the sea slug gets a Storm Drain boost. Poliwrath, while uncommon, threatens the shellfish with STAB Fighting-type moves. Most bulky Water-types such as Milotic, Slowbro, and Suicune wall Kabutops, shaking off Stone Edge bar a critical hit and either phazing or potentially burning with Scald. Bulky Grass-types are especially troublesome; defensive Shaymin and Celebi take little from Stone Edge and KO with their Grass-type moves. Some Fighting-types such as Hitmontop are bulky enough to bathe in Waterfall and KO with Close Combat or another move. While certain Ground-type such as Donphan can take a Waterfall or two and retaliate with Earthquake, they are unable to continually tank Kabutops's Water-type moves. Since Kabutops is rather slow outside of rain, it is very prone to revenge killing. Jolteon and Raikou outspeed by a large margin and maim the shellfish with their Electric-type moves, and can scout with Volt Switch. Offensive Celebi variants outspeed as well, and can set up Swords Dance or Nasty Plot on a predicted switch.

I know it's not really my job, but some of the counters aren't very good counters. I'm just gonna leave some calcs here. All of these assume +2 Adamant Life Orb in the rain:

Stone Edge vs 4/0 Celebi: 0.5HKO
Stone Edge vs 252/0 Celebi: 105.4% - 124.3%
Stone Edge vs 232/252+ Celebi: 76.7% - 90.5%
So Celebi only wins, without any hazards, with the Calm Mind set, which is like its sixth set.

Shaymin has the same stats as Celebi and is also neutral to Stone Edge, so he's exactly the same. But he's even worse since there's no physically defensive spread for him. Shaymin will always lose.

Donphan can certainly not take 1 or 2 waterfalls. Even a fully physically defensive spread takes 169.3% - 200% from Waterfall in the rain. I guess he could with Sturdy but I think we know that doesn't really count!

Waterfall vs Unaware Quagsire 252/252+: 51.8% - 61.4%
A clean 2HKO, while Quag does 62.6% - 74% with an uninvested Earthquake. So Quagsire loses too. Water Absorb is a different story.

Waterfall vs 252/252+ Hitmontop: 93.8% - 110.5% (note this is +1 because of Intimidate!!!)

Stone Edge vs 252/252+ Slowbro: 54.8% - 64.7%. Again a clean 2HKO. Slowbro's strongest option in return is to Psychic, which without investment does 49.6% - 58.8%. So the only way he can win is by hoping for a burn with Scald.

This is pretty much the same with the other bulky waters. Scald is the only way they can win, so Kabutops actually has a great chance.

The only actual counters are Calm Mind Celebi, Ferroseed, Empoleon, and Gastrodon, unless I'm forgetting something.

Mostly I'd just recommend making Kabutops sound a lot more threatening than you have done. He's got some serious power in the rain after Swords Dance. He was one of the reasons for DrizzleSwim to be banned afterall.

Or you can just ignore me I don't really mind.

Also shellfish is fine IMO since he is officially the Shellfish Pokemon (his species in the Pokedex)

Thanks, for the check, I'll implement it when I get home.

You make good points, and have calcs to back it up!! However, these are in the rain, which isn't as reliable in UU since you actually have to Rain Dance and it only lasts 8 turns. Also, Kabutops needs to get to +2 (which I'll admit isn't that hard to get, actually) For example, Celebi would normally outspeed and KO, etc. What I'll do is add a section in the rain sweeper explaining how threatening Kabutops is if rain is up, and change some of the stuff (like with bulky waters and Donphan). Since I ultimately want others to understand how to use Kabutops outside of rain, I'll still keep most of what I had before. Thanks for you input! c:

It provides further team support by spinning away hazards or setting up Stealth Rock, and has some key advantages over other users of this combo such as Claydol and Donphan.

Bit skeptical of this part. Claydol does have close to zero offensive presence, but Donphan has Head Smash (screw the recoil if it KOes a Ghost) and Odor Sleuth. Head Smash is the first slash in the B/W analysis and I'm honestly surprised it didn't show up in the 4th gen analysis, too. Kabutops's unboosted Aqua Jet does not deal a lot to Mismagius, and Mismagius can hit Kabutops's weaker defensive side with HP Fighting, so Mismagius still wins.

I think the real benefit about using Kabutops as a spinner is that it is unorthodox. It is, like you said, usually an offensive Pokemon. Rapid Spin isn't expected, and even if you know Kabutops has it, STAB Stone Edge is a painful for most ghosts. You could mention that instead.

Head Smash Donphan totally went over my head; it is odd that it wasn't around earlier. The main thing I'm focusing on is reliability, as not having to use low accuracy, low PP moves means it is much harder to stall out. I think I meant hitting with Waterfall on the switch and then using Aqua Jet or something.

But you do have a good point with unorthodox spinning, so I'll mention that. And also add the unofficial check and stuff.

[Overview]

Kabutops returns to UU as a solid Pokemon, its with decent Attack and Defense sitting comfortably within stats relative to the rest of the tier. Access to Swords Dance only increases its value, turning it into a fearsome sweeper with a dangerous dual Rock- and Water-type dual-STABs. Alternatively, it can take on a more support oriented role, using Stealth Rock and Rapid Spin to help the its team. Its Rock / Water typing is a mixed blessing here: on one hand, a 4x resistance to Fire-type moves, namely particularly V-create and Flare Blitz, makes it a great check to Victini and Arcanine. However, this typing leaves it weak to ever common attacking types such as Ground- and Fighting-, and 4x cripplingly weak to Grass-type moves. Its below par Special Defense doesn't help it either. Negatives aside, Kabutops makes a great choice if one is looking for an offensive force or an attacking oriented support Pokemon that also packs an attacking punch, look no further than Kabutops.

This set focuses around on using rain support and the boosting move Swords Dance to double Kabutops' Speed and Attack stats, allowing it to sweep when commanding the power of Swords Dance. This boosting move, when combined with its great dual-STAB coverage, allows Kabutops to easily tear apart unprepared teams with its great dual STAB. Waterfall is the most reliable Water-type move in its arsenal, hitting the majority of Pokemon hard after the Swords Dance and rain boosts. Stone Edge allows Kabutops to hit opposing Water-, Grass-, and Dragon-types that resist Waterfall for neutral damage. This combo is enough to dent anything except Ferroseed and Gastrodon Quagsire, both of which tank Water- and Rock-type moves the Water / Rock offensive combination with ease. Aqua Jet finds itself earns a place in the last slot for a variety of reasons: if rain is down but Kabutops has a Swords Dance boost, it this can mitigate its low Speed and still let it attempt a late-game sweep. The priority move is also a good insurance against revenge killing, hitting opponents hard before they can attack. Be sure to remember the power difference between this move and Waterfall, however, and resist the urge to use it in situations where the shellfish comfortably outspeeds the its opponent.

[Additional Comments]

The EVs provide the most amount of maximum Speed possible, as chances are there will be instances when you may occasionally need Kabutops outside of rain. Its base 80 Speed is not horrible usable, allowing it to tying with other base 80s such as Mamoswine. 252 Attack EVs ensure Kabutops will hit as hard as possible, both before and after a Swords Dance boost. The choice of a Jolly or Adamant nature is clear with rain support: Adamant for maximum power. However, Jolly is viable if you want extra insurance outside of rain, outpacing Adamant Heracross and standard Arcanine. If you don't intend to provide Kabutops with rain support, an EV spread of 72 HP / 252 Atk / 184 Spe with Breakable Weak Armor is certainly viable, as Breakable Armor raises speed by one stage and lowers defense by one stage when after being hit by a physical move, Kabutops will be able to outspeed notable threats such as Celebi Flygon? Zapdos? and Mew and KO them if they are weakened (some prior damage may be required). Such an approach is less favorable, however, as the ability requires Kabutops to be hit before it activates both because it is situational, and due to Kabutops' frailty.

Pokemon that set up Rain Dance are the primary teammates for Kabutops, as the rain increases boosts both its power and Speed. Accelgor is a great partner in this regard, as it has an extremely fast Rain Dance and resists the Grass-, Fighting-, and Ground-type moves that Kabutops is weak to. Offensively, Kingdra is a good partner. The dragon can smash holes in the opponent's team with its own powerful dual STAB and clear the way for Kabutops to sweep. Ludicolo gets a mention too, as it provides special attacks to balance Kabutops's physical attacks. To get an idea of how fearsome Kabutops is in the rain, take the following descriptions into account: Grass-types such as Celebi Roserade and Shaymin, which originally outspeed and KO Kabutops, are swiftly KOed with by a +2 Adamant Life Orb Stone Edge. Unaware Quagsire with a fully defensive spread is KOed by +2 Adamant Life Orb rain-boosted Waterfall as well, and cannot defeat Kabutops fast enough damage it significantly, even with Earthquake. Hitmontop takes 93.8% - 110.5% from a +1 (after Intimidate) Life Orb Adamant Life Orb (consistency) Waterfall, and is hardly strong enough to KO with Mach Punch alone.

Gastrodon is perhaps the best counter to Kabutops, as it is immune to Water-type attacks, resists Rock-type attacks, and can retaliate with an Earth Power. Unaware Quagsire is in a similar boat one of the best counters to Kabutops; a physically defensive version will laugh at Stone Edge and Waterfall. Because of these Pokemon, Roserade is therefore a good partner, as it can set up Spikes to ease Kabutops's KOs and eliminate both of the Ground- / Water-type Pokemon Quagsire with its STAB Grass-type attacks. It also has decent synergy with Kabutops, 4x resisting the Grass-type moves directed at the shellfish. Hitmontop takes 93.8% - 110.5% from a +1 (after Intimidate) Adamant Life Orb Waterfall, and is hardly strong enough to KO with Mach Punch alone.

Unaware Quagsire and Water Absorb variants (as long as ifKabutops doesn't have a boost already) are some of the best counters to Kabutops as long as there is no rain; physically defensive versions will laugh at Stone Edge and Waterfall. Roserade is therefore a good partner, as it can set up Spikes to ease Kabutops's KOs and eliminate Quagsire with its STAB Grass-type attacks. It also has decent synergy with Kabutops, 4x resisting the Grass-type moves directed at the shellfish. That said, opposing Grass-types, especially bulky ones such as Shaymin and Ferroseed?, are troubling. They take little damage from either of Kabutops's STABs, and set up on or force Kabutops out. If you aren't using rain support, strong Fire-types such as Arcanine and Rotom-H are good for taking these out. Otherwise, strong Ice-types such as Mamoswine and Weavile and Flying-types such as Tornadus are better choices. These partners (bar Rotom-H) will in turn leave you walled by most bulky Water-types, so Electric-types such as Jolteon and Raikou are useful partners teammates as well. The ability to scout with Volt Switch is especially helpful, as it seizes the momentum and augments Kabutops's offensive pressure.

[Set Comments]

Although a support set may seem odd for a Pokemon with Kabutops' such excellent offenses, Kabutops has all the tools needed to successfully pull it off. While its Rock / Water typing leaves it susceptible to Grass-, Fighting-, and Ground-type attacks, it does grant Kabutops does have useful resistances to Fire-, Ice-, and Flying-type moves. The 4x Fire-type resistance is especially helpful when dealing with Arcanine and Victini, two UU powerhouses prominent physical threats in UU. It Kabutops also provides further team support by spinning away hazards or setting up Stealth Rock, and has some key advantages over other users of this combo, such as Claydol and Donphan; the former has practically no offensive presence, and thus becomes easy set-up fodder for spin(remove space)blockers spinblockers such as Mismagius. The latter, Donphan, also lacks a reliable way to deal with spin(remove space)blockers spinblockers; Mismagius is not hit by Earthquake due to Levitate, so Donphan must resort to the inaccurate Stone Edge or the rare Head Smash. However, Kabutops can hammer Mismagius's low Defense on the switch with Waterfall and KO it with Aqua Jet, taking advantage of its poor Defense and also outspeeding its Substitutes or attacks. Stone Edge is another offensive option for Kabutops, eliminating the Fire-, Flying-, and Ice-types that attempt to may get in the way, but its accuracy may prove disappointing; Rock Slide is a viable alternative, though the power drop is significant.

[Additional Comments]

Since this is a defensive variant of Kabutops, sandstorm support is immensely helpful to boost its below average Special Defense. Thus, Hippowdon is a great partner. Its Hippowdon thus makes a great partner; its good Defense stat helps it take physical Fighting-type moves directed at Kabutops, and it contributes to the partnership also has a nice immunity to Electric-type attacks. However, because they share a Grass-type weakness, Pokemon such as Roserade are good partners. Roserade also provides Spikes support, which complements Kabutops's Stealth Rock nicely. Offensive versions of Shaymin are also good partners, as they will appreciate hazard support and resist the deadly Grass-type moves. Since Hitmontop spins away Stealth Rock and threatens Kabutops with STAB Fighting-type moves, offensive Psychic-types such as Azelf and Alakazam are good partners. They must watch out for Sucker Punch, however.

The EV spread is rather specialized: it ensures 68 Attack EVs ensure that Kabutops OHKOes Victini (and, by extension, non-Intimidate Arcanine) with Stone Edge after Stealth Rock damage, while the defensive investment allows it to comfortably survive both a Life Orb Fusion Bolt and a Life Orb Close Combat from Victini and Arcanine, respectively, with HP to spare. Swift Swim potentially takes advantage of opposing Rain Dance teams, while Battle Armor is useful to prevent critical hits, but such an ability is not particularly useful on Kabutops, which can neither boost its defenses nor recover HP.

[Other Options]

Aqua Tail is an option over Waterfall for extra power at the cost of accuracy, but attains no significant KOs both unboosted and at +2 regardless of whether Kabutops has obtained a Swords Dance or not. X-Scissor is an option to hit Grass-types harder, but most are Grass- / Poison-types have an additional Poison typing and therefore take more from Stone Edge. Kabutops should be switching out of Grass-type Pokemon anyway. Superpower is a very powerful move that gains gives Kabutops excellent coverage, but the Attack and Defense drops are unappealing, especially given Kabutops's decent Defense. Low Kick too is really only useful to hit Bisharp harder. Return can hit Quagsire for neutral damage and retains general coverage, but Stone Edge is generally better since it hits most other threats harder. Knock Off has only situational usage in removing Eviolite; it is generally better to just hammer away at such Pokemon. Hone Claws could boost the accuracy of Aqua Tail and Stone Edge, but Swords Dance Waterfall will outdamage.

Poliwrath, while uncommon, walls Kabutops cold while threatening a KO the shellfish with STAB Fighting-type moves. Bulky Water-types such as Milotic, Slowbro, and Suicune wall Kabutops as well, shaking off Stone Edge and either phazing or potentially burning with Scald. Repeated Stone Edges from a boosted Kabutops will hurt, though. Bulky Grass-types are especially troublesome; defensive Shaymin takes little from Stone Edge and OHKOes easily with Grass-type moves its STAB attacks. Some Fighting-types such as Hitmontop are bulky enough to bathe in sponge Waterfall and can KO with Close Combat or another Fighting STAB move. While bulky Ground-types such as Donphan and Hippowdon can take a Waterfall or two and retaliate with Earthquake, they are unable to continually tank Kabutops's Water-type assaults, particularly in rain. Since Kabutops is rather slow outside of rain, it is very prone to being revenge killed. Jolteon and Raikou outspeed by a large margin and maim the shellfish with their Electric-type moves, and can also having the ability to scout with Volt Switch.

Mainly fixed up the prose, particularly the excessive repetition of the phrase ''this shellfish'' when referring to Kabutops; it's fine if you use it 2-3 times though.
